One of the game's strengths is its depth and complexity, providing a rich gaming experience that unfolds over multiple playthroughs. The hidden traitor mechanic adds an extra layer of tension and suspense, keeping players on their toes as they navigate alliances and suspicions.
However, the learning curve for Unfathomable can be steep. New players may find it challenging to grasp all the rules and intricacies initially, leading to longer playtimes as everyone becomes familiar with the mechanics.
Despite this initial hurdle, the game's depth and replayability make it a rewarding choice for those willing to invest time in mastering its strategies. Once players overcome the learning curve, Unfathomable offers hours of fun and strategic gameplay.
Overall, Unfathomable earns a four-star rating for its engaging gameplay and thematic depth, with the caveat that it may require patience and multiple playthroughs to fully appreciate.
Never played BSG, but this is apparently a reskin of a much-loved game transported to their Arkham Files world. But this time we have some new faces, which is nice. I’ve got nothing against Jenny the dilettante chick and the hobo with the dog guy, but seeing them turn up in every game gets a little old.
Their miniatures are hit or miss; Mansions’ are terrible, new Descent’s are amazing. These are somewhere in between. The Deep Ones are meh but the two big monsters look great. I’ve seen this exact art of them in several other games but having them as big miniatures is a ton of fun.
Some people have complained about the hodgepodge of art styles. While it’s true that the ship illustration on the board itself has a “bad Sketchup paint over” vibe, the card art and manual design is so insanely tasty that I found the game extremely nice to look at on balance.
Be warned though, this is not Werewolf or even Dead of Winter-level gaming. There’s a good amount of stuff going on and keeping track of all the mechanics in effect and actions available to you is going to be a struggle if you’re not fairly deep into board gaming already. That said, there’s no reason you and/or your loved ones can’t learn and this would be a great place to start.
Keep up the good work, FFG!
Positives:
Themes and setting based on popular and well-known "Arkham Horror" game
Good replayability
Many different scenarios and mysteries to solve
Challenging and engaging gameplay
Suitable for both teens and adults
Negatives:
Some users may find the game to be too complex
Some users may find the game to be too luck-dependent
The game may take a long time to play
Some users may find that the game's components are not of the best quality
Overall, Unfathomable is a great strategy game for teens and adults that enjoy challenging and engaging gameplay. The game is based on the popular "Arkham Horror" game, it has good replayability, many different scenarios and mysteries to solve and it is challenging and engaging. However, some users may find the game to be too complex, too luck-dependent or taking a long time to play and some users may find that the game's components are not of the best quality. I would rate this product 4 out of 5 stars.
We ended up having two traitors from the beginning so we never had a chance, didn't even get halfway thru the game before the boat sank.
We knew who one traitor was but the second one blew our mind because my fiance played so well we didn't even know there was a second one. He got himself thrown in the brig and his captain status removed (and given to me so I looked sus). And stayed there the whole time sabotaging. The owner of the game is a cop and watching him go through an absolute existential crisis and clearly wondering about his career choice upon reveal had me immediately buying this game because it was DELIGHTFUL.
When FFG announced they're be releasing an updated version of BSG with a lovecraftian reskin it was a no brainer for me to order it.
The game arrived mint and well packaged with no visible flaw caused by shipping.
The game itself is not exactly like BSG however the changes they made are all mostly improvements, in my opinion. It's probably a medium in the difficulty of learning scale and sessions tend to last as advertised (2-4 hours). Overall it's a perfect follow-up to the BSG legacy.
