Ho colto l’occasione sfruttando una bella offerta su Amazon ed alla fine ho deciso di acquistarlo e non potrei esserne più soddisfatto.
Ammetto che inizialmente ho fatto fatica: si tratta di una lente che ha una certa curva di apprendimento e bisogna conoscerla per usarla adeguatamente. Con mio iniziale disappunto ho scoperto che un 85 millimetri, a f1.8, mettendo a fuoco a due metri di distanza ha una profondità di campo di soli 4 centimetri! Questo significa che mettendo a fuoco l’occhio, l’orecchio sarà fuori fuoco… allo stesso modo fotografare una persona inclinata di profilo farà si che un occhio sia a fuoco e l’altro no.
A tre metri di distanza si arriva ad 8 centimetri, che sono comunque pochi. Non me ne ero mai accorto perché usando il 50 millimetri il problema si presenta meno: a tre metri di distanza la profondità di campo è di 24 centimetri.
Le prime foto che ho fatto quindi mi avevano un po’ deluso ma con un paio di giorni di uso ho capito come usarlo. Basta chiudere un po’ e aumentare la distanza e si possono ottenere risultati eccellenti. Inizialmente però può essere difficile per chi come me non è un professionista. In compenso è una lente con cui si impara parecchio.
Da un punto di vista costruttivo la lente è molto ben fatta. Il corpo è essenzialmente in metallo, così come la baionetta. È una lente compatta, soprattutto se paragonata ad uno zoom, e la lunghezza esterna non cambia durante la messa a fuoco. Per essere una lente dalla grande apertura, direi che è addirittura piccola.
Peccato che nella confezione manchi il paraluce che è da acquistare a parte.
È dotata di un motore USM che permette una impressionante velocità e precisione della messa a fuoco. Sulla mia 6D non perde un colpo, anche nell’inseguimento. Nessun problema anche in condizioni di luce scarsa, non tentenna mai. Rispetto al 50 f1.8 è un altro pianeta, in termini di velocità, di affidabilità ed anche di rumorosità. Sul corpo dell’obbiettivo è presente la classica finestrella con la distanza di messa a fuoco.
L’anello di messa a fuoco, ovviamente gommato, funziona in modo abbastanza fluido ed anche la messa a fuoco manuale è abbastanza agevole e funziona anche in modalità AF.
Monta filtri da 58 millimetri, che sono anche abbastanza economici.
Otticamente è una lente davvero impressionante: la nitidezza al centro del fotogramma è davvero eccellente già a tutta apertura e migliora ancora chiudendo. A f2.8 è ancora più inciso, tanto che mia moglie, quando ha visto le prime foto che le ho scattato mi ha imposto di non usarlo più per fotografarla, visto che ingrandendo la foto si possono contare tutte le imperfezioni della pelle…
La nitidezza ai bordi non è alla stessa altezza, in particolare alle aperture maggior, ma per il tipo di utilizzo che ne faccio io (ritratti) è assolutamente ininfluente.
La cosa che più mi è piaciuta è la qualità dello sfocato: un bokeh morbido, cremoso e uniforme, assolutamente piacevole da vedere e che aiuta a conferire tridimensionalità alle foto. In assoluto è lo sfumato migliore che mi sia capitato di vedere ed è assolutamente naturale. E si tratta di una di quelle caratteristiche che con tutta la buona volontà non possono essere ricreate attraverso i software. Per quanto molti programmi, ed oggi anche alcuni smartphone, permettano di simulare lo sfocato, l’effetto che si ottiene con una lente di questo livello è irraggiungibile.
A parte alla massima apertura, condizione in cui si perde un minimo di contrasto e colore, i colori sono molto belli e naturali e le foto sono davvero spettacolari.
Come ci si aspetterebbe per queste focali, non ci sono evidenti distorsioni da correggere.
Quello che invece può essere un problema in alcune condizioni è il color fringing: in particolare alle maggiori aperture gli aloni viola e verdi sono abbastanza evidenti e devo dire che sono anche piuttosto resistenti ai trattamenti di eliminazione: Lighroom aiuta a ridurli ma nelle condizioni peggiori non vengono rimossi del tutto. La situazione ovviamente cambia chiudendo il diaframma, ed a 2.8 il problema tende a scomparire, ma ci sono davvero condizioni in cui ci si deve convivere.
C’è anche una vignettatura abbastanza evidente, soprattutto a f1.8, che tende a scomparire già a f 2.8. questa però per fortuna è facilmente correggibile in post-produzione, sempre ammesso che la si voglia correggere visto che in alcuni casi è addirittura piacevole.
Compressivamente è una delle lenti che mi diverte di più usare e che mi restituisce i migliori risultati. Usata in inerni permette di gestire anche condizioni di scarsa illuminazione, anche se come detto bisogna fare i conti con la profondità di campo. Usata in esterni permette foto veramente tridimensionali, con uno sfocato e uno stacco dal fondo veramente eccellenti.
Visto il prezzo direi che si tratta di una di quelle lenti che non possono mancare nel corredo di un appassionato. Secondo me una delle più riuscite di Canon, come dimostra il fatto che sia un progetto mai cambiato nonostante o tanti anni sulle spalle.
