But imagine my surprise to find that these are in fact NOT new hard drives. 2 of them are used. I know this because one of them fails to load claiming it has a corrupt operating system on it. The other one was partitioned in half, with a system reserved partition of 50 mb. I can't format it because this appears to also have a part of the operating system on it, and requires a low-level format option.
It's understood that I took a risk waiting THAT long to even check them. That's on me. But to find that "new" drives are actually used? That's on Amazon.
Update: I reached out to Seagate directly and tried to get a utility to at least perform a zero-fill on the one used drive that still worked. They pointed me to their instructions on how safely to do that - and then asked if I just wanted to exchange the drives for new ones even though these were out of warranty (expired Feb 2020). They extended the warranty until September for me, and I can return all 3 for brand new drives! Thank you Seagate! Incredible customer service!
Back in the mid 2000's I did send a smaller drive back to Seagate for warranty service, which was slow and painful--but what warranty claim isn't? I did get a refurbished drive in return, which continued to work until I replaced it with a larger drive years later.
These are great drives for the price and I'd put them in a raid array any time.

We have numerous drives ran about the various machines here, and a good number of them would be this model and fall within the 4-8TB range. Used for everything from general storage to working on video and more.

I wish I could have afforded the 6TB drive but this 4TB drive seems to be the best range price wise vs storage capacity right now.
Seagate has been around for a long time, they must know what they are doing. This drive is standard size but it is still a bit more sleek than my older drives.
To heft it, it seems like a solid piece of newer technology...
I had to go into my Windows 10 disk manager and allocate the default space it found, then it quick formatted in seconds to NTFS and it has had a constantly level data flow of over a TB to it with no problems at all. I'm sure the 256 mb cache helps a lot in that respect.
I am very happy with this purchase!

Speeds are good for a mechanical drive. You get a big burst speed writing to it then it will slow down. So really large files definitely take longer than an SSD but for say 5GB transfers it’s fairly negligible due to buffer. On larger files it will slow from burst speeds of 300-400MB/s down to 170MB/s or so. Slower if lots of smaller files. Obviously a huge difference from 550MB/s of a good SSD drive or 1400MB/s of a good NVMe drive but this is after all just a storage drive.
Price is great, solid performance, nice and quiet. No complaints here! If it were for any kind of proper backup drive I’d go for WD reds or similar but just for storing movies, tv shows or as an extra backup for your tablets/laptops etc it does the job nicely.
