Great Motivator but Software Needs Some Work
Things I like: -- Watch is very light. I don't notice it on my arm. I would have gotten the Fenix 5 but it is way too heavy. -- The screen is always on and you can see data easily in bright sunlight. -- The Garmin Android app is far superior to Samsung's S Health. -- Advanced fitness analysis and information. -- Resting heart rate. -- vo2 max -- Recovery time -- activity caloriesThings I don't like: -- While you are The screen scratched easily. Mine (45 days old) already has a small scratch where the charger rubs against the screen. Maybe Garmin should redesign the charger attachment mechanism and maybe Garmin should add a factory installed screen protector. I have added one myself.-- When running the exercise widget you cannot get back to the clock screen or view other widgets. Garmin should be consistent and set the button they are using for the lap button to do this like it does everywhere. Long pressing the button can be used for the lap function.-- The ability to see messages on the watch does not work as well as it should. If you are not in range of your phone you cannot see messages that have been previously sent to the watch. Many times the messages will not be sent to the watch (even in a delayed fashion if out of range). The watch does not always show incoming messages. -- The Bluetooth range is low. For example I must keep my phone in my left bike pocket or it will keep disconnecting from my watch (back pocket gives trouble). If my phone is in another room the watch will keep disconnecting and reconnecting. This is very annoying because the watch keep buzzing. connect... disconnect...connect... disconnect... did I say very annoying. Maybe it should just wait a minute before it tells me it is disconnected.-- Can't snooze the alarm for any amount other that 10 minutes.-- Expensive. But after a few weeks I will forget about this. -- The box that the Garmin came in was not sealed. This is not ideal because you can never tell if someone else has previously used the watch. -- The setup with the phone failed the first time I tried but the second time it completed successfully. -- It was very difficult to add my credit card to Garmin pay. My card is for a supported bank (Chase) but kept failing. The app ran "setting up card" for a long time then fails. I tried two different cards. Both failed. Eventually after many tries the card added successfully.-- You cannot add music to the watch from the Android app. -- You cannot see realtime exercise data (ex run pace) on the Garmin Connect app. It would be nice to always have to look at watch when using the treadmill. -- You cannot add and remove widgets using the Garmin connect Android app. You can do it on the watch or the web site. -- The watch is not a touch screen. This makes it more difficult to scroll to things and I worry the buttons will wear out. I gave gotten used to this and it does have its advantages like being able to reset timer without looking at watch. -- The strap is a little difficult to get off but better difficult than falling off. Some Notes: -- Garmin weighs 40 grams. -- Fit 2 Pro weights 34 grams. -- I was able to pair Samsung Level U headset. Seems to work ok. -- I was able to copy mp3 music files to watch using "Windows" computer. -- Music play back works without issue. -- Heart rate while walking is off by as much as 7 bps compared to chest strap. -- Heart rate while using a exercise widget (run, treadmill, bike etc) is very accurate. -- Im using about 30% of battery per day.Usefull apps\widgets: -- Find My phone. -- Timer

This is my second Garmin watch, and replaces the ForeRunner 230. While I was hesitant to get rid of my 230, I am glad that I did so, as the 230 had seen more than its fair share of races and workouts. Despite all that it has been through, it still continues to work like a champ.

One of the main reasons I loved my 230 was the long battery life, which apparently is now considered a luxury in modern smartwatches. This reminds of how cellphones have evolved (remember the Nokia 3300 series?). Thankfully, the Garmin 645 remains strong in this area, and after having this watch for a few months, I can say that it easily has the same or longer battery life as that of its predecessors. I don't have my Bluetooth on constantly, but the GPS is used almost every day for about an hour or two. For this use case, I still get about 7 days of use for a full battery charge. Effectively, this is a smartwatch that can actually come in handy for sleep monitoring - something that Apple watches can only dream of!

