One of the standout features of the WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra is its impressive 12TB storage capacity. This ample space has allowed me to securely store all of my important files, media, and backups in one central location, providing both peace of mind and easy access to my data whenever I need it.
The performance of the My Cloud EX2 Ultra is also top-notch, with its high-speed processor and ample memory ensuring smooth, efficient operation. File transfers are quick and seamless, and I've experienced no lag or slowdowns when accessing my data, even when multiple users are connected to the device.
Setting up the WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra was a breeze, thanks to its user-friendly interface and step-by-step instructions. The device easily integrated into my existing network, and the intuitive dashboard made it simple to configure settings, manage users, and monitor the health of my NAS.
Another feature I appreciate is the device's remote access capabilities. With the My Cloud mobile app, I can access my files from anywhere, using my smartphone or tablet. This has proven incredibly convenient for both work and personal use, allowing me to stay connected to my data even when I'm on the go.
Over all it was an impressive faultless performance and we have now put a lot more large files on it than just the test movies.
As you can see we can also back up from house to office and in fact the EX2 Ultra NAS could even be at a third location.
We had in the office a fanless older atom machine running an accounting program that needed a larger disk. However we used the iSCSI function of the EX2 to instead load onto the atom another pseudo drive. We used the iSCSI initiator function in windows. This added drive that steals space from the JBOD drive in the EX2 Hard drive is most useful if you need another dedicated small pseudo drive on a small low powered machine that the machine formats itself. I must add that the speed of the pseudo drive was not impressive! But still it did the trick!
The third use is the WD Sync. I do not fully understand this and why WD loads some files from the computers you elect to sync in an appearent arbritrary fashion without permission when you set up Sync and how do you remove some of these files from Sync. Why not WD not add any and leave adding to the user? WD needs to add one coheseive spelled out non intuitive manual on using and controlling SYNC. Having said that it is important if you are attempting to use this feature to set Windows to continual back up. Appearently if you delete a file in the Sync sphere it gets deleted from all particitpating machines. I do not see how to remove files from this situation. Nevertheless Sync appearently lets me reference files on any computer in the net from my computer WITHOUT going onto the computer holding that file. For example instead of referenceing an accounting spread sheet on say Daniel-PC for data I reference a copy on my machine in documents BUT WD is keeping the copy of my machine up to date with the master original on Daniel-PC. Again a much better manual with everything and no gaps and no intuitive is needed for Sync.
In conclusion this is a great buy as long as WD continues the free web service and free use of the name "MyCloud". For comparison we later set up our own NAS at my house on a $150 Bee Box using NAS4Free and use the WinSCP publically available utility to span the net. This takes several hours to set up and is good but not as good as EX2. Recommended to everyone. Roe5685.
Turns out, the MyCloud is faster. For directory operations, the MyCloud is more than twice as fast as my ReadyNAS (4:28 to get the properties of 31,761 files in 2950 folders, 50.4GB overall, versus 10:21 for the ReadyNAS.) Copying a huge 592MB file from the MyCloud to my Windows 10 desktop was also faster (1:40.44 for the MyCloud, versus 1:49.13 for the ReadyNAS.) Both are excellent at streaming videos locally.
As for future expansion, it is easy to plug in either one or two more My Passport USB 3.0 external hard disks that show up as though another share within the My Cloud. External drives won't be mirrored like the My Cloud EX2 Ultra's internal drives. My ReadyNAS, on the other hand, is maxed out, unless I replace it with a current ReadyNAS. Note: The real limiting factor on expansion is likely to be the Gigabit Ethernet port on both devices. For that reason, I'll only add another My Cloud or My Passport when I need more storage, not in hopes of even more speed via striping.
As for size, the MyCloud is only half the size of the ReadyNAS (see attached photo.) It also costs only a quarter of what the original ReadyNAS price. The MyCloud runs a bit warmer (44-46 degrees Centrigrade, versus 36-39 for the ReadyNAS), but its fan is much quieter. Power usage is also much less on the MyCloud, typically 16 watts versus 49 for the ReadyNAS.
The MyCloud software is elegant and comprehensive, including free cloud backup of anything or everything on the MyCloud. Setting it up is easy and obvious, except that it didn't quite work for me initially. My installation failed to complete adding an initial user and password, which resulted in not having any dashboard once installed. That led to a lot of searching for a manual and other support, which I did eventually locate. However, even that was not enough to solve the problem, so I eventually had to request help from WD support, which they cheerfully provided that same day. As I expected, what was needed was to reset to factory, a task normally done from the missing dashboard. Fortunately, it turns out there is another way to reset to factory. The manual mentions the reset hole on the back of the MyCloud, but not how to use it. Other on-line documents had taught me about inserting a paper clip for five seconds to do a reset of accounts etc. without losing file data. But when that wasn't enough, I was talked through unplugging the MyCloud, inserting the paper clip in the reset hole and keeping it there for 45 seconds after plugging the MyCloud in again. That worked. We could then go to its local IP address as a URL, log in to a default account documented online, and suddenly I had a dashboard, suitable for adding users, setting passwords etc. Another online document explained how to map a Windows 10 drive to a MyCloud share, and that's all I've needed to do everything with it that the ReadyNAS can do.
I've just redone my Windows drive maps so everything that previously pointed to the ReadyNAS now points to the MyCloud instead, allowing me to retire the ReadyNAS.
My next step will be to install WD Sync, a free program to keep my MyCloud account online in sync with all the files on my MyCloud device, and also allow for easy secure off-site access to all my data.
In short, the MyCloud EX2 Ultra is a significant improvement over both older WD external drives I've owned before and the ReadyNAS NV+.
Update 3/31/16: Woke up to a scare this morning - my Windows 10 PC informing me my almost-new and higher-capacity SSD is nearly full, almost entirely due to a HUGE \.WDTemp directory. Windows cleanup found almost nothing to remove, leaving WD Sync as the likely space hog. I searched on-line and in WD documentation for any way to limit space used on my C:\ drive, and found no way to do so, but lots of similar user complaints. I eventually ended up deleting all files in that directory, and turned off as much of WD Sync as I think I can do without (particularly Apple Time Machine, as I don't have an Apple desktop.)
I still like the My Cloud EX2 Ultra, but can't believe WD would let its software absolutely fill my PC hard disk with no way to limit its usage enough to keep Windows itself running safely. Taking away one star.
