I first bought a Play 1, which is essentially the gateway drug of Sonos products. Once you get a taste of how great it sounds, how easy it is to use and set up, you feel like something is missing. How about stereo? Isn't two better than one? Without hesitation I bought a second one, and it surpassed my expectations. Then I saw the Playbar at Best Buy and again, I couldn't contain myself - 5 speaker surround sound??? There went $700. But still, something was missing... I needed more bass. I admit, I made the wrong decision. Rather than spend $700 on the sub I figured I could solve the bass problem with 2 play 5's as my satellite speakers (and I moved the play 1' to my girlfriends house).Do not make the mistake I did. If I could do it over again here's what I would do: Buy the playbar, next the sub, then finally add the play 1's as satellite speakers. Why? Without getting technical, the playbar isn't made to handle much bass, so when the playbar is trying to produce the entire range of sound the highs get muddled when trying to produce lows. When you add the sub, all the speakers work together to produce deep lows and crisp highs - you'll hear sound definition so real you'll think you're there. Dialogue becomes crystal clear as well. I also would say it broadens the sound field effect you get from the playbar as well.Bottom line, the sonos sub and playbar are a match made in heaven. Buy the sub before investing in other speakers.

If you’re reading this, it’s because you’ve fallen in love with Sonos and need more…

Is the price worth it? Yes and no and absolutely.

I was on the fence and went to the box store to listen to the demo setup and was admittedly disappointed. Had the price been half, it would have been a no brainer and I would have bought it. However, I simple couldn’t justify the cost versus bass increase. In the store, the bass was noticeable but not take my breath away awesome, at least for the cost.

Countless YouTube video reviews later, my mind continued to bicker with itself always choking over the cost.

As I’ve experienced with Sonos in the past, they sound much different in a box store versus my living room. I love my Sonos but was always left wanting more bottom end.

I decided to give it a try, worse case I could return it though I somehow knew I was going to love it. I bought an Amazon Prime used one. It was in near perfect condition except for a scratch on the back, but the savings more than justified the damage which was better than any sale price I've seen. It's was going behind my sofa anyway.

The setup is simple as it always is with Sonos. Originally, I paired it with my Sonos Beam and 2 Play 1’s. What you should know is the Sub will reduce the bass output of the other speakers and increase mid-range since the Sub is now responsible for the bass, not a big deal for a single room setup but in my case my surrounds are located in the kitchen and dining room (and tuned with Trueplay). I opted to 'group' my Sonos Beam and Play 1 Surrounds together and 'group' the Sub and my original Play 3's together (which are in the TV cabinet with the Sonos Beam) so they all play together. This kept the bass higher on the remote surround Play 1's (better for music) when in the kitchen and dining. Not an ideal setup but it works for me, the added bonus the 3's giving some extra kick and separation to the Beam.

At first I wasn’t dazzled by the bass output so I bumped the sub to it’s maximum +3 boost level. It boomed but didn’t rattle my chest like my Klipsch 12" sub in the basement home-theater, but it was still a big and welcome improvement. After the novelty past and I listening for a bit, I realized the sub was overpowering so I set it realistically, to compliment the other speakers rather than overpower them.

Once I did that, the result was a joyful experience. There was a noticeable richness to the sound that lacked from my original setup and the ultra-lows resounded to my great satisfaction without being intrusive. As I continued to listen (volume in the middle between ¼ and ½ ) I really began to appreciate the Sonos Sub and became immersed in the newfound experience.

Certain music like classical didn't utilize the Sub much. Then others it would politely, and assertively, add bass that would leave me smiling. For trance, EDM or dance it was adequate but not a night club thump, nor should it be lest my neighbors two houses away complain.

So yes, the Sonos is a great addition to your listening experience for both movies and music. You will really appreciate it for movies. It has truly enriched my Sonos experience so it is a big yes for me once I got over the sticker shock. Is it worth the price? It is a big chunk of money. However, now that I’ve had it, It’d be hard to part with it; I can see that price could very well make it a ‘No’ from that sense. Did it completely change my Sonos listening experience…absolutely!

**Update: I've had this woofer now for over a year and I would say this is life changing for the Sonos experience. I fall in love with it each and every day watching TV or listening to music. It is just so amazing **

Hope you found my experience helpful and happy listening.

    Cheers.
