SmarttThings Hub saves my house from water leaks and floooding
Love my Samsung SmartThings hub. It works 24x7 monitoring and protecting my home from operating video cameras, leak detection, and intrusion detection. I also use it to monitor and operate my Samsung Vacuum Cleaner. For leak detection I use a Dome actuator that I operate locally or from any place in the world to turn my water main on and off. The Dome is shown in the picture sitting on my water main lever handle. If I leave home and forget to turn the water main off, no problem I just use Samsung SmartThings to operate the Dome. The reason I do all of this is because my house flooded from a toilet hose bust, we lost 7 rooms to water damage and it took almost a year to restore our home. That will not happen ever again. I can say since installing the water leak detection system I have save my home from damage twice now from vanity sink leaks. Just as soon as the water sensor detected a leak, it notified the SmartThings Hub which in turn notified the Dome and cut the water main OFF! Works great!!! I would recommend this to all. The insurance companies should offer these systems to their customers just to avoid the cost of flood repair.

Purchased this last week to secure a large remote workshop that has a slow dsl internet connection maintained for when I'm working there. After about two hours of research into zigbee/zwave/wifi solutions, I settled on the SmartThings hub as the foundation for my needs; when this 3 sensor + outlet kit dropped a $100, I decided to try it even though I felt that z-wave Plus sensors would be better than the Zigbee sensors included with this kit. 20 minutes physical setup and 30 minutes working with the android app and everything is working incredibly. I'm using a magnetic multipurpose sensor on a door, another multipurpose sensor on a garage door (must set this in the app), and the motion detector which I've tested is reliable and plenty sensitive at 25 feet from movement. I have the hub on the other side of a wall about 30 feet from the sensors. No issues at all. All the hardware is very well designed and I've found no issues with the software. The instructions were lacking some important details such as the multipurpose sensors must be mounted vertically to monitor a tilting or sliding garage door (figure that out via google). Also, do not pull out the battery insulators (plastic strips) until you have the hub plugged in within 15 feet of the sensors. Another 10 minutes on google and I have it configured to auto arm / disarm when my buddies with androids and iphones leave / arrive in the vicinity of the shop. Very useful. The outlet controller turns on a bring light whenever the alarm is triggered AND when somebody arrives in the area of the shop. Very cool. I'm going to add a siren down the road. Now I think I'm probably going to put a system in our home next year. Really happy.

I got this kit, mainly as a way to keep and "eye" on my place, automate window A/C usage and give the impression of people being in the house. It allows for all this things easily. To control the A/C unit I did buy the [Aeon Labs DSC06106-ZWUS] smart switch. The door sensor also sense temperate and motion, I use the to let me know when doors are open and to control the A/C unit based on the temperate they read. The motion sensor is in my hallway and like the other sensors also read temperature, it turn on my hallway's light whenever anyone passes there. The light it controls is a CREE connected LED light bulb, which of course also connects to the SmartThings system. The last item included, is an outlet switch that lets me control a lamp in my house based on the system automation of "manually" within the app, to give the impression someone is there.

There are many technology sites listing the vulnerability of current smart home systems, that is why I will not the using ANY smart LOCKS. As it stands if something is hacked in my system, the worst that can happen is that all the outlet are turned on increasing me power bill, but no doors will be unlocked. Unfortunately the vulnerability is based on the 2 underlying (Z-Wave & ZigBee) protocols and will not be solved until new items are available with updated and more secure versions of the protocol are available. Since this is a protocol issue, it affects ALL system that use them.

1 year later: Dec 2017 update:
Got replacement motion sensor which works well. Also added a few controlled outlet devices (1 Zigbee, 1 Zwave) which work well for light controls and extend network out to my garage which is close by but is a separate building. Also added garage door controller (GoControl/Linear/Iris), and Ecobee Lite 3 thermostat. Overall, I am pleased with the SmartThings hub and devices and the app on my Android phone. Raised from 3 to 4 stars mostly due to broad device support, good integration with Echo/Alexa for voice control, and support for both Zigbee and Zwave protocols. Also the phone app has been upgraded a few times with new, useful features.

Initial setup is pretty good. Having trouble with the motion sensor device. Both in connecting to the hub and actually detecting motion. The other sensors seem to work well and I have integrated the outlet with my Echo so I can use voice command to turn that on/off. Echo doesn't yet directly support asking for the other sensor status (open/closed, temps, battery levels).

I went to online chat with Samsung to work on the motion detector problem. Was going fine and at critical moment, the chat broke connection. Might have been my fault if I hit wrong button. Had to restart chat. This chat went to completion and they said they will send me a new sensor because this one connects and reports status (temp and battery level) but does not detect motion.

Note that the motion sensor in my package is a 2015 version. There is a newer 2016 version. You might want to be sure that you are getting a 2016 Kit. It seems this one might be one that has been sitting on the shelf awhile. I think the other items are current.

Will update with status on motion sensor setup when replaced and resolved.

I have been pleased with the this system. SmartThings components work well with the hub. Unfortunately some after market z-wave products which are supposed to work with the hub don't stay connected very well - (ie - Monoprice smoke detectors and door sensors)
