Hoya Variable ND Filter

Hoya Variable Neutral Density Filter

Vary the Amount of Light with Just One Filter

The HOYA Variable Neutral Density filter can take the place of a range of graded ND filters which saves money by only needing to buy one filter and saves time on location or on set by not needing to change filters constantly to change the effect, just turn the ring to get the effect you want.

The HOYA Variable Neutral Density filter puts you in control.

Why use a Variable Density Filter?

When using a camera in its fully manual mode the exposure time and aperture size can be adjusted.

Adding a variable density filter adds control of the amount of light entering the lens which enables increased exposure times and/or apertures while using the neutral density filter to prevent overexposure.

Without Filter

The HOYA Variable Neutral Density filter provides a convenient way to maintain exposure control by being able to vary the amount of light entering the camera by 1.5 to 9 stops (0.45 to 2.7 density for Cine use).

With Filter

This control allows for many special effects such as being able to control depth of field by using a wider aperture or create or control motion blur by being able to choose just the right slower shutter speeds for perfect blurring.

Product Description

This filter makes easy to adjust the brightness of a scene and have more control over the exposure settings of your camera, for both still photography and video use. The filter reduces light transmittance between approximately 1/3 and 1/400th of its original level, by rotating the inner filter ring. This allows a much greater range of shutter speed and aperture values to be set according to the desired effect. For example a long shutter speed can be used to blur water or crowds of people, even in full sunlight. The practical exposure range and light transmittance will vary depending on the situation.

NOT for wide-angle

NOT for wide-angle
All variable ND filters create an x-pattern at full darkness; this you can find all over the Internet, and on the accompanying caution sheet Hoya includes. But what you may not learn so easily is that this tendency is exacerbated by wide-angle lenses. If, like me, you want an ND filter for landscapes, well, I hope you are content to shoot your landscapes at telephoto ranges because this just won't cut it at anything wide.I've uploaded some pix to clarify, though you'll see right off I didn't put much time into making them as good as a magazine review. Sorry. Shooting with a Canon 5D3 and a 24-105 zoom, I found the filter very effective at telephoto lengths. The one I've posted above, at 93mm, is pretty good. I didn't have a nice uniform object to shoot and the clouds confuse the issue, but overall it's a pretty good shot at about 8 stops down from the very lightest area of the filter. That's what Hoya promises, and it delivers. But at the other end of the range, at 24mm, the problems began. I uploaded an extreme example just to show you how bad it can get--of course, no one expects a variable filter to be useable at full darkening; that's just not the technology. But you can see where the darkening tends to be, and maybe that'll help you find it in the other shots. I can't tell you where on the zoom the problems began, but I'd guess 40mm would be pretty safe. I'm shooting with a full-frame camera, BTW. At 24mm, I could get maybe 5 or 6 stops of darkening that were useable. Maybe. The real problem began when I switched to a 17-40mm lens. 24mm on that lens was much worse; a significant X-pattern. Even at 40mm there was some darkening but at 17mm, wow. Useless. At that same area of 5-6 stops, the darkening was significant. To go any farther was pointless. As is, for me, owning this lens. It's going back today. This was my first variable ND filter, so I can't say whether it's any worse or better than the competition. My main complaint is that it's not useable for the wide-angle landscapes I shoot, and I can't say if any others would be better or worse. Oh yeah--another minor issue is that the Canon lens cover won't fit over this filter like it will over a B+W or other filter. Again, I can't say if others will be better. . .though come to think of it, that's not a problem with my B+W polarizer.I'd like to add that the seller, Gigabargain, was super about this return. No questions asked, full refund. And the shipping was fast, too; I suspect they'll always be faster to the West Coast than the big New York stores. I highly recommend them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Mid-Budget variable ND filter.
Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2018
Holds great on my sony a6000. I bought the 52mm which is the smallest and I am using it with both my 40.5 kit lens and a 49mm lens (downsize ring bought separately). This is my first filter and did not know exactly what to expect, so far so good as it does the job specially for video recording. Aberrations? Well, it is on the manual included but not a problem. Color issues? Not noticeable, not a pro and doing basic color correction but always check your WB just in case.
