For the build, UNRAID was selected as it serves dual purposes--both as a NAS and a hypervisor for Virtual Machines and Docker containers; additionally, setting up bonded 10Gbit links is pretty seamless with near-zero configuration.
For the parts:
- MSI Godlike MEG x570
- AMD 3900x (12 core / 24 threads)
- 128GB Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX (OC'ed to 3200MHz)
- 16x 1TB Samsung 860 EVO SSD's
- 8x 8TB Seagate IronWolf HDD's
- 2x Intel 10Gbit Ethernet Adapters (bonded)
- MegaRaid 9305-24i HBA (connecting all 24x disks)
- Radeon VII GPU
All Seagate IronWolf drives were verified for warranty and came back as expected (full warranty). This was a bit of a risk as I've seen a number of stories where OEM drives are being sent in addition to drives that were barely inside of the warranty period--glad to confirm that these were not.
With the build live, the Seagate drives are working great and are already 20% filled. They've been extremely reliable and fast (for standard HDD's) and I'll be looking to Seagate as I begin planning to expand the storage in the coming months.
This 8TB drive is performing admirably for about a month since I made the swap. It is synchronized with 2 USB drives that I plug into my two laptops. This allows me to keep 3 versions of each file; one on each laptop and one on the NAS. they update automatically so I always have the most recent version of every file. I've been using Seagate drives for many years and I can say they are as reliable as any drives on the market, but can't say they are problem-free. I have had a couple fail over the years, but in general they outlast their warranties by several years (I've owned 2 that haven't in nearly 30 years and Seagate replaced both). These Iron Wolf models are fairly rugged and seem quite capable of handling the extra workload of network drives. The drawback is that they aren't as fast as the ones I use in my pcs.
I bought 4 more of the 8 TB drives for my latest NAS last week. My other 2 existing NAS boxes use the same drives. I could install 12 TB drives in these NAS, but there's still a significant price jump per TB when you move to anything 10 TB or larger.
The next time I run out of NAS storage space, hopefully price per TB will have dropped and I can just upgrade to 12 TB drives. Then I can use these 8 TB drives for offline backups.
1) Out of 8 TB only 7 TB is available.
2) Sometime getting that grinding and clicking noise.
Everything else is good and I am happy with this drive.
