The ability to combine settings offers nearly unlimited creative control, and lets you compensate for tricky lighting.
Superior Auto mode
Use Superior Auto mode to shoot photos and movies with the ease of a compact digital camera. In this mode, the camera recognizes the current shooting environment then adjusts settings for optimal results. Superior Auto also includes Auto HDR and Hand-held Twilight modes, both of which employ image compositing technology to handle difficult lighting by recording multiple images at high speed then compositing them to produce the final photo.
Anti-Motion Blur mode
Corrects for subject movement to capture amazingly clean and sharp images in low light. The camera leverages the large, APS-C image sensor and captures six images in a fraction of a second. Combining the data from all six creates a single image that minimizes subject blur.
Hand-held Twilight Mode
Get cleaner and sharper nighttime pictures—beyond the capability of traditional cameras—without using flash or a tripod. The camera leverages the large, APS-C image sensor and captures six images in a fraction of a second. Combining the data from all six creates a single image of extraordinary detail and low noise.
Face Detection/Smile Shutter
Set the a5000 to recognize faces and smiles. Face Detection locates up to eight faces in a composition then adjusts exposure, white balance and other settings based on these faces. Smile Shutter — adjustable in three levels — automatically takes a shot when smiles in the scene are detected.
Creative Style
Tailor the look of photos and movies before shooting. Choose from one of seven settings — Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Sunset or Black & White — depending on the scene or your creative intent.
Speed Priority Continuous mode
Freeze fast-moving subjects by shooting at up to 4 fps. This is the ideal solution for photographing sports, children at play or other action.

As for the actually light capturing, so far so good for me. I like the speed in which it can focus and take pictures, and I like how you can set the modes to go from idiot to advanced. I'm not as impressed with the lens itself, but it does a decent job, though I've yet to find a way to manually control the focus (I guess that's not something people really want?). I'm eager to get a 50mm prime lens and maybe a 55-200 telephoto lens for more versatility. Low light performance isn't too bad, though I don't normally shoot in such a setting. I target nature shots and pictures of the kids, and I've already captured several winners with just the stock kit, and my kids do not sit still. I'm very happy with the overall package, and I look forward to growing with the camera.
Update:
Still happy after a few months of pictures. I added my first lens to my kit, the E55-210. It adds some weight, but it really gets you close to things further away. I've had no problems with the camera itself, and I am quite happy with this camera. I found sharing to my iPad via WiFi to be quite handy for sharing and showing your content, and for getting it to my cloud storage.

The actual product itself is awesome. Great colour and the quality of the photos it takes is awesome for such a small and compact camera.
I bought this camera for my elder sister who wanted to have a DSLR but as I'm using DSLR since last 5 years I know how difficult it is to carry them and if your purpose primarily isn't photography then you shouldn't buy a DSLR. What should you buy? THIS!! yes is small champ from Sony is no less than a DSLR though not a perfect DSLR but it's almost there. Though I couldn't get much hands-on with it but my 5 years of experience with DSLR helped to understand in little time what this could produce.
PROS :
1) SMALL, Compact can be put in ladies' bag or travelers bag easily.
2) APS-C sensor. Usually this sensor is put in entry-level and mid-level DSLRs and is bigger than any sensor in compact cameras. Bigger the sensor better is your image quality. Sensor is heart of your camera.
3) INTERCHANGEABLE-LENS - World's smallest lens- interchangeable camera. Gives you a lot of scope to give new dimensions to your shots. you can put a prime lens or a zoom lens or a telephoto lens like DSLRs (Huge plus point)
CONS : (These cons are actually in comparison with a DSLR, for whom this is their first camera, these are not cons per se)
1) No electronic view-finder - You have to look on the screen while taking a picture which could be little difficult in bright sunny conditions
2) Same manual and zoom switch.
3) Little slow
Who should buy?
1) Those who want to but a camera equivalent to DSLR but are on short of budget or want a compact camera which takes less space and easy to carry around.
2) Those who want to upgrade from Point&Shoot but don't want to buy a DSLR for any of the above reason.
Who shouldn't buy?
Those who have already used a DSLR for sometime. This is definitely not an upgrade in any manner.
