The premise is very basic: your sistee is infected/dying of a disease (The Black Scrawl) and you have to travel to different regions and get the pieces to make her better, all while meeting friends along the way.
It's the kind of game that starts out slow (I was so bored and thought I would hate it), but give it a chance -eventually the world opens up to you, the cast grows larger, and you start to really care about these people. I found the Protagonist and Weiss's relationship to be especially heartwarming and sweet.
The voice acting and music are just SO good. I play in English and love Zach Aguilar and Ray Chase. They give so much life to the Protagonist. The music is just incredible, so atmospheric and moody. I have most of the soundtrack on my phone.
I've only gotten 2 out of the 6 endings and i cant wait to see the others. Love this game so much, and I hope you will too!
Then you get to go through several areas, doing the same thing again and again. Looks like we gotta get to the top of The Lost Shrine YET AGAIN! All the while some of the most shrillist singing going on in the background that you have to listen to for about 30 minutes as you conquer the walls of shades and Boxxle puzzles. This Copy/Paste game design is something they should have fixed when they remade this game.
It's too bad that the game play is this repetitive, because underneath it all is actually a decent story, apart from your character running to someone who was just impaled by a giant spear and shouting 'ARE YOU OKAY?!! (I laughed out loud). The voice acting is pretty good and the dialogue from the Grimoire made me laugh out loud several times.
I came to this game after playing the brilliant Nier: Automata. This definitely feels like the outline for what would eventually become a much better game. Nier: Replicant feels rushed. There is even an area where all you do is read text, as if the developers had no time to build that world, so they tell you what happens instead of letting you experience it. You are literally there for about an hour doing nothing but reading text.
So if you're curious about the prequel to Automata, please know that while the story is pretty good, you should be prepared for thousands of spawning Shades and doing nothing but battling them the same way over and over and over again.
