Let's go through what I've noticed in my 6 months of owning these:
Battery Life:
When I received these, one of the cameras was only about 70% charged and the other around 90%+. I decided not to charge them and went ahead and installed them. The lowest charged camera went to the back deck and the other on the front porch at the entryway. After thousands of events, the 70% charged camera finally lost its battery life in late December. That's a little under six months. However, I did have an enormous amount of traffic around my home for a period of a couple of months with home projects and outside laborers. I would get fifteen to twenty second clips a dozen times a day sometimes just from one camera. I'd say that's good battery life. I think for the average amount of clips, I could squeeze eight months or more out of these devices. Probably not a full year.
Picture quality:
These cameras are absolutely wonderful in how crisp the images are. It's true high definition and you can discern quite a bit of detail even from a distance. Night-vision is spot on. I have never really owned a true night vision device, but these are no joke. It's all I could have wanted and the image quality is barely decreased.
Audio quality:
I can hear people from about fifteen to twenty feet away from the cameras. That's not bad at all. I would hear contractors come up to the porch then around the landscape until they got close to the driveway about twenty or more feet from my front door. Perfectly reasonable. The audio is also very good. It's not as impressive as the battery life or image quality, but I can usually hear exactly the voices or noises being made when the camera motion detection goes off and alerts me that something triggered it.
Two-way voice:
Works as advertised. I'm not as impressed with this feature as others. You have to hold down a button in the app to talk and then release it, much like a walkie talkie. If you are not used to the app and speak too quickly, the first part of what you say will be cut off. I'm not sure how much I like this, but it does work when you need it to. Also, the voice is loud enough from the camera that I have been able to have a brief conversation with a contractor when they were at the door. A little odd about the two-way voice, but overall not too bad.
Motion detection:
Just right, I'd say. You can adjust this quickly in the app and make it more or less sensitive. I haven't had any issues with motion detection since I've owned these. I do wish you could have motion detection at longer ranges if you desired, even though it'd create a lot more events, because I'd like to see what happens at my mailbox. That's not an option, but in a way that might not be too bad of a thing. You might get a lot of "false positives" if you had motion detection that far. I also have never tried zones and nor do I know how to use them. I might give that a go at some point, but it never made sense to me.
Homebase:
You can fit up to 128GB microSD card in this for video storage. I got a 4K-compatible card with UHS-1 even though the video is only 1080p. I've never had any issues with storage or video playback. In fact, the video compression technology is so good, that even with THOUSANDS of video clips, I only used about 2% of the storage space by late December 2019. 128GB is just overkill for two cameras. I bought a third, but never hung it up as I became satisfied with just the two for the time-being. I wouldn't get a 128GB card or even a 64GB card unless you have more than three cameras or the price is simply too good to pass up on the cards.
--A point of recommendation: definitely get the fastest microSD cards you can (UHS-1). I went with a 4K-compatible card just to ensure the read/write speeds were as good as I could get and the price wasn't much more.
--Note: I know that the system comes with a 16GB microSD card. You may be fine with just that. If you only have two cameras installed, I'd say see how long you get with that.
App/software:
The app is well-designed and has had some good updates. I love how easy it is to quickly tune in to the cameras and view them in almost real-time within just a few seconds of opening the thumbnail. You can also jump into two-way voice very easily through this. Managing all aspects of the system is made simple in the app as well. I do wish for better ways of managing video storage, however. From what I've found, you either delete single video clips at a time, or you format the entire SD card. I haven't found a way to purge videos older than a certain date so I'm not sure that exists. I had thousands of video clips stored in the Homebase so I just formatted the entire card.
Camera security:
The cameras come with an alarm system you can enable or disable if you desire. Basically, sudden movements of significance will trigger an anti-theft alarm. While I am unsure it does anything special, the alarm from the Homebase is extremely loud and I think the cameras alarm as well. The only two times this has happened to me is when a contractor pressure-washing the house pulled the camera down for safety and the Homebase "freaked out". It was far louder than even my security system. Wow, that will get your attention. The other time was when I took one of the cameras down to charge and forgot to turn off the anti-theft function. Thankfully, the Homebase has a very visible button that you can push to disable the alarm (it's the same button you use to sync cameras).
Range:
I haven't had too much of an issue with range because I keep these cameras within about twenty-five feet of the Homebase, but I bought these as a present for my sister's home and through too many walls, the garage, and the distance, there is a bit of an issue with live video. That's disappointing. Thankfully, the recorded events are saved just fine without any visual artifacts or lag. I hear eufy is working on a range extender, but that's about the extent I know of it. Keep in mind, the Homebase uses its own internal, secure network so you can't buy any networking equipment to boost the range at this time. For now, I'd recommend keeping the cameras within about twenty to thirty feet of the Homebase when some walls are in the way. You may be able to get a bit more without more than one wall, but "your mileage may vary". I imagine the Homebase uses a 2.4GHz network, which is great with penetrating or bouncing around walls, but I don't know that for sure. I think the radio may need to be strengthened in future versions or at least range extenders need to be developed. Range extenders would be best for now that way existing eufyCam owners can get the benefits of longer range.
