I received the package, it had a small thumb drive for the installation, and a key just in case anything ever went wrong so a person can re-install. After reading so many reviews I expected problems...guess what? None. there were no problems. I installed the windows ten on my windows 7 computer and it went through so easy I was first on pins and needles, and then finally relaxed. All is good, I will say my windows 7 I had upgraded the power and the hard drive as well during the past six years I have had this HP desktop. Everything is fine. It came up with a big beautiful window of an outdoor landscape with the time, and in the far lower right hand corner a small icon I clicked on, and voila, there was my window normal as ever with various files and apps nothing was deleted or lost. then I was taken to a pre-log on window and clicked the choices I wanted, and that was that, next led me to my window and apps and icons and files just like it was. All my worries were for nothing. If you're a hold out like me full of fears, and your windows 7 works but you don't have updates anymore, buying this probably will work ujust fine, just don't turn it off during the process as it says. My laptop is already windows ten but I love this HP Pavillion its a good one, I had a new hard drive put in last year and the power upgraded three years ago, I do have another desktop that I will buy windows 10 for its a Dell. I definitely recommend, all I did was turn on my computer, plug in the thumb drive sent to me, and voila it began. I was not forced to sign in through microsoft. I still have my same Norton and everything on my task bar the same. I was prepared for a nightmare and put this off too long, and in the end it was easy peasy.

I’ve used every version of Windows since 3.0 (yes, pre-Windows 3.11) and, in my eyes, Windows 10 is the best version yet. Yes, the twice yearly service packs can be a bit of a pain. Yes, it does sometimes try to sell me things. But it’s reliable, fast and largely just works. Broader compatibility than Ubuntu or MacOS (particularly the new Catalina version that eliminates support for 32 bit apps), nice built in email and calendar functionality and a reasonable built in antivirus (still get a third party, but this is better than nothing) make Win10 a great go to OS for general use, development, gaming and more.

Yes, there’s still a cost (as there is for most things), which is sub-ideal compared to the free Linux alternatives. But given the easier install and broader compatibility with both applications and hardware, it’s not too much to pay. And this is a convenient format to buy it in.

That said, your computer probably came with Windows. Or you have an earlier version you can upgrade, likely for free. So really the only use cases for this are if you are building a PC yourself or if you have a Mac and you’re using Boot Camp or Parallels or the like. In that case, you know if you need this and if you do, then buy away!

Needed a retail version if I ever needed to switch motherboards. With an OEM key, it is permanently on the Motherboard and cannot be recycled to a new one so the Retail's ability to swap boards after deactivating the old one is nice, why not pay the extra 30 dollar premium for the ability to upgrade your sockets to the next gen without having to repurchase the same software?

Also the entire packaging looks awesome. It's a sleeve holding a box with a flap that underneath it reveals the product key code card, fits most wallet card slots if you want to carry it for whatever reason. on the left side is a paper that is folded like a brochure, and hides the USB flash drive that contains windows 10. I don't need it because of windows 10 being on the hard drive I already had, I just needed a legitimate retail key for board swap, original board had an OEM copy. I just appreciate the extra drive I guess even if it's not made for writing to and I think that might corrupt it honestly, considering other people's experiences they've been known to be cheap but its not too difficult to make your own bootable drive using Microsoft's Media Creation tool, just need a separate computer. The brochure flap has 3-step instructions on what to do on clean, blank drive installations which is simply plugging it in and making the first boot option the USB drive and then exiting. Behind the tray holding the USB drive is a manual/guide that I never used so I have no opinion on it.

My advice is to get this type of windows 10 product due to the retail version which is very useful if you like the ability to upgrade to different motherboards with ease in simple deactivation of the old computer's windows 10 and plug and play with the USB boot drive. In the long-term there's also financial ease in not buying one-time-use OEM codes and considering that Microsoft's done with windows versions, you're all set as far as I know with having to upgrade to a, "Windows 11".

I have to admit, some reviews had me second guessing whether to purchase a USB Win 10 Home Edition media loading device. I had always installed Windows using an optical drive in the past. So with all the for mentioned in mind, I held my breath, said a little prayer, put the quite cheap looking USB device in my newly fresh built home built computer, hit restart and immediately the Windows Pre-installation set up kicked into gear. Recognizing both of my NVME M2 SSD's, I made my choice of which one to install Windows on and then it was off to the races. Installation was fast, efficient and painless. It couldn't had gone any better! Make sure you have your activation key handy, because it asks for it quite early in the installation. Judging by my experience and sons as well, I would, without hesitation recommend this USB media for installing Windows 10.
