UPDATE 1/16/19: With the recent update #5, they've added the community desired Free-for-All single player online ranked racing, no more relying on your team to decide your fate. Unfortunately and expected, there are very few people that actually race lines, it's mostly just wall slapping, pushing and shoving, can be a lot of fun and incredibly frustrating. Still a good amount of stuff to do outside online racing, the seasonal stuff every week has a way of keeping things going.
I love open world games and I love car racing, thank the coding gods for Forza Horizon. The graphics and open world's "openess" has improved with each iteration since FH1. I remember in FH1 where almost everything crashed you, on FH4 there aren't many walls outside the city that would, very destructible environment. Lots of good air time jumps, not just the ramps, little hills can launch you if you're fast enough. Just a lot of fast paced or driving Miss Daisy scenery fun, whatever you're in the mood for! Farming perks has never been so enjoyable.
Never spent much time in auctions on previous iterations, but I am killing it and having fun in this one. Flipping cars and cashing in on people who don't grab the cash with perks, must have made somewhere around $50M in it so far, but seems like everyone is catching on now ;) Using your "favorites" garage is a good way to separate your usable cars from your 500+ collectibles and just mine the wheelspins from your junk garage and remove them.
Forzathons are cool and have led to some excellent buys in the shop, always worth having some points in the bank for when the season changes, never know what's for sale next. Always fun cooperating with other gamers in these, try to have a game within the game. Joining random MP race offerings in the map has been fun and joining a group club is cool as well which all leads me to the only frustrating part of the game...
Ranked Multiplayer: bah, even if you're the best driver (I'm not) and have the best cars (I don't), you are still subject to various spots of luck and how competent and driven your teammates are, plus plenty of glitches that can add to the issues of trying to rank up. There needs to be an individual ranked MP section, at least one frustration can be eliminated. The best decision I've made is to stop playing Ranked MP and turn attention to the Auction House and Clubs, much more fun stuff.
Looking forward to the expansion content coming this month and in Spring 2019, then FH5, keep em' coming MS coders, I'm in...thanks.
Special Kudos to the person selecting "Deathwish" by Red Sun Rising, never heard of this band and I can't get enough of that song!
Now on to the game review.
I've been a fan of the Horizon series since the first game came out for the Xbox 360 and each iteration of the games just keep getting better.
First, the game looks beautiful! I am running on an Xbox One X with the quality setting and the game looks sharp and breathtaking!
The big change to game play is the changing season through all 4 seasons. Technically this is impressive to have the entire map change to reflect the 4 seasons. Winter season is really nice to have the entire map covered in white snow, and it's not just on the surface. Driving also changes and feels different in each season. For example, the car will slip more on ice during winter.
The world map is also a shared world map with about 72 players. If the player dose not want to play with others there is an option to go solo and have the world populated with Drivatars like it did in the previous Forza Horizon 3 game.
Starting the game does not thrust you into the shared open world though. There is a lengthily tutorial through all 4 seasons before the player can fully enter the shared world. I just completed it and I didn't mind and found it fun. Some on the other hand might not like the length of the tutorial, and there is no way to skip it either.
Graphically, this is one of the best looking Xbox One games and looks stunning on Xbox One X. The good thing is that Forza Horizon 4 runs well on any Xbox One console.
The sound is also stunning and clear. Engine noise of a V8 to V12 sounds amazing. The music in the radio stations also sound good, but this could be depended on each players taste in music.
The downside is mostly nit picking and takes place during installation of the game. The disc install size is around 40GB and the day one patch adds about 22GB more bring to the install size of Forza Horizon 4 to around 63GB. For those with slower internet. this 22GB day one update might take some time.
There is no micro-transactions or loot boxes in Forza Horizon 4 and I am hoping they keep micro-transactions entirely out of the game. Forza Horizon 3 also was released with out micro-transactions and was later added in the form of purchasing tokens which can be used to buy cars in games. I am hoping this will not happen in Forza Horizon 4.
The Ultimate Edition is also a good deal. It includes VIP membership, car pass and expansion pass. If you managed to get it on time it also includes 4 day early access to the game.
I haven't played online much, and I just got past the lengthy tutorial, but I am having a blast and I recommend Forza Horizon 4 to any racing fan.