Notifications:
I've never had an issue with this. Within a few seconds of motion being detected, a notification is sent to the account holders' cell phones (you can have more than one person on the account through an invitation) and you can view what is going on. It's a nice feature and we've used it several times to even simply check when our dog comes back to the door from being let out during the times we don't go out with him. As an aside, yes we do watch our dog (lol) and check ourselves, but if we have stepped away to do something else such as check on our cooking, it's nice to know the cameras will alert us as soon as motion gets detected at the door. Nifty.
Mounting:
The cameras can be mounted permanently with a screwed in mount or temporarily with a magnetic mount. I've only used the screwed in mounts and have never had an issue. They hold the camera almost always perfectly still from where you put it so long as you do tighten it down. Very easy to install and barely requires any effort.
Customer support:
I've never needed it, but I had recommended this system to a friend of mine and she bought it for her home. Unfortunately, the Homebase she purchased had issues with reading and writing to microSD cards so she had to get a replacement. She talked to them just before the Christmas holiday and after a very short time of troubleshooting once she explained what she had done, they agreed to send her a brand new Homebase as soon as possible though they did reassure her that while there may be a bit of a delay due to holidays, it would arrive soon. Sure enough, it didn't take long for her to receive the replacement. Thankfully, the replacement had no issues whatsoever.
Value:
By far the best battery-operated security camera system on the market. I simply cannot justify switching to anything else at any price point, unless eufy does not come out with range extenders for when I want to cover more of my property (1.25 acres). I am so glad I never bought any of the competitors. Maybe they are good, maybe they aren't... at this point I simply have no reason to care. This is a fantastic system.
Conclusion:
If you care about home security and general peace of mind, buy these! You can easily add as many cameras as you like--to my knowledge there isn't a limit, but I could be mistaken. I have now installed three of these systems at three different, unique homes. I simply cannot recommend these enough. One of the best purchases I have ever made.
What I like most about the Eufy Cam E system is the Eufy App on my iPhone. The videos download and play fast. The Eufy App is easy to use and I like the ability to seem video clips almost immediately. Navigating the App is easy. Video quality, motion detection, picture quality I gave five stars as I compare it to the systems I have used.
The only thing I'm not sure about is how long the one charge will last per camera. So far, I'm still at five bars on battery life and they are placed in high traffic areas, i.e. front door and family room. I don't have many outdoor outlets so this wireless Eufy Cam E system will meet my need to view the back and side of my property.
The two-way audio is very good too.
I'll test this system out for about a week or so before purchasing additional cameras.
Pros:
1. Videos stored locally on microSD card, so no monthly fees.
2. Completely wireless, battery operated. You can connect a micro USB cable to connect the camera to power if you have an outlet nearby. Don't know how long one charge will last at this point.
3. Eufy App is very good, easy to use and view videos
4. Two-way audio is very good.
This is a quality made product and the performance is overall excellent for my home application.
All three cameras battery life lasted past the 365-day rating. Each are exposed to wind and winter elements. They do not sit in direct sunlight or extended periods of direct sunlight. I do have 3rd party silicone covers on them. I experience no connectivity issues.
As for my previous issue with more camera logic; I'm able to set up a combination of customizable modes and schedule events to come close to what I want, but it would still be nice to schedule certain cameras for specific times and not all of them.
The app itself has received numerous updates over the past two years and is straightforward to use.
I would still recommend eufyCam E system. I see it go on sale often on Amazon and the eufy site. So, keep an eye out for that.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have owned the eufyCam E since July 2020 and here are my observations through the summer and early fall seasons. I have one camera mounted about 9ft high on a tree in my backyard. The other is mounted on the brick side of my place along a heavily used walkway also 9ft high.
For both cameras I use the default settings: optimal battery life (20 second clip), sensitivity ~80%. I utilize the Activity Zones to omit the stretch of road the appears in one camera view and a flowering vine plant that waves in the wind on the other camera view. This helps a lot with unwanted triggers. I also use the Automation feature where logic can be applied. For example, if Camera-A is triggered then immediately start recording with Camera-B. I also turned off the alarms and LED lights. I get App notifications when there is a trigger.
Both cameras are responsive. Movement is picked up captured on the included 16GB SD card. With the default settings plus my automation setup, I would say that you could keep about 30-40 days worth of recordings before you have to delete them. I typically delete the recordings every few days and download to DropBox the ones I want to keep. Of course, you can insert a 128 GB micro SD card if more storage is needed. My cameras were installed mid July 2020. As of this review, they are currently at 75% battery life each. This is on-track for the 365-day rating, but we shall see once we come out of winter.
