I've always been a big Asus fan, so when these sleek, new, uniquely hued, machines came out just as I was seeking a replacement for my 6-year-old previous ZenBook, I jumped at the opportunity to buy one. SO very glad I did, because this is such a lovely device. I was a little skeptical of the color and new build, but it has certainly grown on me, and I get compliments frequently.
Perhaps the hardest thing to get used to, and maybe a con if you're a big accessories fan, is that with the tiny bezel around the screen, there's no need for much vertical length on the machine, so it's *much* more rectangular than the laptops you might be used to. This means that the sleeve that comes with this laptop is one of the few snug-fitting protective accessories you'll be able to find.
I haven't used this machine for much heavy-duty work yet, but I will update this review once I've downloaded and used Adobe Creative Suite on it, and report on its handling of some of these juggernaut programs. That being said, everything I *have* run has been great. The speeds to load are fantastic, and the loaded version of Windows does well on the machine.
Some of my favorite features:
The backlit keyboard with multiple brightness settings
The function-lock options (notably absent on past Asus models, which was annoying)
The light-up number pad (more a party trick than anything, but is actually pretty useful when I *do* need to take on some number crunching)
The battery life - WOW. Charges fully in about 1.5 hours, and I've gotten it to last up to NINE hours on that charge
The aesthetic - This machine is gorgeous, and nobody is going to deny that. The slim bezels, the overall thin profile, the blue and gold color... its just so dang pretty.
I was certainly disappointed with *how* jumpy the touchpad was at first, but with the simple fix and the excellent machine you're left with after, this is a great deal on a lovely machine.
PS: I haven't experienced the coil whine so many users here have talked about. I'm on the machine in a silent room now, for instance, and all I can hear is my own typing. *shrug*
My only advice to to make sure you know how much memory you need. I have 512 GB of storage but a 1 TB version is available. There is also an option for a better graphics card for gaming. I I do not game, so I chose the standard version which I understand will handle casual gaming. The majority of my use is with image editing - and this full HD display does not disappoint. Early on, battery life seems to be excellent. This is a beautiful, sleek laptop.
The few negative things that I've experienced are pretty minor and haven't impacted usage too much, but I definitely want to share those so others are aware and can know what to expect.
- The touchpad works perfectly about 99% of the time, but every now and then there will be this spurt of a few seconds where it seems to get hung up and won't move. It's almost like it lags behind. I'll just swirl my finger around the touchpad for a bit till it catches up and then it's back to normal. Very annoying in those couple seconds, but it's a rare enough and short-lived thing that doesn't really ruin my use of the computer.
- The speakers are on the bottom of the laptop, which is a little awkward, and I've even had the volume turned all the way up without it sounding too loud. You definitely don't want to sit it on anything too soft that can muffle the sounds if you want to watch something on it. You can still hear everything, but it'd sound better if the sound was pointed upwards.
- Sometimes the internet connection will mess up after the laptop falls asleep. It'll wake back up and say it's connected, but it'll have the little yellow triangle symbol on it and say it's connected but with no internet. All you have to do to fix it is disconnect and reconnect and it works fine after that.
- It attracts fingerprints super easily, if that's a concern for you!
Top reviews from other countries
I've been on a Macbook Pro for the past 9 years and while I believe that there was no PC to compete back in 2010, things have changed a lot. I am not really a fan of the new Macs and find they are far too overpriced if you choose specs similar to the Asus Zenbook UX433FA-DH74, plus Mac seems to think you want to carry dongles around with you. My main desktops have always been custom built PC's to very high specs and this has allowed me to use OSX and Windows side by side all decade. I used to prefer OSX because of the superior stability but Windows should have caught up by now, at least you would think so. There will be plenty of debate and personal preference on the topic but I have also found myself move away from iPhone and on to Andriod because I prefer more customization. So, all that said, I did decide that I wanted my laptop to also be a Windows laptop and my search led me to the UX433FA-DH74 for specs and quality vs price. I could not find a Core i7-8565U, 16GB, 512GB SSD laptop with a metal design that came close to this one.
The reviews on various websites for this laptop seem to be quite good on average.
The main complaints anywhere you read are jumpy mousepad and noisy fans.
With the mousepad I have no problems so far, works fine for me. I do notice that if I press too hard and of inconsistent force, there is a tiny skip here and there. It may be a case of just learning your new mousepad and getting used to it. With a light touch, I see no skipping so far and am very happy with it. The number pad is a great idea and I have already found that useful.
As for the fans, I did hear them after setting up Windows for the first time and installing my programs, moving my files over etc. They did seem to go on for a while but after my standard check for BIOS updates at the manufacturer's website I did find one, installed it, and haven't heard the fans since. Very hard to say if that has anything to do with it or not because I didn't see much documentation about what the BIOS update addressed.
Some complain that it is no good for games, I think those people need to read the specs first. This is NOT a laptop with dedicated graphics, this is a laptop with Intel HD graphics, the UX433FA version. If you want there is an Nvidia MX150 2GB on the UX433FN model for light gaming and while I would have preferred that, I couldn't find it anywhere.
The only thing I don't like so far is the glossy screen, I have always had matte screens on my laptops so this is something I will have to get used to. So far it hasn't been too much of an issue in my office but I haven't taken it out and about in full daylight yet and I hope it doesn't bother me too much. If it does I will have to return it and wait for a matte version to appear.
Battery life seems good to me but I have no other new laptop to compare it to, my mac was giving me about 1 hour these days even after replacing the battery several times, so that is no comparison. I'm sure there are other ultrabooks that beat this one on battery life but anything over 5 hours is more than enough for me, this one has done that by a long shot already.
UPDATE:
An amazing laptop for everything other than live audio, unfortunately this is a common Windows problem that they have not yet figured out. If you don't need to worry about live audio production then you will love this laptop. It is lightning fast, great looking, light, and my only problem at first was the glossy screen which I soon got used to. Chipset driver conflicts that you wouldn't normally notice cause latency spikes which means it is a no go for live audio. I really wanted to keep it so I tried for days to find a solution but was not successful. Looks like I am stuck with Apple for a while longer.
I watched a full season of Game of thrones (10episodes) on it with a full charged battery, and still had enough for 45 mins. It has different battery saving levels (battery saver- better battery-better performance- best peformance). I rate 10/10 for battery life.
The build quality is awesome and it feels super solid and crazy light. (lighter than all my textbooks).
keyboard feels good and solid as well as the mouse pad. I had no problem with it at all. The touch numbers on the mouse pad are working fine and the reason why some people are saying it is not good is, they are always in rush! you shouldn't press it hard and fast expecting it to function like your flagship smartphone!!
It comes with a bag which surprised me! covers your laptop from dirt or getting damaged.
Performance with adobe photoshop is flawless. It is so quite in class as well! absolutely in love. Thanks for the fast delivery.
Overall, It is the best laptop if you are a student looking for an affordable laptop to bring it to school, do your assignments and install some heavy apps.
Lets compare some rivals! Hp spectureX360 (heavy - battery killer), Huawei matebookx pro(Chinese spy- no customer service), Hp envy series with AMD system (terrible for games -heavy), Lenovo thinkpad ( expensive- simple design), Macbooks ( expensive- recent issue with keyboards), Dell XPS ( expensive).

touchpad - not as responsive but if you use a wireless mouse, like me, most of the time, the numeric pad mode is quite useful;
audio - had an BIOS issue not detecting the built-in speaker intermittently but this has apparently been fixed with the new release;
other than these, the unit is just about right for use for small office / home office; the SSD supplements the performance of your usual SOHO applications, even autocad
extra care in handling as the display has no bezels and can easily get damaged
