Reimagine the way you create
Surface Dial was designed to transform the way you create. It optimizes your workflow by bringing your most used tools directly onto your digital workspace. Store, customize, access, navigate, and reimagine physical tools in the digital world—from concept to creation. Surface Dial helps you focus on your work instead of spending time on keyboard shortcuts, switching between screens, and moving back-and-forth between palette and canvas.
Tools and shortcuts for your creative process
Surface Dial provides the tools and shortcuts to make the creative process more productive and enjoyable. Just press and hold to display a radial menu of tools, making it easier and faster to do the things you love in applications like Adobe Creative Cloud, Mental Canvas Player, Bluebeam Revu, MohoTM12, Sketchable, StaffPad, and more. Now you can undo each individual line of a drawing step-by-step, change pencil color or brush size, scrub through video content, rotate 3D vectors or manipulate parameters, all in a single turn. It’s the simplest, most intuitive way to unlock your creativity.
Dial in your creativity and control
Your creative experience is even further enhanced when Surface Dial is used on-screen with Surface Studio. Place your Dial directly on the screen and watch as a color picker or a ruler appears on your digital drafting table. Tools change when you switch across integrated apps and haptic feedback gives you greater control by providing helpful vibrations into your fingertips. Use Surface Dial in your non-dominant hand while keeping your dominant hand for drawing, creating new vectors, making animations, and more. Everything has been engineered to help you stay totally in touch with your work.
Dynamic tools make daily tasks efficient and fun
With Surface Dial, even the little things feel more fun. Adjust the volume on your Spotify tracks, scroll through articles on your favorite news websites without touching your keyboard or mouse. Fly through your local city in Windows Maps, zooming in and out while panning across the touchscreen with your fingers. Every task is more enjoyable and efficient.

A variety of those keyboards have been Microsoft, the majority of those mice have been Logitech Anywhere models, and I had an obsession with this device since I first saw it.
I love it. LOVE.
I'm using it with a Surface Pro 2017 as a scroll device. The device itself is so well built and textured/dial weighted. It feels like you're working with a physical device as you scroll down a list or use it for other purposes, it feels like you're interacting with the computer on a deeper, more physical level. It adds enjoyment to using the tablet!
Unboxing was easy, pairing was simple, the metal texture keeps a natural coolness from the ambient temperature and I couldn't enjoy that more. The bottom is slightly sticky (not magnetic as I had assumed? Or if so, in addition).
I know the original applications for this have originally been in graphic and design, I can also imagine amazing uses for music leveling and layer/design, gaming... you name it.
I hesitated on purchasing this because I viewed the device as "optional". If I could replace my mouse with it, I would. And with the stylus on Surface Pro, I probably could. Looking forward to many more miles & dials with this new friend. :)
And the bonus was my Navy Seal sticker fit the top perfectly.

And the bonus was my Navy Seal sticker fit the top perfectly.
Perfect size
Easy connectivity (works out of the box)
Wireless (Bluetooth)
Long battery life
Nice set of built in tools (scroll, undo, volume, etc.)
Intuitive mode selector (push and hold)
1 Extra semi-programmable tool
Cons:
Only 1 extra custom tool
Currently maximum of 6 tools
Low 3rd party app support (ex. track skipping on Spotify)
On rare occasion is unresponsive (almost like it goes to sleep)
Overall:
Great peripheral for productivity, it'll only keep getting better. It's almost perfect, but unfortunately it can't be used to its potential since it's still in a stage of early adoption. A huge flaw is the maximum of 6 functions (weird because the function selection menu isn't even full with 6) and the single programmable function. I get enough use out of the default tools to easily justify the purchase, but it's a huge letdown to only have 1 custom mode, especially considering the low 3rd party support.
- Feels great to use, smooth control
- Amazing battery life (the reason for this is also a negative see below)
- Decently Customizable
- Well built
Bad:
- Goes to sleep and disconnects after a few minutes of inactivity. This helps on battery life buts drives me nuts because for many work flows I have to wake the thing back up every time I need it. I wish this sleep time was customizable but it is not. This unfortunately renders it very frustrating to use in real work so I've reverted to using a customized trackball instead. Real shame as its a great device otherwise and would be fixable with one setting.
Also, its a really fun alternative to using the mouse when adjusting sliders in Lightroom!

While on the call i use this as a tool to manage the sound ( though there are shortcuts on the keyboard itself , but when you are lying back and just want to have some thing handy )
While displaying or working this is good to zoom , scroll and any other shortcut that you may want . This takes some time to adapt , but once you will use it for 3-4 days , then you will get used to it .
Visual Studio Code: Press to show Intellisense, turn to scroll through Intellisense and code.
HitFilm Pro: Turn to scrub through the timeline, press to play/pause.
Minecraft: Turn to switch views, press to toggle HUD.
