A decent and comfortable fitness Smart Watch. OK battery life.

A decent and comfortable fitness Smart Watch. OK battery life.
The company that owns Fossil (and many other watch brands) has gone all in with their support for Google's WearOS smart watch operating system. They are now several generations into WearOS support. This is a gen 4 watch. There are some gen 5 watches, which aren't appreciably different. Wear OS has evolved moderately over the history of smart watches.Whereas when Apple and Google announced their competing watch OSes, they were both somewhat clumsy and left much room for improvement, at this point Apples watch OS has assuredly taken the lead in terms of ergonomics and presentation. The Google Wear OS, by contrast, has improved somewhat from the early days, but still feels a bit clunky, clumsy and slow. That acknowledged, it does work well within the Android ecosystem, and if you own an Android watch, your only viable options are WearOS or the Samsung Tizen OS. I own multiple watches running both WearOS and Tizen, and in my opinion, neither is clearly the winner in this contest--they're both OK and both inferior to the Apple OS. But the Apple watches don't work with Android. That said, Samsung has a history of abandoning their software products (OS products), while Google has so far a decent history of supporting and updating WearOS. Of course, we can't be sure what the future holds, especially now that Google has purchased Fitbit.Alrighty...preamble done...So how about this specific watch? Well, it runs the latest version of WearOS--with all the positives and negatives of that. Like all the Fossil smart watches, it has three controls on the body: The crystal button and two additional (programmable) buttons. It comes with a modest assortment of watch faces (see attached photos), most of which are available with all the Fossil watches. Setup is straightforward: Turn on the watch, install the WearOS app on your phone, and answer a small number of questions. It takes about 5 minutes. Once that's done, you'll be up and running. This watch has a silicone band which I find more comfortable than many silicone watch batteries. The watch itself is not that large--mid-sized. Many of the Fossil watches are very large (think Rollex sized), which IMHO is a bit obtrusive. I very much like the smaller size of this one. There's a heart rate monitor built into the watch, and it automatically connects to the Google Fitness Tracker apps. You can download other 3rd party fitness apps if you want.A nice feature of this watch is that it has GPS built-in. That means you can use the GPS function even if you're not with your phone (e.g. if you're running). It does not have sim card capability, though, so you'll need to download map info at home before you leave if you plan to use mapping. It has a micrphone (and can be activated by OK Google if you turn that on), but no speaker. It also has NFC, so you can use it for Google Pay if you use that.Battery life is just so-so, which is par for the course for these WearOS watches. You can get a full workday out of one charge, but you will DEFINITELY need to recharge every night. No matter what they claim in the PR, that's the reality. I'm OK with that. It uses a proprietary charging disk that attaches to the back of the watch magnetically (see photo). It works fine, but it's a bit annoying because if lose it or if you want two charges (e.g. one at home and one in your travel case), you'll need to pay 20-30 bucks for one. Such is life.On the whole, I'd say this watch is as good as any other recent watch running WearOS in terms of functionality and battery life, but more comfortable and less obtrusively large. (This is sold as a men's watch, but I could imagine many women would be fine with it as well). The hear rate monitor, GPS and NFC on this watch are a bit of icing on the cake.Fossil has recently dropped the sell-through price on this watch at many outlets, and if you can get it at the new reduced price, this is an attractive purchase if you're looking for a sports smartwatch.
