Flic Hub
- Don’t buy Flic buttons without a hub, YES, they work off of having a smartphone in range, its not the best experience, just buy the hub.
- I have one hub deployed for an 1,110 sq foot (103 sq M) 4-level ski condo including garage with buttons on every floor & room and zero connectivity or responsiveness issues. The hub is located in the middle level tucked away out of sight.
- Hubs take all of 30 seconds to set up
and can be connected via wi-fi or a network cable; I have my wifi split so my IoT devices talk on 2.4ghz and the humans use 5ghz, I have never had to connect it physically to my network
- I recommend mounting the hub right next to the outlet its plugged into with some 3M Command or other removable tape. You literally set it & forget it.
Flic Buttons
- Perhaps confusing at first, a user only has to associate a Flic button to Alexa by its three functions
- Push
- Double Push
- Hold
- Once associated, Flic buttons can be assigned to practically ANY Alexa function, routine, device, group, or third party skill it already knows.
- Our house is older, not enough power outlets or light switches. A couple of Alexa enabled power strips and Flic buttons solved our light switch problem
- My elderly Dad cannot speak in such a way that Alexa understands, but they help him use all the main functions, including telling him the weather
- Lastly: Print your own Flic buttons by drawing a .9mm circle in Word and putting the labels inside
At my house we use the ⚫️ and ⚫️⚫️ to represent one push & two pushes of the button and ➖ to hold.
Glad I did, they’re a little expensive but they work great and are extremely convenient. I thought I wouldn’t have enough uses for 3 of them but now I actually want more.
Put light switches or whatever switches you want wherever you find most convenient, just set routines for them in Alexa and stick them where you want them, no permanent installation required. Works great. Occasionally there’s a bit of a delay but it’s minimal and the regular convenience far outweighs that problem.
Using them for a simple notification is easy. Useful for a call button. Only complaint is that you cannot trigger an existing alexa routine. For example if you have a routine "display lighting" that controls ten devices. You will have to create a new routine with the button and setup the behavior of all ten devices for the button. You can't just use the existing routine. Overall works as advertised. Still a bit pricey though.
Meanwhile, I had only set two up for a while and the third was sitting on a table near my laundry basket. One day I was doing laundry and as I was loading the dryer, the extra button fell on the floor. Whoops. For fun I tried adding it to the hub, and, it’s like nothing happened.
It’s stuff like that is so simple but so necessary when you are over talking to Alexa for several years. Overtime I can see myself getting more flic buttons for under tables and sticking them next to wall switches for additional functions. Music, lights, telling Alexa kitchen echo show to show the front door cam etc.
