A Streaming Device Capable of Home Theater Controller AND Whole Home Automation
I used to run a home automation controller called iRule but they have ceased to exist. I was left with either going to something far more complex and expensive or integrating into the Alexa app. I chose the cheaper alternative and I haven't looked back.Fire TV Pros:Very expandableRuns all of my A/V components (including an A/V receiver and other streaming devices) REMOTELY via its IR output.Integrates with the rest of my Alexa-enabled devices (smart lights, switches, garage door opener, etc.)Set up was pretty straightforward for my devices.Cons:The remote is tiny and easily lost. I had to buy a 3rd party device that connects to it with an app that makes a dinging noise so I can track it down.Voice control pretty much only works to turn stuff on or enable routines. Ask it to go to a specific show on a specific streaming channel and that's where things start breaking down.I've had to power on/off about 10 times over the last year after the device crashed. If you have unpopular non-name brand or old A/V equipment the Fire TV may have an issue with figuring out the device's specific IR codes and there are zero options to add your own IR codes to the system... which I think is the biggest downside to this device. That's pretty much a development/software issue that could be resolved without a ton of effort and make this device endlessly expandable.Overall though I am very pleased and for someone with basic A/V and home-automation experience and expectations I found I can really leverage both the fire TV and Alexa app to build out full home automation on the cheap. That's what I'm doing and so far it's working out pretty good.
