The challenges are different with having to watch your food, water and health meter. I would say this is almost like sims meets fallout.
So far, it's very interesting and it really deserves a chance. This isn't NPC centered, so it is different in that aspect, but its still a fun and interesting game.
FO4 introduced base building, but I just placed a bunch of turrets at Red Rocket and was done with it. Why bother building an elaborate base to defend against random spawns when they won't appreciate the hours I spent.
So what is FO76 to me, a former WoW player and a big fan of FO4?
First of all I see it as a new and dynamic branch of the FO series, just as WoW was a spin-off of Warcraft (which I never played). Warcraft didn't die and WoW is almost 15 years old. And just as the WoW of today has changed from vanilla, I expect FO76 to evolve as they developers learn, grow and fix the things that do need fixing.
I've been playing FO76 since the stress tests and BETA sessions. I've seen the AI behaviour change during this period, so I know they are making changes behind the scene. Coming from FO4, I was used to it crashing the Xbox. So unlike FO4, when the server crashes, you don't lose all your progression. Worst case is you lose your claimed workshop. But WoW faced those same server issues even years after vanilla. (Amazon recently had a date breach, so I don't expect anybodies backend to be perfect all the time.)
Lack of Storyline? Since we are the first survivors to emerge from the vault, there are no other human characters. There are robots that provide some interaction. But most were programmed for specific tasks pre-war and we end up taking over the human aspects of those tasks. And the holotapes provide a narrative of what happened, why and where and so on.
So yes, there is no seeking clues for Valentine. But you are looking for clues. You are just doing it without Valentine constantly asking if you found the holotapes yet. Good thing too. Because I'd hate for him to be constantly spamming me while I spent time building my CAMP!
In a multi-player type game, there will always be people rushing to be first. First to reach 50, first to launch a nuke and first to kill the queen, and eventually first to get bored.
My style has been to follow the main and side quests, take over workbenches (for the building plans and Stimpack rewards, resources and XP) and also run around exploring the world (and opening up weigh points). I'm not in a rush to get anywhere. (I am level 45 as of this review). I run on the roads, and I run across mountains. I want to open as much content and find things on my own.
I see this game as a Vault-Tec experiment. We were the first vault to open, so we are the first humans. But the game developers have already said that other vaults will open. What humans will come out of those vaults? Certainly not more players.
This is where Bethesda has opportunity to address some peoples (kids?) criticisms of the lack of human NPC's. It also looks like there are other parts of the map that are not yet accessible., leaving room to add more content too. Of course they could always add a whole new pam via an expansion as well.
If you want a perfect world, don't come to FO76. It's not a perfect world. We do need survivors to help make it a better world though. And they must have what it takes to overcome any obstacle, even a server glitch or 3 during your game session. Your team won't get wiped. And you'll be placed back in a safe place. How much more care bear could a world offer?
If you've read this far, here are some pointers. Do the events as they open for your level. You get xp and useful rewards. Grab all the resources, bulk them up, keep a reserve and then sell overflow for CAPs. Follow the quest lines but don't forget to explore all the buildings and open areas in those zones before moving on to the next town.
I rerolled a character and went back to the starter quests (BETA didn't give the Xbox rewards), and by slowly making my way to the objective I found I was better equipped and having a much easier time surviving. You can still do things to maximize XP, but don't make it a game to get to level 100 as fast as you can. You'll get there. But will you have all the upgrades for your chosen weapon? Or will you have to come back a grind low level areas again?
And SPECIALs matter. Figure out what type of weapon you want to equip, then find some online advice for where to put points into it. You only have 49. So you have to chose it with some end game thought.
Also research perk cards. Some might look good or fun at low level, but they won't help you at higher levels. And you can pick a SPECIAL point from Agility BUT buy the card from Perception instead! I learned this too late for my main. I'm not too broken that the coming SPECIAL respec won't fix.
Like I said, it's a Vault-Tec/Bethesda experiment. You aren't just being experimented on, you are also the one doing the experimenting. So learn and teach others. Now go out and be good citizens, Vault Boys and Girls!
