I played the original Life is Strange (2015) when I was in the mood for a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure-type game. Which is why, despite thinking the story and dialogue could've been better, I liked the game more than I disliked it; it was what I wanted at the moment. In the years since, though, I've realized that the game didn't do me the good I thought it did. Why? When I played it, I had more in common than I liked to admit with the game's secondary protagonist, Chloe. Like Chloe, I felt trapped by my circumstances and angry at life. Rather than being a brief escape from my troubles, in the end Life is Strange reaffirmed the worst in me; rather than work on myself, I immersed myself in a fictional world that, ultimately, didn't do me good.
I didn't play Life is Strange: Before the Storm (2017) because I liked the sense of mystery from the first game and thought a prequel would ruin it; it just wasn't a story I wanted to experience. I'm glad others liked it, though.
I got partway through the first chapter of Life is Strange 2 (2018) before I stopped and uninstalled it. The setting, power, plot and characters did not make me care. In addition, before giving the game a chance, I'd watched enough clips of it to know how political the story gets. The problem with the game's politics being: They're delivered with all the subtly of a bull in a china shop. Even when I'd agree with a character's point of view, the way it was presented just made me go "Ugh."
Now, my thoughts on Life is Strange: True Colors . . .
A few days before the first trailer was uploaded, I heard rumors that there was going to be a new Life is Strange game. My feelings about the series were -- at best -- mixed, so I thought, "Hmm. Cool," and went on with my life.
When I went on YouTube on the night of March 18, 2021 -- the night the trailer was uploaded -- and saw there was going to be a new Life is Strange, I was surprised that the rumors were true and happy to an extent I did not expect. I watched the trailer over and over again, more times than I remember, just taking in the excitement and peace it left me feeling. I had been having a bad day -- as I worked to better myself, a person whom I thought would be happy for me, wasn't -- and "True Colors" gave me a warm, familiar feeling that I didn't know I needed. It sounds corny, but it's true.
In the following months, I continued to work on bettering myself, and there probably wasn't a week that went by where I didn't re-watch the True Colors trailer.
The day I received my copy of True Colors, I was a different person than when I'd played the original Life is Strange years ago; I was older, and hopefully a little wiser. Which is why it was euphoric to find that, like I had grown, with True Colors, Life is Strange had grown, too. Again, that sounds corny. But it's the truth.
Having finished the game earlier today, as I listen to "Take Me Home" by Angus and Julia Stone and think about the experience, I find that there is an intelligence and maturity to True Colors that was not in the other Life is Strange games. Two examples:
1) Thanks to improvements in writing and graphics, characters come across as actual human beings. I never thought I'd laugh or be on the verge of tears while playing a Life is Strange game, but I was. And the level of detail in all things had me going "Whoa" more than once.
2) The town in which these characters live (Haven Springs) is the kind I wish was real. The setting made me more grateful for my own upbringing, too.
I finished True Colors in multiple sittings, and each time I'd start it up, I felt like I was returning to good company.
Maybe I'm still feeling euphoric, but even the one aspect of True Colors I'd call negative became a positive, in a way I didn't expect.
At the beginning of Chapter 1, there is this exchange:
Dr. Lynn: "Does your brother know about your . . . issues?"
Alex Chen: "Is that an official question, Dr. Lynn?"
Dr. Lynn being a doctor, I expected her to phrase her question in a more respectful manner. Because of this, I was bummed that the game's stance on social workers seemed to be a negative one. Do unprofessional social workers exist? This being an imperfect world, I'd say "Yes." But still . . .
Which is why this moment caught me off guard in the best way: When Alex has finished tidying up her apartment after experiencing trauma, proud of herself, she thinks, "See? I can be a person. Clean home, clean mind. Right, Dr. Lynn?"
It's only 13 words, but it shows that Alex's time with her doctor can be a source of happy memories -- that it wasn't all bad. And isn't "It wasn't all bad" life in a nutshell?
There's so much more I could say, but I'll end my review here:
Unlike the original Life is Strange, I don't see myself looking back on the True Colors experience with regret. I am at a point in my life where I have found a purpose and a place, and it makes me happy to know that I was able to find these for Alex, too.
For the positives, this game is beautifully made with really great character development and meaningful topics. It's visually stunning and that alone is so impressive.
The issue I have is that this LIS game would be the one I am most unlikely to play again. The reason for this is because the choices you make really do not alter the storyline in a meaningful way. Additionally, LIS has been known to close out the story with a final decision that is so difficult and gut-wrenching to make. This game did not deliver on that, and not only was the final decision pretty unimportant, it didn't provide much of an alternative ending to the other choice. With that being the most profound part of these games, I was pretty dissapointed.
Also, the fact that the game description gives away a huge spoiler (that doesn't happen in the very beginning of the game fyi) was really unfortunate.
Overall, I am glad I got the game because it is beautiful and profound in its own right, and it has so many loveable characters. It truly is a great ode to the other LIS games and was an enjoyable play.
Top reviews from other countries
The art style is pretty cool and I prefer it over the original art style, the lighting and atmosphere is top-notch! The voice actor for Alex is really good and it helps convey how she feels, especially towards the ending.
The gameplay itself was still rather lacking and it was over way quicker than expected. The most memorable chapter was probably the last, never expected this game to make me cry, considering how I was relatively unmoved by the first few chapters. The actual ending was rather lacking and I felt that my choices didn't matter as much as the first 3 games. Would recommend if the game is priced at$30 or below.
