Awesome city builder on xbox one! It's rare enough to see any city builder on console but this one has some amazing features that set it apart.

First, while the game initially seems simplistic, ramp up the difficulty and it really shines. Keep your battery powered vehicles charged, your domes safe from meteor storms, your alcoholics away from your machinery and your supply chains tight or your doomed from the start.

Jam away while you do this to an incredible soundtrack. From a beautiful orchestral set to modern punk sounding tracks to bluegrass, seriously the variety and quality of the soundtrack in this game is mind blowing. You'll spend hours and won't even realize it when you're zoned out with these tunes.

Guiding quests give you a purpose as you build, research and survive mars. End game is slightly lacking as there's only so much to do/see and your colony has a maximum population but that's fairly typical of any city builder really.

Finally the devs are very active and are still producing content for the game. Some free updates have completely changed the game already but some paid dlc will be coming eventually too. We'll have to see what the roadmap holds but so far so good!

Any interest in city builders or especially if you're looking for something to sit on the couch with and veg out to on your xbox and this is for you.

I’ve been playing this game on and off for about 5 months now and I still love it. I don’t play every day, but when I go back to it, I find it relaxing and thought provoking. The game has made me think about what it would really take to colonize Mars, which is fascinating.

There were a couple of things when I first started playing that annoyed me about the game, such as domes could not be connected to each other, but that has been updated and it has made a huge difference in the play of the game as colonists can now move back and forth to the adjacent domes.

There is a learning curve and it took me four games before I really got the hang of it, but once you figure out how to control things and look at stats etc, the game play is smooth. If you like civilization games or building cities, you will like this game.

The problem with Surviving Mars is that you can never win the game. Literally. There are no victory conditions, no goals set by the game, no markers of success or failure. Whether you're doing a great job or killing off scores of colonists, the game just keeps on truckin' until it ends, and it always ends the same way: you get tired of it and quit.

That's a fairly fatal design flaw, which is a pity as just about everything else about the game is well-done. The only major gameplay issue is that the optimal way to play is to race to build the Space Elevator wonder. As soon as you've constructed that, you can order Food from Earth so cheaply that you no longer need to worry about producing it on Mars. Since producing food on a large scale is a pain in the backside, I'm personally grateful for that flaw, but I'm not sure it's what the designers intended.

The gameplay is addictive. The graphics and sound are quite suitable for a simulation game. There are a variety of issues to manage, although the job of dealing with personality quirks and employment status of all of your colonists can get daunting once you have a few hundred of them. There is the option to play the game with "mysteries" which are sci-fi stories that fit in to your campaign (although, again, solving a mystery does not give you a "win" or end the game). You can select which country/company initially funds your mission, which will give you bonuses or penalties. A number of different customization options makes the game very replayable.

But what's the point? Again, you play until you get bored and then you quit. By definition, there's no other way the game ends. While some people may be content to "set their own goals" (play until you have 1,000 colonists then quit, play until you've built all the wonders then quit), would it be so hard for the designers to allow players to actually select those as victory conditions, so that when you've reached 1,000 colonists you get a "You win; keep playing?" message as opposed to merely deciding to quit?

I had a lot of fun and very late nights with the game when I first got it, but I don't bother with it anymore. Playing a game you can't win got boring fairly quickly. If victory conditions are ever added in a future patch, I'd start playing again in a heartbeat.

This really is a wonderful city-builder, but it’s brought down by numerous bugs.

Lots of things to micro-manage, with a great balance between in-dome and out-dome resources. Nice graphics and a basic, yet bare story.

On the downside, there is no tutorial, so be prepared to restart a few times after learning the mechanics.

The real bummer is the bugginess. Lots of problems with drones hitting invisible walls, environmental rocks that can’t be removed even though they are dutifully picked at for days in end, and graphic remnants that persist forever. After a colony reaches about 500 colonists, there is frequent and severe stuttering.

If the bugs can get worked out this game has tons of potential, even if it targets a niche crowd. I’d recommend waiting for a couple more patches.

6-22-18 - The devs have worked hard and fixed many of the worst bugs. Great work, keep at it. +1 Star

Great seller, fun game. I didn't realize it was coming from the US but it didn't take much longer to get to me then if it were coming from Amazon in Canada. Very pleased with shipping.
Quite a fun game so far. I'd been looking for a city building simulation game a while back (hadn't played any since Sim City 2000 way back when) and before that of course Sim City (always a classic), and I came across Cities Skylines which I purchased shortly after it came out (first on Xbox One). Cities Skylines was more than I think I was hoping for and I'd enjoyed many hours of it. When I saw Surviving Mars in pre-release I noticed it was by Paradox as well, but didn't justify release date price for it as I'd many other games to play and get to. Finally ordered it, received 2 weeks early of the expected date and was very impressed after I realized the controls felt a great deal like Cities.
I can't compare this to other games, I can say if you liked Cities you'll probably like this game a lot, I'm really enjoying it though. I don't write pros and cons, if I enjoy it I figure the developers did something right. Try it out.
