PSB (sister company of NAD) Hits Home Run with Dolby-enabled Atmos Speakers
5 Stars
PSB (sister company of NAD) Hits Home Run with Dolby-enabled Atmos Speakers
Playing "Blade Runner 2049" and "Oblivion" and "Hunter Killer" and "Ready Player One" in 4k/Dolby Atmos has been a thrill with these PSB Imagine XA speakers! They fit perfectly atop my Definitive Technology speakers in a 5.1.4 setup (the "4" being the number of PSB Imagine XA Dolby-enabled speakers). I hope this review will provide helpful details about why I rate these speakers so highly. Enjoy! Here is my system setup: The Imagine XA speakers receive amplified Dolby-enabled low-level signals from my NAD T758 v3i "Height 1 and Height 2" line-outs which are passed to my 20+ year old NAD 906 Multi Channel Amplifier which, not surprisingly, has exceptional specs and performance standing ramrod straight and tall next its younger sibling in the NAD T758 v3i. My TV is the LG OLED55CXPUA CX 55" 4k (2020) fed by a Sony UBP-X1100ES 4K/UHD Blu-ray player. Before I dedicated the Imagine XAs to Atmos duty, I played full-range music through them for a couple days and came away from that break-in period convinced the Imagine XAs would make decent direct-fire speakers in any configuration. When put in place for Atmos-duties, I put them on top of my main front speakers and rear surround speakers which are Definitive Technology all 'round: three C/L/R 2002 speakers for the fronts (all vertically oriented), and two Studio Monitor 45 speakers for the rear surrounds. For low frequency duties, I have a Sunfire HRS12, apparently the last sub designed by Bob Carver himself. The XA speakers' drivers are about 55-inches from the floor in a room with an 8-foot high, flat, smooth ceiling. The 55-inch height is attributed to the height of my MainL/MainR/RearSurrR/RearSurrL speakers' heights, a preference on my part because I like all my direct-firing speakers' central radiating point (i.e. just below the tweeter) to be about 8-inches higher than ear level. This does not bother me, for the speakers' radiation pattern is sufficient for the role. Plus, I like the psychoacoustic sensation that the sound is in the upper half of the room... I really don't like standing up and my head suddenly finding itself "above" the sound. My center channel, while also vertical, is tilted upward slightly at the front edge to achieve a dead-on focus at head-level at the main seating position. Now, after all this, I want to mention that each of the Imagine XAs is at the same height relative to the floor and ceiling. This uniformity of height was essential, in my mind, even with room correction. However, with a decent room correction system, such as the Dirac Live application I mention below, inconsistencies in uniformity would likely not create a make-or-break situation. Finally, concerning uniform height for the XA speakers, I was able to achieve that uniformity of height by using two different height speaker stands. The speaker stands are actually art stands from Xylem Design: 11.5"sq top, 30"h for the C/L/R 2002 left and right speakers, and 11.5"sq top, 40"h for the Studio Monitor 45 surround back speakers. The stands are adhered together with GOOP/E6000 where the top mates to the uprights. This makes them quite sturdy. By the way, the stands are also sitting on marble slabs (read: 12" circular, marble cheese boards) with spikes on the bottom of the slabs so each "speaker stand, marble base assembly" is coupled directly with the hard floor under the carpet. All told, not only are the XA speakers at the same height, but the direct-radiating Studio Monitor 45 surround speakers are at the same height as the upper half of the main left and right C/L/R 2002 front speakers. Perfect!Final preparations were tackled by using the microphone supplied with my NAD T758 v3i and the full, consumer version of Dirac Live purchased online (the NAD only comes with the "lite" version of Dirac which ably handles frequencies up to 500Hz). When measured and presented with the NAD target curves in Dirac Live on my laptop, I chose to create a +6db shelf from 400Hz to 20KHz for the front/center speaker. For all other speakers, I left them as the NAD target curve preferred, which seemed to be a slightly downward slope across practically the entire spectrum which ultimately tamed the highest frequencies by 1-2db on each remaining speaker. How did it sound? In a word: heavenly! But not because it is gimmicky. Rather, it should - and did! - sound less forced and less complicated, with sounds having a life of their own, be they subtle or aggressive. To