Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 brought back a whole lot of memories, mostly good but some not so good. The graphics are light years ahead of the n64, and Gamecube but are they impressive for the Switch? Not really. I have a 65” 4K TV but the graphics still look rather rough and grainy and there were real gameplay issues when I couldn’t spot things I needed to complete objectives. It’s been almost two decades since I played the originals but I don’t get the impression that a lot of improvements were made to the game mechanics and they feel dated. The skaters defy gravity as they skate uphill with nearly as much ease as downhill and rarely kick for momentum. They have an inexorable forward motion that becomes very obvious when you find yourself repeatedly bouncing off walls and barricades. I also found myself fighting with the camera which felt like a real throwback, in a bad way.
Another blast from the past was the high difficulty. A lot of my old skills came back fairly quickly including muscle memory related to manuals, reverts and ollies. What I found really challenging was the pro and sick scores but I eventually figured out that I needed to vert, revert, manual and then try and stack on the multipliers. It was still challenging but my scores went up significantly. Still, there were a lot of moments of swearing and thoughts of flinging my controller. It took me just under a week to open every level except Chopper Drop and after switching skater, I’m moving through the game much faster the second time now that my skills have been honed.
I’ll be straight up. The last three games I played before THPS 1+2 were The Witcher 3, LA Noire and Hades. I definitely enjoyed these games more and found each one very difficult to put down. LA Noire is actually a decade old but still feels far more advanced than THPS 1+2. The game mechanics of hunting down items or trying to score points in a relatively small area with a 2 minute time limit feels antiquated. It even feels antiquated when compared to THPS 4 which came out in 2002 and got rid of the time limit and dramatically increased level sizes. Each time I open a new level a wave of nostalgia hits me and memories of level details flood back. After about an hour my nostalgia has waned as I’ve spent time trying to find items and mentally map out runs. When I start getting to the more difficult objectives the profanity starts to fly and it can become a bit of a grind (no pun intended).
The Switch version of Pro Skater 1+2 currently holds an 85% on Metacritic That’s an excellent score but a far cry from the mid to high 90’s that the first four games were receiving. In fact, three of the top 15 highest rated games of all-time are Tony Hawk games and the Playstation version of THPS2 is the second highest rated game ever. I suspect that there is a bit of nostalgia factoring into the rating scores of 1+2 because I really don’t think that if this game were released new today that it would get this high of a score. The funny thing is that Activision proved that there was a huge market for extreme sports games but nobody else picked up the mantle. I thought the 2002 Aggressive Inline might be competition but Activision bought up the development studio and no sequel was made. I tried Skate It but found it a pale imitation.
I don’t regret buying THPS 1+2 in the least and if Vicarious Visions did another remaster I’d buy it in a heartbeat. I just think that the door is wide open for another company to come in and do a true current generation skateboarding game. The last brand new Tony Hawk game was 5 which got a miserable score of 32. If skateboarding games are truly dead then I guess I can mourn their death but maybe 1+2 will show that the genre can thrive if the games aren’t garbage.

El único detalle que pondría es que en algún momento del traslado (quizás en aduana) abrieron un poco el empaque para verificar el contenido, eso no afecto el producto pero creo que es necesario tener cuidado con ese tipo de detalles.

The inputs to do tricks are "fighting game" style and that suits me but is not to everyone's taste.
It feels great on the switch
