Happily, that isn't the case. This is a very solid, very comfortable, even premium experience. At first I was surprised at how large the unit is, probably halfway between a Game Boy Advance and the Wii U tablet. But due to the size and the dedication to comfortable curves, it's much more pleasant to hold than a 3DS, a Switch, or the like. You'd have to go back to the OG PSP to find a handheld that fits so comfortably in my medium-sized male hands.
The Sega-like D-pad disc and the face buttons are perhaps softer than many of us are used to, but I quite like them - the face buttons have a lot of travel and a satisfying enough click, making for maybe less immediate feeling than, say, a Switch, but a similar degree of tactile feedback to a Genesis controller. The shoulder buttons have no throw and are very clicky, which I like except when I accidentally press them.
There are some negatives. The screen could definitely be nicer. It's similar to the original PSP screen, but people's expectations have heightened in the last ten years. It looks really nice to me, but the view angle etc. leave something to be desired. Usually I'm looking straight on, so it's not something that bothers me. Some of the carts (particularly Atari 1 - maybe it's the first to be produced?) are too tight. There is an instructional video on Evercade's YouTube channel on how to best get the too-tight ones out, but it's not that hard. This didn't really bother me, either.
Now, onto the games.
Atari 1: I was kind of irked to have this packed in, as I've bought umpteen Atari compilations and first-party 2600 single player games are not the highlight of the 2600 library. But I was really pleasantly surprised. The 2600 games are all actually playable - helped out by the inclusion of prototype games like Aquaventure and fan games like Yars Return (not half as good as the original, but plenty good). Yes, these have been released elsewhere, but they seem more attractive on a cart with 20 games vs. a Switch app with 120. Some home ports of arcade games, notably Gravitar, are extremely impressive and at least as fun as the arcade. The 7800 games, though, are really where it's at, with the amazingly wacky Ninja Golf, the impressive motorcycle racer Motor Psycho, the odd rail shooter Alien Brigade, and the criminally unknown Food Fight.
There are downsides. The Atari arcade ports mostly don't do the original games justice. If I had been in charge, I wouldn't have put the hilariously awful Tempest prototype on this cart, but it's worth a laugh. I don't know why they included the middling 2600 Desert Falcon when the far superior 7800 version is on Atari 2, but whatever. It feels cheap to include only one Swordquest game, and not having the manual available makes it hard to succeed.
DON'T MISS: Food Fight, Ninja Golf, Motor Psycho, Yars Return, Gravitar, Aquaventure, Double Dunk.
Interplay 1: One of the smaller collections, but one of the most attractive to me. I spent a lot of time with Battle Chess, Boogerman, Earthworm Jim, and Clayfighter as a youngin', so I looked forward to playing them again. Battle Chess is agonizingly slow to me now, but it's still pretty fun if you can take a deep breath and relax. Clayfighter has not aged well, but it's still reasonably funny. Boogerman has always been a very solid platformer buried under puddles of snot, and it still is - if you can stomach the "humor", the gameplay is pretty darn good. And Earthworm Jim is a stone-cold classic after all these years.
I was very interested in the Titus games I never played before. Incantation is a gorgeous platformer with an extremely small viewport (think Bonk). It's a little fiddly, but I'm having a good time with it. Titan is an all-direction Breakout takeoff, except you can slow down time and have to shepherd the ball all over the place. It's a very interesting takeoff. I don't know how long I will enjoy it, but I've found it really rewarding so far.
DON'T MISS: Boogerman (seriously, it's solid), Earthworm Jim, Titan.
Data East 1: I am much more acquainted with Data East's arcade output than their home ports, so this has been really interesting to explore. I'm still trying out everything, but so far Magical Drop 2 has absorbed most of my time. The NES Burger Time is off from the arcade version in frustrating ways, but maybe I'll get used to it. Joe and Mac 2 is good as ever, and Side Pocket is weirdly addictive. Burnin' Rubber, aka Bump'n'Jump, is probably my favorite title here. I wouldn't have bought the system for this collection, but I'm having a lot of fun with it nonetheless.
DON'T MISS: Joe and Mac 2, Burnin' Rubber/Bump'n'Jump, Magical Drop 2, Bad Dudes, Side Pocket (no, really)
Don't stop with the pack-in cartridges, though - buy more! My personal favorite compilation so far is Piko Interactive, which is stuffed with great games and a lot of totally interesting RPGs. Other highlights are Interplay 2, Atari 2 (with Desert Falcon, Basketbrawl, and lots more), Technos, and "modern retro" mavens Mega Kat Studios. And finally, though they're no longer available on Amazon, the EU-only Namco cartridges are amazing and worth the import. I'm so excited this system exists, and I can't wait for the next wave of cartridges in the fall!
PROS:
* The build quality is surprisingly solid for the price!
* The buttons all feel good, though the D-pad is an acquired taste (it functions well, at least).
* The cartridges fit nicely (some early reviews complained of a tight fit, but this seems to have been resolved).
* Game collections are affordably priced, and come nicely packaged with plastic cases and full-color artwork!
CONS:
* The white/red/stripe design isn't going to win any awards... I'd love to see some alternatives (perhaps solid-colored shells). There was a black version in the UK, but it's hard to find now.
* The screen washes out notably when the console is held at certain angles. Oddly it's worse when held at some normal seated positions then when held upside down. It's unfortunate that it wasn't the other way around.
* The D-pad works ok, but looks and feels a little cheap.
* The volume control can be touchy, and sometimes doesn't work right away.
* The processor is on the low-end side. I'm sure that helps keep the price down, but it limits how many games will be playable. Basically, anything beyond 16-bit might be a stretch.
* Some attention-to-detail is missing... on the console packaging, the descriptions for the Data East and Interplay games are completely reversed, for example. That's a dumb, obvious oversight that makes you question what other corners were cut.
Overall, the BIGGEST issue with the Evercade has nothing to do with the console itself, but more about the games. While there are some decent, hard-to-find titles, there are equally notable gaps in the collections... nothing from Capcom, Midway, or SNK, to name a few. So, forget Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, or anything from the Neo Geo. That's a huge, huge miss for fans of retro gaming. Hopefully if/when more people pick up the Evercade, Blaze will have more leverage with copyright owners to get first-rate titles. Until then, the so-so library is fun, but of unfortunately limited appeal.

Having the games on collectable cartridges are a brilliant idea. It brings back all of those great memories of game collecting in my youth. The game cases are made with top quality heavy plastic and the mini gaming manuals are printed on high gloss heavy stock paper, with lost of bright vibrant colours. There's no instructions printed on flimsy "toilet paper" here.
If you love your classic video games and want to bring back the nostalgic feelings of game collecting once again, then the Evercade is for you. I think that you get such great value for the money with this gaming console. I can't say enough good things about it.
