Caution - Consider Carefully.

Caution - Consider Carefully.
The Echo Show 8 (Show) arrived in good condition and was delivered well ahead of the (initial) expected date. Thanks go to Amazon (Au) and Australia Post.I purchased the Show to replace a radio (love listening to my favourite station whilst cooking-up a storm) and tablet (recipes and cooking tutorials), to essentially lessen the clutter on my kitchen bench top (the Show performs the functions of both and more). I housed the Show on my kitchen bench (approx. 15cm from wall). Incidentally, three points to consider on such a placement:1. drape plastic wrap over the show to prevent soiling of the Show's fabric covering (especially if you have "little helpers").2. place the Show on a plate to offer protection against accidental spills.3. cleaning bench tops (especially with disinfectant wipes) may affect the integrity of the cabinet fabric covering, over time. The option of a plastic cabinet maybe a better alternative for such placements. After the initial set-up, I was eager to stream my favourite station (via Radio App 6IX). What a shock I received. What greeted me was a distorted and boomy noise (initial sound settings set to 50%). Furthermore, my kitchen bench top was clearly vibrating in accordance to the noise, produced by the Show. What a disappointment! I changed the sound settings to minimal bass. The issue was not satisfactorily resolved: still an unacceptable noise being produced and a resonating bench top - albeit with a reduction (I appreciate this is a Lo-Fi device). Subsequently, I have purchased the plastic stand (approx. Au$40) for the Show. Whilst the addition of the stand solved the issue of the shaking bench top, the overall tonal balance was still distorted and bassy - most unacceptable to me. Only as a last resort ... will I use the radio function on the Show.Nevertheless, the show's display is quite good, (although, probably not up to the standard of your home TV - in terms of vivid colours, image sharpness and video motion) but is very acceptable for an assisted device, in this class (particularly for still video eg. recipes etc.).Alexa functions best when presented with simple single discrete commands. I have found her error rate to be exceedingly low when such commands are given.Currently, I don't use the show. Therefore, it's of little value to me (buyers remorse?). I have gone back to using my old radio and tablet. This works best, for me.

I bought the Sandstone Fabric colour so it blends well with my light colour kitchen and it blends well above my second smaller fridge.

The Pros:
• Having installed Echo Show 8 for the family felt like a great decision for me over Christmas. Kids and Parents love their new devices.
• I enjoy using voice commands as well as touch screen control.
• I like the cam slider privacy feature which is why I bought this over the Google Nest Hub.
• I like the glowing screen sunrise feature, setting alarms and reminders, etc.
• I love being able to create a Smart Home and control RGB Lights and Smart Plugs in different rooms. Love it!!!
The Cons:
• It has to be plugged in for power. I wish it has the option for a battery for mobility
• The microphone is lacking. The Echo Dot (3rd Gen) has better voice-hearing than the more expensive and fancier Echo Show 8 (1st Gen)

I have read a lot of negative reviews & complaints primarily focusing on what people thought the Echo Show 8 "would/should" do, but does not. How not having a full screen clock (when it doesn't advertise that it does) justifies so many 1-star ratings beggars belief.

I paid $59 for this device and it is excellent for what I use it for. The speaker sound is fantastic; having word lyrics for songs automatically played on screen is a nifty feature; having my upcoming calendar events/sporting events on the screen is great; having it to play the morning news from my selected news source or watching some YouTube clips over breakfast is awesome; it makes a great kitchen timer & weather forecaster.

No, it is not a bedside clock, that's the Echo Show 5. No, it doesn't have access to every streaming app, that's a tablet. This is a smart display speaker with Alexa & it delivers. I wish I'd bought a few more.

Let's start with your expectations... If you currently own a Echo Show 5 and love it, then you will be disappointed.
If you don't own one, then you will imediately think this is great. Let's see why:

The Echo Show 5 and 8 are essentially the same looking unit, except of course the 8 is larger in every dimension, and it looks great. The screen is fantastic and responsive, the sound is awesome, enough said. The difference between the Show 5 and Show 8 from a user point of view has nothing to do with the hardware, but the software.

The Show 5 software works great as a bedside clock, so if you want a great tabletop clock get the Show 5, as the software revolves around this feature.
The Show 8 on the otherhand has the same software as the Show (10), and for the most part displays pretty useless information and totally wastes the large screen area that could be used for so much better use.

There is nothing wrong with this unit, it works great, and if you get it on special, it's even better, but amazon should be looking at these reviews and updating the software to allow the end user to select how and what gets displayed on the screen, and not think they know better. Anyway that's my two cents worth.

Great product, happy so far. Good sound quality, easy and great to video call with friends and relatively and watching movies sometime. Connects seemlessly to my Ring doorbell as well to answer. Good value for money.

The only comment to say against few setup issues at the start, have to call helpline and do factory reset. But since then working great

I have seen many reviews on this and each to their own. I haven’t owned a show 5 so I can’t mention the issue with the customisation of the home screen. This is what I know. I have had it for a couple of weeks. The sound is okay, not jaw dropping. The screen is clear and the bright. The ability to call works well and Alexa seems to work well also. Sometimes the volume peaks when you ask Alexa to do something. The volume button plays up when shifting the volume up and down just after requesting a song to be play. The scrolling screen is a bit of a gimmick. Other then that it’s a cracker of a device. I have it in the kitchen and it does what I need it to do. Clock size isn’t an issue and I am guessing with updates it will get better. Great unit at the introduction offer pricing.

I bought these when on special to start to set up my house. I had decided to replace my google hubs as I felt their voice recognition was poor and it got very annoying having to repeat myself. Alexas voice recognition is far superior and I love the fact I only have to ask once. They set up easily with my Swann home security cameras too so I can now say "Alexa.. show me my front door" and most of the time it does but I have to admit it sometimes doesnt but so far only fault I've found. I found them so easy to use that sometimes if my carer is watching something on the tv im not interested in, I just put on my headphones and watch something else on my Echo Show! Love these and can't wait for them to be on special again so I can buy some more!

Excellent product and great service from the seller. The only disappointment is the voice recognition which appears to be a common issue affecting all Alexa units
