My current favorite.
It is a very relaxing open world.
Work as hard as you like, or loaf about only doing the things you want to do.
I fish.
Go fishing. Sell your caught fish.
Harvest fruit from trees. Sell those.
Dig up clams on the beach. Sell those.
Catch a dragonfly. Sell it.
Buy nice things with that money to spruce up your house or neighborhood.
Buy or make your tools or household goods.
Buy clothes. Dress up from many, many options you can buy. Not my favorite. But others seem to really like it!
Make friends with the local characters. Be kind to them, befriend them. They respond and you learn things that helps you move up in this little world.
Place homes where you like. Make paths. Collect things. Catch butterfly’s and beetles. Donate them to the museum and get recognition with plaques on their habitat.
Swim in the ocean and dive for pearls.
Visit the coffee shop in the museum and have a hot cup. Your character will like it.
Do as you please. This open world is your oyster. It’s very nice.
Glad I bought it.
I’ll try to group different points/subjects, regarding the game, in paragraphs below since it might be long and to hopefully help read or skim through. Even with a lengthy review, there’s a lot more to it...especially since I’m still fairly new to it myself!
***MULTIPLAYERS*** This may be a long-winded paragraph but I feel like this is one of the most important things to know about this game. Normally, I’m that person that does a ton of research before buying pricey items but I guess since I had been so into Pocket Camp and was excited about getting New Horizons, I didn’t spend as much time researching it. I still would have purchased the game but the main issue I have with it--and my reason for giving only 4-stars-- is because you can have only ONE island PER CONSOLE. It’s a bit frustrating in our house and I could see this being even more disappointing for others (especially if they too didn’t know beforehand). Such as families with more than one kid wanting to play (we just have one child). For example, I was the first person to play the game and set up the island. I remembered seeing something about multiplayers so I later started to play with my daughter and looked up how to do so. We soon figured out that she could have a seperate profile and character but her character has to live on my island and share resources for collecting items and all. This means that certain functions, like naming the island and being in charge of certain things, won’t work for her. Also, we can play at the same time but this can potentially get frustrating since you have to take turns to do certain functions and requires switching back-and-forth between players to do the activity. The assigned leader can do things like sell or craft items, and the follower can only “stand” there and wait until they’re done. The follower can collect items at the same time as the leader but it won’t go into their inventory- instead it goes to a bin at a certain part of the island. They can go and get the items to add to their inventory but it requires going to that part of the island and toggling to become the leader to add the items. It all just makes things a little more time consuming, though it is still a bit fun to play together. For some people this may not even be an issue. For us, we have played Minecraft on Playstation together and assumed it would be set up like that-- you can play in one world at the same time but the screen is split which allows each player/character to go to different parts of the world, do different tasks and get different items...or even build something together. I personally would really like it if they would allow that to happen on Animal Crossing! Though, compared to Pocket Camp, it is cool to at least be on the same screen together instead of only being able to visit each other’s camps at seperate times.
TIME SPENT AND CHARACTER SETUP-
Note that this game is very time consuming! It goes by real-life time (at setup you’ll choose your time zone), so if it’s night time for you- it will be night time on your game. Being that it’s so time consuming, It may not be for everyone- understandably! It’s certainly getting me through this time, in real-life, with the pandemic going on and staying at home. You of course can stop playing at any point but to level-up and do different activities, it does take a good bit of time...and patience! While I did purchase this game for me, I occasionally let my 9 year old play and give her a certain amount of time to do so. She gets a bit impatient with it since there’s so many things to do and can take time to do so. Also, as mentioned above, she gets bummed that she can’t do certain functions since she was not the one that set-up the island. The set-up process is probably the longest. You start off with basically nothing and are to build up the island by collecting items and crafting. It can take a while to gather certain items. Also, you’re basically in tutorial mode for a long time (and likely throughout most levels). It takes a good bit of time listening/reading directions from the characters and learning the different buttons, how to move around and the various functions of items.
EXPENSES/EARNING: I'm about 8 days into New Horizons and so far I haven't come across any extra real-life expenses required, as Pocket Camp requires. Instead you earn/buy things by spending time playing the game doing various activities. You can also collect bells by selling items and finding bells in various locations.
NOOK PHONE: You get an in-game smartphone that tracks earnings, information, map, recipes...and allows you to call other characters/friends, etc. You get one right at the beginning/start-up process.
CRAFTING/BUYING ITEMS: There are different ways to obtain various items. There are DIY (do it yourself) recipes that you can earn, buy and receive from characters. They are cards that will list the materials that you will need to gather in order to craft the item. Then you will craft it at the “community” crafting table (or eventually make your own table). Unlike on Pocket Camp where you had to order something to be crafted (and sometimes wait up to days before it is ready), you get the item you craft right away. Though, sometimes when purchasing items you might have to wait for them. There are a few different ways to buy items. One way allows you to purchase, with bells, items like tools and get them instantly. Or you can order rotating items like clothing or furniture and get them in your mailbox the next day (in human real-life time). Also, as you advance in the game, other ways of purchasing become available- like vendors coming to the island to sell.
FORTUNE COOKIES- Unless they end up appearing on New Horizons at a later level than I’m at, so far there have been no signs of fortune cookies like those on Pocket Camp. There are prizes that come wrapped as a gift and floating through the sky on a balloon. You use a slingshot to pop the balloon and open your present. Sometimes it’s a material for crafting or a piece of furniture or clothing item. Those are fun! Plus, until April 12 they have a “Bunny Day” event that allows you to collect about 6 different types of eggs that are used to craft Bunny Day recipes (for furniture, outfits, housing materials, etc)
OVERALL: My only reason for not rating 5-stars is due to what I wrote above regarding issues with multiple players on one console. There are TONS more features to the game that I didn’t even cover. I love all the details of the game. As mentioned, I can only compare New Horizons to Pocket Camp but I personally love this one a lot more (though, I loved Pocket Camp too!). Be prepared to put a lot of time into it (especially to get your $ worth!) but if it’s your thing, it is worth it and a lot of fun.
