I’ll keep this one short and sweet. I felt compelled to review this game (even three years later) because I ended up with over 200 hours in it. I’ve been a hardcore Fallout fan since 1997 when the first Isometric top-down game came out. Something about that post-apocalyptic world just grabbed me and I’ve been hooked ever since.
*What I liked*:
It’s basically more Fallout 4. It’s built using the same engine, has a lot of the same mechanics, and basically extends that experience, but with other people.
The setting of West Virginia with its rolling hills and local legends is an awesome place to explore. Like other Fallout games, this just made me want to visit the region to see some of the local sites in real life.
The building aspect was expanded from FO4 and I really enjoy that part of it. It’s especially fun to see what other people have built.
They have added a ton of new content. There’s so much to do.
*What I didn't like*:
Choosing to leave NPCs out of the game at the beginning was a huge mistake. The mystery of where everyone went was fun at first, but we really needed to eventually meet some people. They did fix that in a later patch. But I think that was just not a good choice.
There is a prolific amount of cheating in this game with item duplication. If you want to be competitive in the all-out PvP mode, you need to have one of the duplicated super (perfectly rolled) weapons. Otherwise, you just get wasted.
*The Bottom Line:*
As mentioned above, I have over 200 hours in the game so they obviously did something right. Five stars out of five for a southern-flavored Fallout that’s super fun. I would do it all over again.
Here’s what you need to know: this game is fully online. You must have xbox live. You must have a good internet connection. It says all of this on the front cover of the game. People who give this game 1 star bc they don’t know obvious things about the game are irresponsible.
You also need about 100 gb of free space on your Xbox bc the game and its updates are big.
With that said, I have played the game about 10 hours. Not once has it bugged out. I have gotten disconnected from servers, but I think that was more of a internet issue than a game issue. Bethesda is updating the game tomorrow morning (12/4), and I suspect it to be even better.
This game is not for everyone. It can feel very lonely if you don’t have friends to play with. You might be on a server with just a few other human players, and the map is massive. So far, every human interaction has been peaceful except one guy who attacked my camp. Everyone else has left me alone, and one guy even saved my life.
But if you have friends, this game is amazing! Going on adventures through the wasteland with your buddies is a blast. Killing super
mutants together is super fun! I used to have friends over and we would take turns playing fallout 4. Now we can explore together and work together. It is some of the most fun I’ve had playing a game. Some of the creatures and locations are so cool. And visually the game is beautiful.
But this game can be hard. It’s harder than fallout 4. You have hunger, thirst, diseases, guns breaking, etc. But it should be hard. It’s survival.
Based on my experience, the people complaining about this game never gave it a chance. There are quests, but not nearly to the extent of fallout 4. There are no NPCs, but who cares? The game might have glitches, but have you seen the enormity of the map? Get over yourselves and have some fun! The game is what it is: online multiplayer fallout. For some, this is a disappointment. But for people like me, it has been totally worth the money.
