Pro:
-Huge game with at least 25 hours of gameplay, but easily more if you do all the side missions and tombs
-True AAA production with top notch graphics, voice acting, and sound.
-Unique difficulty settings to set exploration, puzzles, and combat separately.
Cons:
-Those expecting a lot of combat might like the Uncharted series better.
-Darker, almost horror oriented theme that some may not like, although I didn’t mind.
That's because they are not related. And that's a shame, because the graphics, voice acting and game play are all tight and engaging, in Shadow as in the previous two. I also think the game play mechanics were improved and better balanced in Shadow than previously.
What's missing here, in my opinion, is an unfolding story arc that spans all three games (relating the games to each other in a meaningful and emotionally impactful way). There's no Darth Vader-esque returning villain. Worse, except for flat (though well acted) character Jonah, Lara has no returning squad to bond with. Each game is a stand alone effort, and it's only called a trilogy because there just happen to be three games. Lara rises from young untested explorer to seasoned, shadow covered tomb raider in the first game - remember when she could not recognize herself in the mirror? That appears to be the whole basis of the trilogy, yet Lara accomplished that progression handily in the first game with it's three, pulse-pounding acts.
The first game, incidentally, could potentially have spawned a trilogy story arc (i.e., the ending was not McGuffin based, and could have easily created a returning, female villain).
Rise and Shadow, however, are each a new, stand alone adventure with a different magical McGuffin. The inclusion of the same, pseudo-comical, mostly inept, James Bond inspired "Specter" villainous organization does not count towards story progression across games due to the lack of returning characters. This renders everything a bit flat. I found myself unfortunately losing interest starting about 10% through Rise when I first detected an over-reliance on a McGuffin, and this apathetic interest level continued all through Shadow, at least for me.
And that's a shame. Because these games were lovingly crafted with absolutely exquisite attention to detail. They are fun and challenging. Unfortunately, due to the lack of an actual trilogy story arc, the games are not memorable and lack replay value.
The devs had superior voice actors and graphics capability, and they had the budget and resources to deliver a story-driven trilogy. But they didn't. And that makes me sad, due to opportunity lost.
