Solid and cost-effective, great as digital sign too!
Let me start off by saying I've owned Kindles and other e-readers so I can say I'm already somewhat familiar with the concept. I really like what I'm seeing here for the price of this product! This is a small / affordable e-ink device that makes it ideal for all kinds of things.Personally, I'm a big fan of Overdrive to take books out of our local libraries for free on readers. My biggest complaint on Kindle readers is that this was always a hassle - I needed to do it ON A DIFFERENT DEVICE. A laptop or phone with a browser was necessary because you could not access Overdrive to explore content directly. On the Kobo, like other non-Amazon devices, you are free to browse directly on the reader, find a title you like and click borrow, all for FREE and 100% legal! This is a huge selling point to me. My kids can browse the YA and children's' section and find all kinds of content right on the device using an account they made with their local library card.The screen is great for little hands as well as big hands, it even looks great displaying some graphic novel pages (albeit in greyscale obviously). I found that I had zero problems connecting to my Wifi, and downloading books is fast and easy. Battery life is excellent as well! The only caveat is that when you DO need to charge it, it's the slightly-older micro-USB charging plug. I wish it would have been a USB-C as most of our micro USB cables are being replaced with the new standard, and in 2021 its a little weird to still have a new product use an old standard... but this is a minor issue at best.Some really cool mentions:1) There IS an experimental web browser function. It's very limited, mostly due to the limitations of using E-ink instead of a display that can be updated faster like LCD/OLED, but super cool for browsing websites for text articles!2) You can manually load a document to use as a screensaver!! This was a very cool find for me. There's a folder on the device when you plug it into your computer called .screensaver , and if you place a document in there (jpg, pdf, whatever) it will display it when the device is powered off / sleep. I actually put our weekend calendar information on there so we can refer to times / reminders, and stuck some magnetic strips to the back of the reader. Now it sits on our fridge when no one is reading, displaying our calendar and saving us at least one sheet of paper to print per month! Then whenever someone wants to read, my kids (or me!) can take it off the fridge, read a few pages, then put it back there for the next person. Because the Nia is a small and light tablet, it stays on really easily! My old Kindle was too large and fragile for that.Way to go, Kobo!
