The game is pretty much you traveling from one island to another, finding treasures, fulfilling quests and unlocking train stations. As you are doing this, you befriend monsters, gather materials and fend off other treasure hunters. If you are interested in just completing the main story, it should take about 35-40 hours to complete. However, if you are completionist, it will definitely take you much longer. I am 65+ hours in and I am still trudging along.
I would say a minor gripe is the ability to collect everything. The map is not that great. The zoom function is lacking. And if you unlock all the stations, the entire map unlocks. So, you can’t tell where you haven’t been. So finding missed locked chests and balloons become like a needle in a haystack. Even with my monster’s scan ability, if you are not in the right spot or close enough range, you will never find it. And the balloons were pure luck running into them. My other gripe is that I wished that Erik/Mia were more effective in battle. My monsters were my main hitters and I was stuck with my slingshot. The battles were just right enough difficulty. The controls were fine but can get confusing when you are in a middle of battle. I have wasted many a super attack by pushing R instead of L.
The loading times were pretty good except when you are moving from one station to another. Other than that, the game ran smoothly. The graphics are good and I love the artwork. The music is pure nostalgia. I love the treasures – it is items and figures from other DQ games. It's fun reminiscing about older games. The voice acting was good and I love they were able to get the original VA for a certain scene.
I love it. I am a Dragon Quest fan and this side story was an entertaining diversion. I love collecting things, doing quests and a decent story. Would I replay this? No. But I believe this is a fun addition to the series. If you don’t like repetitive game play, then this might not be for you.
You explore the world with a group consisting of either Erik or Mia (your choice) and 3 monsters. The monsters will follow you and fight enemies with you. You can support your monsters in combat with your dagger and your sling-shot. You put together a team of monsters based on what type of treasure they are good at finding, what special abilities they have ("fortes"), and their combat abilities. There are good reasons to shuffle around the monsters in your group so you will be encouraged to explore with a variety of monsters.
When you are out exploring you can call up a compass that points toward treasures. When you get close to the treasures, your monsters will them give you a vision of where the treasure can be found. These visions are all a little different for different types of monsters - for example, a slime is a small ground based monster that will give you ground level visions that look very clear; a bird may give you a high overhead vision; a mud monster will give you a vision with mud all over it, so you can't see as clearly. When you ask for visions from the monsters you get one image for each monster. You can use these images to search for the treasure.
When you find a treasure you dig it up and your monsters will automatically carry them for you. Your monsters can only carry a set number of treasures so you will need to head back to your base to drop them off. It is possible that your monsters could drop their treasures when they are attacked in battle so you will need to pick them up again when that happens.
You will encounter a large number of different monsters and pallet swapped variations throughout the world. When you defeat the monsters in battle there is a chance that they will go to your headquarters where you can formally recruit them. You can make this recruitment virtually guaranteed for monsters you really want to recruit. I recommend checking the stats of newly recruited monsters to see what types of attacks they are weak too; make a mental note and use those weaknesses against the monsters you find in the wild.
The combat plays as an action RPG where you can run around and swing your dagger. You also get a sling-shot which ends up being the real powerhouse weapon. The slingshot can fire many different types of ammo which have different effects. There are several physical damage and magical damage shots which can be very effective if you use a type your target is weak to. There are sling-shot pellets you can fire at your own monsters to heal them, restore their MP, or give them a temporary buff. You will have to find, make, or buy pellets but will make plenty of money to carry a good supply of pellets.
There are a large amount of quests and many things you can do. You can craft pellets and cook food that acts as a temporary buff for your monsters. You can send teams of monsters out on timed expeditionary missions with better rewards for sending the right team to the right places. You will defend your vault from raids by rival treasure hunters. The rival treasure hunters will also track you down when you are exploring in an attempt to steal treasure from you. The treasure hunting mechanics make this game feel like a single player Sea of Thieves.
Overall this game is a lot of fun! I highly recommend it. This game is fun for adults but I feel it would be a good for kids as well, especially for kids that like Dragon Quest or Pokemon.
The change from turn based to action driven with a blend of DQ monsters is a perfect hybrid. The team of monsters that join you in the demo go off on their own attacking, casting spells while you combo the enemy is very fun and refreshing. The characters look cool, the story seems like its gonna be a treasure hunters dream and yeah I immediately wanted to continue playing after the demo ended. Play the demo first because you get a little bonus for purchasing the whole game. A must buy for me and maybe you too.
