"What?", I said to myself, "Why would I pay $250 for this kind of hub when I can get this no-name for only $100?"
Guess what I end up doing? Paying $250 for this type of functionality.
Pro-tip: Kids, don't do what I did a get a cheap-o USB-C hub to do multiple monitors.
About the Mini DisplayPort connector: I have a decent HP VH240a 24" LED monitor that is the Primary Monitor to my MBP 16". Only does VGA and HDMI.
No problem, I thought, connecting to this hub. I will just get an HDMI to MDP adapter.
Nothing working. Everything else worked like a charm except the monitor. Weirdly enough, my macOS (Big Sur 11.4) extended my desktop to this "phantom" monitor but my monitor errored with inactive signal.
Saw a blog post about a similar incident and everything was fixed when they connected the monitor to Thunderbolt USB-C via HDMI adapter.
Voila! Magic. (I am typing this review on my connected monitor.)
I highly recommend this hub. I wouldn't use the MDP tho.
My old pc dock was not compatible with my 16" MacBook Pro (it used a usb-a connector and displayport drivers, neither of which played nicely with the Mac). My cheap usb-c dongles were made for Macs and didn't play nice with my PC's. Dongles and non-thunderbolt docks with multiple video ports did not support 2 unique extended displays on Mac (at best, they would support 2 cloned desktops).
I bought the OWC dock because it looked like it was backwards compatible with non-thunderbolt laptops. Unfortunately, this is not the case. I have an AMD-based pc that doesn't support Thunderbolt (which is an Intel technology). When connected, my laptop is able to detect the presence of the dock, but it does not register any of the devices attached to it (not even a mouse).
To be fair, the dock worked pretty well with my MacBook. However, the point of having a dock is so that I can set up a nice workstation that can be powered by any device that connects to it. Unfortunately, that isn't entirely the case here, and that is disappointing.
But the real blow came about 8 months or so into use, when it just stopped pushing two monitors. It could push to either thunderbolt 3 or to DVI but it wouldn't push to both. It was inconsistent in which one it chose to push for. restart after restart, it would push to the dvi, then to thunderbolt, then back to dvi. I replaced all my cables to see if the problem was somewhere there, but it didn't change anything. Around this time I also started seeing anomalies in screen performance, where certain apps would show blitzed-out screens from time to time. I even wrote to complain to some developers bug depts. before I realized it was likely the hub. I never experienced any of these issues when not connected to the hub.
I was under warranty, so I reached out to OWC support for help, thoroughly explained that I knew both monitors and all cables were working, and that the hub was just pushing one video signal at a time. After something like 10 or 12 days they finally responded—I know everyone is supposedly slammed because COVID and I can sympathize—but the response I did get was along the lines of, try making sure your hub is plugged in and replacing all your cables! Let us know if that works!
between trying to trouble shoot the issue myself, and waiting for tech support to finally respond, I'd been down to a single screen for weeks, first world problems I know, but it was quite a hit to my productivity. The condescending response from tech support was it for me. I replaced this hub with an Anker PowerExpand Elite, and voila. Both monitors sprang to life immediately. So far, the clamshell issues and glitchy app screen problems have also gone away, as has the scaling issues with running a vertical monitor.
I can't give this hub good marks. I just didn't have a good experience with it.

My only issue is with the Mac and MacOS Ventura. If I leave the system and it goes to sleep for an extended period of time, and then wake up the Mac, the display won't wake until I wake up the display with the monitor's power button. MacOS complains that I unplugged the drives without ejecting. And the drives remain disconnected, until I disconnect them and reconnect. There is no network connectivity via the dock's Gigabit network port until I disable/re-enable the Mac's WiFi (I guess that re-initializes the mac's network that it wakes up the dock's network port). I could unplug the dock from the Mac and re-plug then everything starts working again. I don't think this is a fault of the dock, as I had another dock (different brand, which this replaced) behave the same way after upgrading to MacOS Ventura 13.5.2.
The workaround was to configure MacOS to prevent the computer from sleeping by enabling "Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off", or eject all drives, and disconnect the dock prior to letting the computer sleep.
Other than apple's OS bugs, this is a solid product.
• 1 port mini DisplayPort
• 1 S / PDIF optique (j’aurais préféré coax). Attention : c’est une sortie seulement.
• 1 lecteur de carte SD
• 1 lecteur de microSD
• 1 USB 3.1 Gen 2
