5.0 out of 5 starsGreat wheel for the price - quality materials, fun to use, and easy to set up.
Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2016
This wheel is very easy to set up with an XBox 360 and works great with racing games. The feel is great when using the wheel; high-quality materials and a good size. If the game you're playing supports the different buttons and controls, the experience is great. No horn or handbrake supplied, but you can use certain buttons for that and the shifters and pedal work very well. For the price ($70 before taxes and shipping), you can't go wrong with this purchase.

Three important considerations before you buy are (1) you cannot have both the wheel and control signed in as a player at one time (games like GTA V with a walking and driving component will require you to turn off the connection between the wheel and your console and use the controller when walking around), (2) your table can only be between a relatively narrow set of thicknesses for the wheel to attach properly, and (3) the pedals are relatively light, so you may need to add something below to increase friction or behind them to keep the pedals from slipping.

Haven't tried it yet with a PC game, but I assume the same considerations apply and think it would really improve gameplay.

2.0 out of 5 starsLooks nice and seems well made, but dissapointed with it in action
Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2011
Waiting for this to finally be available after several delays, got it delivered today.

Opened the box and was impressed with how the wheel looked...however it does feel pretty flimsy. Has some nice rubberized grips and the shift paddles are metal and have a nice chunky clunk when you shift them. The pedals and base are a little awkward...unless you have a lot of weight resting on the pad they tend to lift off the ground under heavy brake or accelerator application. The clamping mechanism works pretty well, it stayed securely attached to my table for the 10 minutes I could stomach using it.

In terms of actually in-game use, I'm incredibly dissapointed. I guess part of it is my fault...I knew this wheel had no ForceFeedback but I assumed no one would build a controller without rumble. In the first few moments I realized I shouldn't have assumed this. There is ZERO feedback from games. If you play Forza 4 or F1 2011 in simulation mode, you know how critical it is to have feedback from the tires even if there's no official "Force Feedback". I found myself actually being significantly slower than I am with a regular controller, which is a pretty sad statement. Force Feedback adds a lot of cost to a unit, but for the gains in playability vs cost I can't understand why this doesn't have a rumble feature.

Another huge drawback is the motion of the wheel itself. It has some kind of spring or elastic material that increases tension as you increase steering angle. Right around the middle there is probably a 30 degree "dead zone" where the wheel just effortlessly floats back and forth. Trying to keep a car stable going down the straight at Silverstone on approach to Stowe is essentially impossible...approaches to most corners end up getting you unstable in braking and ruin your turn in. Incredibly frustrating.

If you play Forza or F1 in arcade mode, you'll probably have fun...same with the more arcade-y games like Test Drive/ NFS / etc. If you enjoy the more simulation style games stay far, far away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Wheel For The Money!
Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2017

Good wheel especially for the price. It isn't as nice as the logitech wheels with feedback and vibrations, but this wheel costs much much less. The wheel has a good amount of resistance, it's easy to mount, and the pedals are decent. However you may want to find a mounting solution for the pedals because they slip on the floor. Also the mounting for the wheel can be awkward depending on the table. The pedal shifters are made of metal and are high quality, wheel feels nice and is easy to grip and control. Make sure to adjust your in-game settings properly to use the wheel to its full potential. All of the integration with xbox 360 buttons are nice. I use it on PC however mostly on Dirt Rally.

While this model doesn't have feedback, it delivers smoother response than the Microsoft wireless wheel/pedals. Pedal travel is longer than the MS wheel/pedals as well (not sure if that's good or bad). Maybe it's due to the wired vs wireless of the two systems but the F458 wheel is dead on with the wheel movements on the screen. The MS wheel has a slight delay (probably millisecond). If you don't need force feedback, this wheel and pedals are great. They work very well with a Wheelstand Pro as well. 4.0 out of 5 stars Returning it because I want force feedback, however for the price it's fantastic, high quality feel, metal flappy paddle shifter
Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2016

I'm returning this unit because I want force feedback, however I can say that the build quality of the steering wheel itself is first rate, the flappy paddle gear shifter is made of metal which gives it a high quality feel, the wheel itself feels nice in your hands, the pedals are a bit of a weak point but they do the job, this costs less than a hundred dollars and it makes driving games so much better, force feedback is more expensive and I think it's worth the additional cost if you can afford it... if you want a solid, high quality, entry level wheel for PC, Xbox or PS3 this is a good choice.

There is an application for PC that will allow you to use a steering wheel with Grand Theft Auto 5, I have to say that this is pretty amazing for driving a car in Grand Theft Auto 5 for PC and utilizing the mouse at the same time to fire a weapon whilst driving, it was an unexpected addition to the GTA5 experience that I wasn't expecting... I'd recommend this wheel just for this, but
PS3 Gran Turismo 5 XL Edition , Gran Turismo 6 , Project CARS - Game of the Year Edition (PC DVD) , and Asseto Corsa are great with it.

I am returning it for force feedback, perhaps
Thrustmaster TMX Force Feedback racing wheel for Xbox One and WINDOWS , or Logitech Driving Force G920 Racing Wheel, Force Feedback Steering Wheel or Logitech Driving Force G29 Race Wheel, Force Feedback Steering Wheel

but this is a solid value and way better than a controller for any driving game for any platform.

5.0 out of 5 stars Actually a pretty good wheel for the money

Actually a pretty good wheel for the money. I know some reviewed it as braking, but you never know how rough someone is with something. For instance my significant other would play on the PS3 with the Logitech force GT I had mounted to a piece of ply wood laid across the coffee table. For a non spastic person, this is fine. For a woman that wants to over react, it was all I could do to keep that board relatively still.