Moving onto the features, it looks like the 645 comes equipped with a bevy of useful metrics, many of which are handy for seasoned athletes. Metrics like VO2 Max, and Aerobic workout etc. are things that I seldom look at, but definitely nice to know that I have them in case I do decide to up my routine. I use my 645 regularly to track my outdoor runs as well as those in the gym, and in both cases, the 645 performs flawlessly.

The music feature on this watch is useful for those that prefer to run without their phone and like to download their music on their devices, or rather, listen to eBooks or podcasts offline. As I like to have my phone on me during runs, I don't see myself using this feature anytime soon. The same goes for the wallet feature, which I probably won't use as I usually have my phone on me all the time, which already has the wallet feature set up and ready to go.

Overall, I would recommend this watch to any runners/athletes out there that like to track their workouts. Strava and other 3rd party app integration works pretty well (despite the recent Garmin outage that is still ongoing as of July 30, 2020). I am not a fan of the Connect app, which is a little clunky and looks somewhat dated. However, the watch in itself is awesome and should satisfy most of the needs that a typical active user would have.

Ok, almost returned this watch but decided to keep it for a little while. Well, glad I did. The watch is perfect size. Light weight makes it so much easier to wear while running. Paired with run dynamics pod, it yields tons of run data. Music function works well as long as you have the right Bluetooth headphone. Again, love the design and the size of the watch. Previously I’ve owned 935, 235, 230, 620, 225. 935 was great but the watch was just too bulky for me to wear daily.

Btw, vibration alarm is very strong on this one. Which is plus as I wake up everyday for work reliably with this.

Battery life is somewhat disappointing coming from 935, but that was expected. However, I think Garmin could’ve made it better.

    Update: 11/11/2018

I believe FR645 is the BEST runner’s gps watch Garmin produces today. So far the watch has been spot on on gps and as well as other data accuracy. Optical HR is consistent and have not failed once.

    Final Update 1/2/19

This is it! Forerunner 645 is the best running gps watch out there. 1.3 oz only, and the watch is extremely comfortable to wear all day. Fenix 5 weights 4 oz. imagine that. Amazing runners watch. This is the winner!

    LATEST UPDATE! 7/1/2020

Since the release of 645, Garmin introduced newer gps sport watches. I've tried them all. They are all great. BUT! 99% of the public will never use all the features of any of these newer watches. If your goal is to track your stats on activities and running then look no further. FR645 is it. It's light, it measures loads of running data, and it is now much cheaper. Built quality of the watch is far better than many other competitors. I will use mine for many more years.

Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2018
I bought the Garmin 645 Music version only so that I could have the slate-colored rim, rather than chrome or gold. So, I have not used the music feature. But, the watch is amazing in the number of features it has. If you are a fitness-oriented person, this is a great watch. It tracks HR, steps, many activities (running, walking, hiking, swimming, resistance training, and more) and gives a variety of fitness metrics. The Android app and Garmin Connect sites are great, mapping out and creating reports of all data. It has made me a better runner and encouraged me to be more consistently active. You can set 10 different alarms, has a countdown timer, stopwatch and more, more, more. The watch faces can be very customized to your preference. There is so much in this watch that it takes time to grow into and discover all the features. Upon initially receiving the watch, I was disappointed because the watch face had light numbers on a black background, giving a dark appearance, and that didn't appeal to me. Eventually I learned how to reverse that (light background and black numbers) and also turn on gesture control so the watch lights when brought to reading position. The size of the watch is very good. I did not want a huge or thick watch, but rather something that I could wear all the time, and this fits very nicely and comfortably on my 7-inch wrist. Battery life has been good. It is supposed to last 10 hours with GPS on, and 5 to 7 days as a watch (without Wi-Fi on but with Bluetooth on and continuous HR and activity monitoring.) I wear it 24/7, except when showering (ok to swim with this) when I put it on the charger for the duration, which seems to be enough to keep it charged up. So, great watch, not just for running, great for an all-the-time watch. And it does a lot more. Go to Garmin and download the manual to get an idea, though there's even more than that.
