Setup was a dream. The DS1019+ sits in my network between my router and the rest of the devices, acting as a reverse proxy for my web server (which I have on a dedicated VM on another machine, but will eventually move into the Synology for ease of use and backups). I also set up OpenVPN on it, a Synology Drive server to sync some files, set up my PC's to back up to it with another program, and configured Hyper Backup to back up the NAS to Backblaze B2. I also encrypted the shares that have personal stuff in them (as opposed to a share with movies, or videos of the dog in the park, etc.)
All of that took an hour and a half to set up after I powered the thing on for the first time. Data copying (8.1 TB) was done the following morning. I was expecting it to take a couple of days of tinkering and fiddling.
I've had it for 2 months now and it's been rock solid through Oklahoma storm season (with a UPS connected to it.)
I just added another drive to bring up the storage capacity, and that process couldn't be easier. Put in the new drive, then 3 clicks later you're expanding the pool and you get more room.
If you're not very computer savvy, get help when you set these up. Anyone can do it, but it's easy to accidentally leave yourself or your network exposed if you misconfigure it.
The closest thing I have to a caveat is that this unit was a bit loud with 3x12TB Seagate Ironwolves in it. Those are relatively noisy drives, but once I added some velcro (the fluffy part, not the hooked part) to the bays, added rubber feet, and put it on a foam pad, it's a lot more quiet now. The fans are nice and quiet; I've never heard them at all.
Best of all? Room to grow! I still have 2 more bays, and can theoretically add another 5 bay unit to it. The RAM runs around 9% utilized right now. The CPU sits around 2% on average and spikes as high as 60% during heavy write operations. It has legs for me to add SO much more to it if I want. My VM's will almost certainly move into it later this year, when their host goes offline for good.
I'd feel very comfortable running a small business off this thing.
I had a client who was struggling like crazy to get a Windows 2008 Server online. When I looked through their requirements (basically, just filesharing), I realized a NAS might meet their needs. So, (having had a bad experience with another home-level NAS) I did a lot of shopping around and comparing to make sure I didn't embarrass myself, or create a lot of maintenance headaches.
After setting theirs up, I got a huge, huge appreciation for what a difference a little bit of quality makes, so when I decided to buy one, I bought the 5-bay version of this (1019+). I haven't had any issues with the three of these I've set up, so I can't really speak to the quality of their customer service, but I can say that in actual use, while I have some minor gripes here and there, I am much more impressed with the vast array of things this can do. It is nearly as flexible as just building your own server, but the amount of headaches avoided is somewhere around the 93% mark.
That said, there would definitely be some items in here that an "average" user could have some difficulty setting up, but there's also nothing that requires a CS degree. Annnd.. there are plenty of cool things you can do if you do have a CS degree..
1) My main use is for common, shared, file storage-- of course.
2) Next, I use it as a target for backups (or, more properly, I'm using their own built-in backup software to backup my entire main system every night). The included software is not particularly sophisticated, but at the same time, I actually had to use it to recover files that my workstation corrupted in a series of crashes, so mission accomplished.
3) I use "Download Station" which is a bittorrent client that works _okay_. It lacks a lot of features that would make it much more user-friendly to interact with, but at the end of the day, you just want it to do your torrent stuff. It becomes much more useful when you download the other search engines for it-- which are easy enough to install, thanks to Synology's system for this.
4) I was stunned to discover the Virtual Machine Manager-- which lets you actually create and run virtual machines on the NAS. My NAS has only 8GB, so I'd have to share between the NAS and whatever VM I set up, but I did try a few different machines with a few different OS's. Not all of them worked properly, but I'm still kind of impressed with the feature. Of course, this makes me wish I could've gotten _more_ RAM in this thing just for this purpose. But this is the only thing that would appear to need more RAM.
5) The NAS also includes "Surveillance Station" which acts as a DVR for IP cameras. I believe it includes two licenses, so you would have to pay extra to add more cameras. The bright spot is that this works with the $20 crummy D-Link camera I bought a while ago, without having to rely on D-Link to keep supporting it (which they haven't!). I'd say the software is on-par with most IP camera/DVR/Security software I've worked with-- way more sophisticated than I need, certainly.
6) Next, I use movie server(s!!) a little bit-- VideoStation is almost like a personal Netflix, and Plex does largely the same thing, but each has its advantages, and both can run together on the same library.
7) Next, I use the music server a bit. This bit really is kind of incredible-- with all the streaming services there are, almost none of them have more than maybe 4% of what's in my music library, so being able to stream my own music when I want to, wherever I am, without having to download to my phone.. ? C'est manifique!
8) I like being able to access the device from anywhere, not just through the veritable army of apps for different functions (look through the Play Store/App Store for the Synology apps)-- this makes checking in on my clients that much easier.
9) It's allowed me to dump Google Drive and every OTHER cloud "Drive" service that isn't private or encrypted. I can still access all my stuff exactly the same way, but I don't have Silicon Valley crawling through it. However, a full, encrypted, in-the-cloud backup of the NAS is definitely in order, anyway.
Gripes:
1) Noisy. Yes, part of this is down to the HDD's I chose, but also it has no sound insulation or anything really to mitigate the noise of the drives.
2) Noisy, part 2. The fan has three different settings, but for some reason, there isn't a dynamic setting, to turn up the fan only when the temp gets too high. As a result, I've had the NAS shut down due to heat, without the fans turning up. At the highest speed, you WILL hear them. The lowest speed is almost silent. Full disclosure: the heat issue was that I had the vents for the M.2 enclosure blocked, so the cache volume was overheating.
3) If you want write caching, you need TWO SSDs. If you use only one M.2 SSD, you will only have read caching, because, for safety with the write buffer (sensible), you need to have a RAID on the cache disks also. This means you can't do read and write caching with just one M.2.
4) It lacks polish in a few areas-- or is missing features that seem like they should be obvious from certain modules (packages).
5) Not a ton of documentation for many of the features and packages.
Top reviews from other countries
As a Plex Server, this NAS does a great job. It has no issues streaming 1080p, recording TV shows or watching live TV with a Plex Pass.
Synology keeps its OS up to date with security fixes and feature updates.
The Synology Surveillance Station is great if you have generic video surveillance cameras, like Amcrest, Reolink and others. I have been using this feature for years and purchased the licenses to use more cameras at once.
The 5 bays give you ample space. I have 5 x 10 TB WD RED drives and with RAID, it gives me 35 TB of formatted space.
The Virtual Machine Manager works, but it isolates me from the raw drive images, so I prefer how QNAP easily exposes the drive images their version, primarily for backup purposes. For VM's, in my opinion, QNAP is a better choice.
The iSCSI feature works well.
This one comes with an external power brick, which I like better than some previous versions of 5 bay Synology NAS'.
Technically, you can upgrade it to 16 GB of RAM if needed for virtual machines. Synology doesn't support it, but it works.
Depending on your needs, both the DS1019+ (5 bay) and DS718+ (2 bay) are great NAS' and easily recommend them.
I only have two 8 TB drives configured thus far, with three open bays ready for expansion.
Very satisfied!