Daytime images are crisp and clear just be sure to keep your camera pointed away from the sun. Night vision could be better - don't get me wrong - you can see textures and shapes okay, but finer details such as faces require someone to be still for a moment to properly identify, but I feel this is the case for all nigh vision cameras mounted 9 foot high. You have the option to disable night vision, but I have not tried that. I do have wildlife trigger the cameras (squirrels, cats, dogs, skunks, etc.) which isn't a big deal to me. Please note that there is no AI detection with eufyCam E model. Occasionally I'll have waving vines or large maple leafs blowing around triggering the camera. Not a deal breaker for me since it isn't too often. I could always turn down the sensitivity if needed.
Connectivity has never been an issue for me. My full WiFi signal reaches my backyard and I would say that is the only pre-requisite you need to mount the camera outdoors.
I will upload images/video this week. I'll also update after winter.
~~PROS~~
- No subscription costs or recording limitations set by a subscription service
- Easy to set up and configure
- Included memory card offers plenty of initial storage for two cameras
- Expandable storage via 128 GB micro SD or NAS/Real-time options
- Hub is compact and looks nice
- There are custom settings for each camera that lets you record 0-120 seconds
- this model works with other eufy products
- 2-way communication built in each camera
~~ON THE FENCE~~
- App receives regular updates, but could be improved some
- Night vision is okay
~~CONS~~
- No AI on the eufyCam E model
- More camera Automation options would be nice. For example, setting logic to run from 1:00-6:00AM only.
I would recommend this product. I recently was gifted a third camera which I'm excited to set up.
Top reviews from other countries
The app is very clean looking and being able to customize a schedule is a huge plus. The picture quality and sound quality are very good and the range on the unit seems good as well. The farthest camera is about 60 feet from the base with 3 walls in between and it still works without any issues, managing 2 signal bars out of 3. This was a pleasant surprise.
The cameras feel solid and easy to mount. The ball socket seemed to be a little loose when trying to hold the weight (Jammed full of battery I assume) of the camera in the position you place it. I ended up folding a piece of electrical tape and put it in there to snug it up. The sensor range is quite good and I like that you can set it to set off an alarm from the camera when it detects motion. This will be good for anyone snooping around vehicles a night although it also spooked a raccoon a few nights ago as well.
Overall I really can't find anything wrong with this system so far. Time will tell on how long the battery lasts but I have a good feeling it will last a year or close to it being that it's Anker. My only real complaint right now is I want to pick up one additional addon camera but there doesn't seem to be anywhere to get one in Canada. It's not available on Amazon.ca, Amazon US won't ship it to Canada, and even the manufacturers website doesn't ship to Canada. Very strange and kind of a bummer. I've sent out emails about trying to acquire an addon camera so we will see what happens.
I have received a response from Eufylife support and was informed addon cameras will be available in Canada in late July. Just have to wait now so I can expand from 2 cameras to 3.
security system I figure start with the minor details first. First it is very frustrating to get activity zones to work effectively and once set, seems to not detect motion at all. Also, if a subject is moving quickly, while motion may be detected there is no 3 seconds look back which means you may not actually have a subject by the time the recording starts. Thus, camera placement is critical and should be positioned where subjects roam across a wider field of view. I do not consider either of these issues showstopppers, as the activity zones aren't necessary if you tune the motion sensitivity and the triggered camera recording delay can be accommodated by overlapping fields of view using multiple cameras.
On a completely positive note the cameras are very easy to install, the battery life is very good and the local storage is very cost effective over the competition. Since we have limited bandwidth at our Cottage, local storage was essential, thus I spent a bit extra and purchased 128G SDXC cards for the Base. I never worry about storing locally as the app makes it easy to watch and download the footage to your laptop or smartphone directly. I also purchased a small APS UPS in the event the power goes out so I never lose a recording which far exceeds that of the competition. This is why I purchased the EufyCam E system and I have not been disappointed.
I also like that all of the settings can be done remotely and I see the software improving with each update.
I also am extremely happy with the included mounts, especially the magnetic mount. Easy to pull the camera down for charging, but dont forget to disable the theft alarm, because it works very well too with no false positives thus far.
Battery life for the camera is very good, given all the false alerts due to my motion settings two of the cameras needed to be recharged after 8 months, while the other 3 are still at full bars, so I will get well over a year on these.
But even with the two, the cameras can be fully charged in less than 2 hours if you use the base to charge them. The battery icons are readily displayed so you will always know their status.
Lastly the support was fantastic and very responsive when one of my cameras went down, earning Eufy the 5 stars.
We even mounted a camera just for captures of the lake!
So all in all, this is the best set of cameras I have had thus far.
My only suggestions is for Eufy to add geofencing in order to automatically change the camera to home or away rather than having to remember to do it manually. That would be sweet!
I highly recommend this product.