see what I mean, fire up "Blade Runner 2049" and listen to the rain and city noises when Joi and "K" are enjoying her first encounter with rain. Also, in "Oblivion" listen for Jack's/Tech 49's voice through the speakers in Vika's tower perch as Jack talks with her via radio. His voice should sound like it is not in the same airspace as the direct-firing speakers in your room, and that is because the sound is supposed to sound like it is coming from above you... you know, like in that very control room! And that is the magic of the Dolby-enabled speakers: the sound is projected directly at the ceiling by a separate speaker that accurately replicates some of the direct and reflected sounds that come from above.Another great way to test these XA marvels is with the "Dolby Atmos - Horizon" demo. On that demo, if you listen for the entrance the drums make into the soundtrack when the yellow Corvette is seen from above, then you will understand the uniqueness of that drum-sound projection and how complementary to the visual experience it actually is when NOT having those drums mixed in with the companion, direct-radiating sound source of the car. For another fun test of Dolby Atmos, get the "Audiosphere" demo. The high-frequency tinkling sounds should sound like they are above your head or even a bit toward the front even though they are actually coming from the XA speakers behind you. Also, the Dolby Atmos demo "Silent" is really fun, and when the girl gets the wink from her film-entrapped dad to "press the button" the swirling, whooshing sounds from the XA speakers lend a believable sense of space to the direct sound that is very rich and smooth! Now, the unique and discrete nature of differing sounds is certainly recreated by more channels, but here with the XAs and Atmos the extra channels also make use of time/distance/reflection to create an environment that feels bigger than the room you are in. The sensation of standing up and finding yourself in the middle of an "ambience cloud" is really quite fun, and such rich ambient sounds - especially if reflected off the ceiling properly - will thrill singular or group movie viewers alike! Configured well and using high quality speakers, such as the PSB Imagine XA speakers, you will find your home theater masterfully envelopes you in a wealth of sound without being too conspicuous or seeming to try too hard (read: overcompensating with the subwoofer "wow-factor" that pushes your shoulders up above your ears). And, if you have not been a fan of sitting through movie credits, once you get these XA speakers dialed-in, you will want to not just listen through to the end of movie credits, you will forbid talking while they roll. For instance, as the last scene fades to black and the credits start to roll at the end of "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay (Part 2)" you should find yourself pinned to Jennifer Lawrence's voice solidly front and center as her song drifts from that universe to yours, her voice wrapped in subtle but sylvan, angelic musical and choral cues coming from all other speakers... and all supported masterfully by the XAs. It is simply magical. Finally, let me mention a few practical items: 1) I recommend straight, slim barrel banana plugs that you would insert into the hole where stripped cable would be inserted and cinched down, as the hold is pretty tight and the angle is entirely usable (Note: I used KabelDirekt slim barrel, straight plugs and silicone jackets I scavenged from some unused right-angle plugs), 2) using right-angle plugs or trying to use the bored-out holes in the top of the binding post bolts (after you remove the red and black caps) will likely not yield satisfactory results, 3) be willing to put in some time to get the speaker levels and frequencies dialed-in, 4) the build quality of the Imagine XA speakers is superb, 5) the wall mounts - which I actually experimented with - while solid and useful for wall mount positioning, nonetheless did not yield sound comparable to what I experienced when they were simply placed on top of my regular speakers, seemingly because the Dolby-enabled speakers were not on the same line of radiation as my regular speakers, 6) DTS-X sounds great with these, too.My Future Upgrade Plan: Make use of the receiver's unused amplified channels 6 and 7 to implement a Dolby Labs recommended 7.1.4 configuration by adding two Xylem 40" stands to hold a pair of "new-but-sitting-in-box-for-several-years" Definitive Technology Studio Monitor 55 speakers to the left and right (and just a bit forward of) the couch.
