Pros:
- The sound quality is clear, the bass is great (although I've had to tweak this in the app).
- The noise cancellation is fantastic; I've used these to play games on my pc and my girlfriend would have to scream at me to get my attention.
- The battery life is impressive! I've left these in my backpack for over week and just constantly forgot to charge them at home while using them moderately at work for 1-2 hrs a day and they have not ever run out on me.
Cons:
- The ambiance mode is a bit iffy and useless for me, but I can see how others would like a bit of white noise.
- The comfort level is not the greatest for long term use. After an hour of use, I definitely feel some ear fatigue. The rubber buds themselves are not that great in quality, and the device is a bit heavy on the ears. This can probably be eased a bit by buying better quality replacement buds.
Features - touch control is way more reliable than the Samsung. Also
Fit - They seem to sit well and not inclined to fall out. For my ears these are way more comfortable than the Samsung Pro's. I got sore ears very fast with the Samsung Pro's no matter which tips I used. These Sony's feel just right. The large bit hangs outside of your ears, nothing wrong with that, just seemed odd at first, but I think that's a big part of the comfort level, not squeezing it all inside your ears.
What I don't like -
They should be easier to get out of the case, not really hard but just takes a little more fiddling than it should. I'm sure I'll get used to that. I also don't like the rounded case as I want it to sit up with a flat base - it does sit upside down nicely, but that messes with my OCD :-)
I was nervous to buy these after my Samsung experience, but really happy I did. An excellent buy.
NOTE: Not sure if this was the case with other buyers here, but I received what seems to be the Chinese domestic version of this model. The Sony packaging and paperwork was in English and Chinese (see included picture). Additionally, the default language for the built-in voice was Mandarin Chinese. I was able to switch this to English within the Sony Headphones app after setup. Its not a big deal, actually I think its pretty cool, but I don't think this was indicated in the Amazon listing.
Pros:
- Pairs quickly and easy to setup. iOS is able to monitor and display battery level in battery widget.
- Active noise cancelling works amazingly. App allows for various EQ tweaks and noise cancelling settings.
- Only tested for a couple weeks, but battery life feels extremely superior to my old Airpods.
- Full set of foam and rubber in-ear pieces included for various ear sizes.
- Sound quality is great out of the box, but I feel it can be improved with EQ tweaking in settings. Being in-ear, they definitely offer a more isolated and richer sound from original Airpods, which sound more open and natural.
- I primarily use wireless headphones for running. These units are larger and heavier than Airpods, but not so big that they fall out after some moderate running and jumping.
Cons:
- Requires the Sony "Headphones" app to pair and manage functionality and settings. (Slight inconvenience over Airpods, which can be monitored and managed within iOS with no extra software).
- Firmware was outdated out of the box. The Headphones app pestered my with software update notifications. Headphones need to connected, but NOT placed in the case during a software update.
- I noticed somewhat frequent skipping during music playback. There is an option in the app to prioritize stable connection over sound quality, but this does not seem to help much.
- Sometimes one unit will suddenly turn off while the other stay connected, even though both units are near my iPhone and sufficiently charged. The only fix I found is turning Bluetooth off and back on and then manually reconnecting via iOS Bluetooth settings.
- Case is gorgeous, but much bulkier than that of Airpods. Its not comfortable to keep in smaller pockets or tighter pants.
Overall:
Great battery life and active noise cancelling make these a great alternative to Airpods that offer more features and customizability. These Sony units, however, still do not completely escape the typical problems with true wireless headphones, and they are less convenient than Airpods in a few ways:
Skipping and connectivity issues can still persist.
Compared to Airpods' design, they are bulkier, heavier, and have an in-ear form factor. The case is quite unwieldy.
Compared to Airpods' sound quality, they sound more isolated and rich, but need to be tweaked about with EQ settings to get the best sound.
Honestly if Apple Airpods were more affordable or had user-replaceable batteries, I would still chose them over other options, including this Sony set. For an iPhone user, nothing can beat Airpods' simplicity with iOS, and for me personally, they have perfect fit in my ear. But if I had to pick something else, these Sony headphones offer a good alternative, just not a real replacement.

First pair arrived with a dying right earbud (power light flickered when in charging case) and wouldn't pair.
Returned and the second one appeared to work. It paired with my iPhone quickly using their Headphone app. Sound quality is pretty good but by the end of the day I found this pair was also defective.
This pair appears to have a faulty left ear bud. The touch sensor is unresponsive making it impossible to enable pairing mode for other devices. This also prevents you from resetting or re-initializing the ear buds. Additionally the battery drops from 100% battery to 70% after a few minutes.
Aside from QC issues, Noise cancellation is okay but does not appear to be as good as first gen Air Pod Pros. Charging case is unpleasantly large to carry in a pants pocket.
Top reviews from other countries
While I was searching for new headphones, this and the AirPod pros were the two contenders. The way I made me decision was quite simple.
Are you more a convenience type person, or a sound type person?
The air pods obliterate these in terms of convenience (if you own an apple phone that is), as the syncing, turning on, everything about the eco system made it super easy and practical for day to day use. However, the Sony headphones obliterate the AirPods in sound, especially in bass and noise canceling.
By no means are AirPods bad at noise cancelling, or the Sony headphones aren’t practical, but these are their respective strengths in my opinion. I made my choice because I wanted rich sound, and I got rich sound.
