Good design, but this unit malfunctioned

Good design, but this unit malfunctioned
I'm exchanging the unit because it disconnected several times in different activities and produced greater deviation from my standard HRM than expected.BackgroundI have used a Garmin Fenix GPS watch and chest strap HRM for many years while rowing, cycling, skiing (Nordic and backcountry), walking, etc. I find Garmin's chest strap occasionally uncomfortable and sometimes develop rashes. I was looking for an alternative for when the chest strap bugs me and, after reading DC Rainmaker's review, the Scosche R+2.0 seemed a good choice. The ideal scenario for me would have been the Scosche performing just like my Garmin chest strap, but more comfortable and on the arm.Likes-Comfortable-Easy on and off-No need to moisten electrodes-Battery life seems adequate-I like the strap: its adjustability, easy on/off, easily removedIssues-The unit disconnected once when cycling, twice when rowing, once when nordic skiing, twice when walking. This is a hassle. One may not notice that it's disconnected for some time. Getting it restarted - a long press through possibly several layers of clothing - is a hassle and requires stopping for rowing, skiing and possibly cycling. Restarting doesn’t always work. Or requires two steps: long press for 5+ seconds to turn the unit off, then long press for 3+ seconds to turn the unit on, and then wait for it to connect to your device (say, watch or phone) and to start sending HR data. Again, this is a hassle, especially in the middle of an activity, and shouldn’t happen.(“Disconnected” is probably inaccurate - when this has happened, and I’ve thought to check, the Fenix has said the Scosche is still connected, but it’s not receiving any data.)-The unit deviates somewhat to significantly from my Garmin HRM. Having familiarity with Garmin’s optical HRM built into the Fenix and from DC Rainmaker’s review, I was not expecting perfection or a 1-to-1 match. But it deviated more than expected. -2-3 BPM average deviation (actually, mean absolute error, or MAE) -Up 30% off at times -Worse deviation than reported by DC Rainmaker -The scatterplot of the Garmin to Scosche HRMs suggests a correlation less than I would have expected, but this is open to debate.I’m returning this unit in exchange for another just like it. I will update my review if there are differences.Fig 1A plot of the Scosche and Garmin HRMs. Undemanding circumstances: walking, no vigorous arm movements, Scosche under clothing, shielded from ambient light. From ~9:05 to 10:00, the Scosche performs well. MAE (average deviation from Garmin) = 1.8 BPMAt ~10:00, the Scosche “disconnects”, the Fenix stops receiving an HR input. At ~10:03, I stop and attempt to restart the Scosche. The Fenix receives HR input, but it deviates significantly from the Garmin chest strap. The resulting MAE is 5.7 BPM, excluding the period where no HR is received.Fig 2A scatterplot of the Scosche and Garmin HRMs attempting to show correlation.

I bought a more expensive heart rate monitor to wear on my chest and it didn’t work, plus the battery was super difficult to install. This device charges in the wall, and it lasts a very long time on one charge. It’s comfortable to wear, and my heart rate is consistent, plus it’s easy to pair with MapMyRun (haven’t been able to get it to connect to Strava yet). If you’re looking for a low cost monitor, I’d recommend trying this out.

This works great for me (light skinned white male with a light tan) wearing it on my upper forearm while running. It never peaks or drops when it shouldn't and it picks up my heart rate change on intervals without delay (ramping up and download). Also had no issues connecting to either my Coros Pace 2 or Samsung Watch 4. I've compared against similar (same course and effort but at different times) runs with my Hammerhead chest strap and the graphs look the same (max, uphills, ..)

The strap is great, it is a bit stretchy so I don't have to have it tight to be secure.

For those that care where it's made, I went with the Scosche because it's not made in China (it is made in the Philippines).

So we use this along with an app for my kids to track heart rate. It does the job well, is easy to use and adjust, battery lasts decently long and comes with a charger cord. The only thing we have a slight issue is that the band comes off easily. Never when wearing it but often when trying to switch it between kids or to charge, the piece that connects the band to the device will unhook. So just be aware of that.

I don't like leaving bad reviews. I really don't.

I got this device to monitor to compare readings to my Apple Watch. The Apple Watch does a pretty good job - but it gets confused by my arrhythmia, and frequently shows heart rates in the 40s (due to the arrhythmia).

I was hoping that the Shosche monitor would overlook the arrhythmia and give me a more accurate result than my watch.

I have a pacemaker that doesn't let my heart rate drop below 85 for more than a few seconds at a time.

As I sit here, writing this review, the Shosche monitor is showing a heart rate of 45. It's been stuck below 50 for quite a while. The Apple Watch is showing a more accurate heart rate of 90.

Perhaps this Shosche thing would be good for athletes, but it's certainly wrong for me. (Note - I've recharged this a few times, with no change in the reports. The iPhone software shows 'zones' - with each zone being higher than the one before it (the higher the heart rate, the higher the zone number), but there's no way to set the zones, or to set alarms when the rate hits a particular zone.

It works with a few apps - most of which require payment to use --- but if the results are inaccurate, what good is the meter - or what it tells the app.

I haven't contacted the manufacturer about the problems with this device. Perhaps they'll replace it, but I doubt I'll have more luck with a new one.

For me, this band is a DEFINITE NO.

This was my experience. Yours might be different. I had the first version of this product for a couple of years and it worked very well for me. I decided to 'upgrade' to this version. The first R 2.0 I received paired quickly and easily with my Peloton, but it had wildly erratic readings. I've been using HR monitors for ten years and knew it was monitor, not user, error. I called Scosche CS after useless initial email response. Big shout out to phone CS from Scosche rep: I had a kind acknowledgement of my disappointment and a new unit in a day or two. I've given the replacement R 2.0 a month now and FOR ME the R 2.0 is unsatisfactory. It requires me to have absolutely precise placement: a millimeter too low or too high or too much to one side and readings begin to drop, and drop. If I sweat or move my arm and the band shifts around, just a little, the readings fall. And they fall A LOT (I periodically check the R 2.0 reading against my Galaxy Watch5.) The whole point of having an HR monitor that sends readings to my bike screen is so I can easily access reasonably accurate HR and push harder or pull back as necessary. The first unit was a dud and the replacement is simply too finicky. Scosche can and should do much better than this. Though their CS is terrific it can't make up for a mediocre product. Sadly, I'm on the hunt now for another product, by another brand. I gave this review 3 Stars, one of which was earned by excellent customer service on the phone. The first unit would have gotten 1 Star and its replacement 2 Stars.

I used the original which is still working but after 6 years of use has 50% of the original battery capacity as expected. The battery life on the 2+ is a huge upgrade and a bonus that the strap is now quicker and easier to fit. Also the multiple Bluetooth in addition to ANT+ connections is useful. These are very accurate as an alternative to wrist based or chest straps and would recommend. I use mine mostly for cycling both indoors with zwift and Trainerroad and outdoors road cycling

Paired with Garmin Epix 2 and it keeps disconnecting randomly, causing a frustrating experience during my run. On a 42mins run, it disconnected 13 times!

Searched this online and found out from a reviewer's site (under comments) that this has been a known issue. An update was released for iPhone since Jan 2024 and nothing so far for Android users.

Contacted Scosche support and their reply was to borrow an iPhone from someone else to do the update. Returned it immediately, luckily it's sold by Amazon!