For steering this wheel worked really well, I like the return to center feature, it's just the right amount of drag on the wheel as you turn it. The peddles have more tension that the force gt set I previously mentioned. Only complaint as many have mentioned is no spikes to grip carpet, amazing how much it slides just getting on and off the throttle. Not that it slips out from under you, just that after a couple laps you soon realize you are sitting slightly different to compensate. For the price, I recommend

3.0 out of 5 stars So close but yet so far - you'll race faster with the controller
Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2012

I'm a huge fan of Forza and I'd wanted to try racing with a decent wheel for the longest time. The old MS one is impossible to find and I wasn't going to fork over $800 for a Fanatec wheel so when this Thrustmaster wheel appeared it looked like the ideal solution.
Sadly, I'm going to have to agree with some of the other reviews. This won't improve your racing. Far from it, in fact. Your lap times will go up 2 to 3 seconds a lap compared to racing with a controller, IF you can keep it in a straight line. In the three weeks I've been racing with it, I've not been able to put my finger on exactly what the problem is but I'm sure it's all to do with the sloppy steering mechanism. There's no force feedback and no rumble, and there's a h-u-g-e dead zone in the middle where there's no resistance from the internal spring mechanism. The result is that the wheel induces oversteer in every car you race because you have no real "feel" for where the wheels are pointing so you always over compensate. The lack of even a rumble system means you can't tell if you've hit dirt, the kerbs, or even if the tyres are losing grip. I've tried fussing with the controller setup, adjusting the software dead zone to compensate and about the closest I got to a decent race was with a 5 degree dead zone in the centre. Since going back to my regular old controller, my lap times have dropped and I'm competitive again.
The wheel itself is fairly well made with a nice 'snick' to the paddleshifters, and the clamp is decent but the pedal box has no grips on the bottom of it so you'll end up chasing it across the carpet every time you brake or accelerate. I ended up wedging mine against a table let just to get it to stay in place. The d-pad on the bottom left of the wheel occasionally sticks and won't register any input but other than that, the rest of the on-wheel buttons register well and feel well made.
If you're a novice racer, this wheel will frustrate you. If you're intermediate or a pro, you won't bother with it after the first hour. It desperately, DESPERATELY needs force feedback and rumble.
I suppose it's worth pointing out that all my testing was done in Forza 4 - I don't know if any other racers fare better with this wheel but all we need is for Microsoft to allow us to plug in our Logitech wheels and we'll be golden. Until that point, I'd seriously stick with the controller.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrustmaster...heh...

This is the first racing wheel I've owned, so I may be a bit biased.

I got this wheel to teach a friend the basics of driving before throwing her into my car, and it's fairly close to the real thing...at least compared to arcade games.

I don't have one of those fancy setups that were built for racing sims, but I've found that a smallish table works quite well for mounting the wheel. The pedals are okay, but the base slides around too much for my liking, so I'm going to find something to attach the base to.

This racing wheel is magical.

3.0 out of 5 stars not as good as I hoped

With Ferrari and Microsoft names behind this product, you would think the design and quality would be to a higher standard but its not. The wheel is barely a decent size for an adult to use and the design/build quality is average for the most part.
First issue I had was with the missing the "RT" and "LT" buttons. Nothing wrong with leaving those buttons out since the driving games do not use them, unless you setup a password using the Microsoft hand controller and those buttons were part of the password.
The "D-pad" button is flimsy and hard to use. A lot of the time, it is hard to get the button to acknowledge just one click. I get either no action or multiple clicks when you try to move left or right. The "D-pad" button is also near the bottom of the wheel, which makes it harder to use if you are a straight up driver. It would have been a better fit if the "D-pad" button was placed in the center of the wheel where the Ferrari icon is located and implemented the same as Microsoft has done on its hand controller.

I only had the wheel for 2 weeks and it already appears that the bungee cord is not returning the wheel to dead center anymore.

The USB cable is not long enough so you can sit farther than 7 feet from the TV. I ended up buying an extension USB cable to extend the distance from the 50-inch TV.

The paddle shifters are located in the right location and have a nice feel to them. The brake and gas peddle have a good feel to them as far as quality goes.

I know that the steering wheel did not have Force Feedback when I purchased it but after using the steering wheel with Forza Motorsport 4, I think the Force Feedback would be a welcome feature.

When you can get a wired controller for $30, it is a shame I paid $89 for a steering wheel that fails to impress.

4.0 out of 5 stars You Need To Consider How You're Going To Anchor This Steering Wheel
Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2013

I got this for my son for Xmas 2012 to use with an X-Box game. He reports that it works well, though it's different from actually driving a car (ie: it's WAY more sensitive than a car's steering wheel).

The biggest challenge here is to find something to anchor the steering wheel to that will be high enough and stable enough to use consistently and comfortably, and to keep the steering wheel stationary. We had a hard time accomplishing this until we decided to turn an old fiberboard TV caddy on its side. It was high enough and heavy enough to work, and the gas/brake pedals fit into the bottom. We did have to add some non-slip kitchen drawer rubber pieces under the pedals to keep them from sliding about.

I imagine you could get the same effect utilizing one of those 2-shelf, put-it-together fiberboard bookcase units that one finds at Target and elsewhere.

The steering wheel attaches via a vise-like brace that sits underneath the "dashboard." It's imperative that you find a surface that does NOT have a lip or molding running around it, as you won't be able to attach the wheel. It works best if you have a 3/4" - 1" thick board to attach to. The dashboard on top and the vise below the board both need to be flush with the board you're attaching to or it's a waste of time.

Once you get the right stand to attach to, it works like a charm. Trying to use the wheel/pedal combination with the wheel sitting on your lap is no picnic.

Recommended, but it takes a bit of work/ingenuity to get it right.
