5.0 out of 5 starsGreat backup camera at a reasonable price
Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2016
I have installed two of these cameras. The first was on a Ford Ranger pickup, in April 2014. Since then the truck has been kept outside in rain, snow, and cold in northern Minnesota, and the camera still works fine. Just completed the second installation on a Porsche Cayenne. Installation is easy. If you have any trouble figuring out your car's wiring, just do some Googling and you will likely find the answer.

The video quality is not fabulous, but it is fully adequate for my needs -- all I really want to know is, is there something behind me? This unit certainly tells you that, and the wide angle is an advantage as it shows a considerable area to left and right. After all, you don't want to see just what is directly behind you, but also anything approaching from either side. The wide angle also means objects are closer than they appear, but this seems a fair trade-off for wider field of view.

Also worth noting that you can mount this in places other than the license plate, though the manufacturer does not intend that. On the Cayenne I mounted it to the plastic shroud below the rear bumper (the Cayenne's license plate is on the rear hatch, far removed from the reversing light wiring). Removed the metal bracket that is attached to the camera with four small screws, bent it to desired shape, drilled holes in it to accommodate machine screws, re-attached the bracket to the camera, and mounted it.

Would also note that if your car has an overhead console, you might be able to tap into power there and mount the camera up there in an unobtrusive position. I did this with the Cayenne, putting the camera in the little hatch intended for stowing sunglasses.

1.0 out of 5 starsIn my experience this kit is a waste of time and money
Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2016
I found this kit very disappointing. Installation is simple, but not necessarily easy because the quality of the components is barely adequate. Wire connectors of a very common design are provided to take power from a backup light feed. The wire feeding the light does not have a loose end, so it needs to be slipped into the connector which opens in book fashion. Or rather it is supposed to open in book fashion, but the plastic is so stiff that it is a considerable struggle to fit that wire into the connector. After I had finally connected both wires to the camera I checked to see if the camera was sending to the display unit, and it was. I reinstalled my taillight assembly, tried again and found there was no signal to the camera. The connectors had cut my wires. After splicing in a bit of wire and soldering it all together the unit worked again, and there was little left to do other than try to find a place in my pickup cab for the display (so far I've been unsuccessful as I'm unwilling to obstruct my view through the windshield, but this is not the fault of the kit.)

In use I have found the same faults as other reviewers who have given the kit a low rating. The image quality is very poor. Resolution is poor; objects appear blurred. Color is variable depending on lighting, but can be almost monochromatic. Combined with the poor resolution this makes the unit hard to use. The wide angle means, as others have mentioned, that only what is quite close is really seen clearly. The camera cannot cope with variable lighting. For instance, if the camera takes in bright sky, which can happen when on a slope with the back end higher than the front, the rest of the image is essentially black, which renders it wholly useless. The camera does not like shade.

Conceptually this kit seems good. If all goes well installation is very simple and easy. My kit functions when it is supposed to. The problem for me is that the camera and other components are of such low quality, and the effective field of view so small that the kit is essentially useless. Compared to the factory installed backup camera in my other vehicle--well, there is no comparison.

I purchased this camera for my wife's jeep wrangler. I will say that it was pretty easy to install. I was a little nervous about the wiring part of it but once I got into the job I found it to be pretty easy. The wire clips that come with the camera made it easier to install. The camera quality is good but not great but I am comparing it to my factory backup camera on my truck which probably isn't a fair comparison. My wife wanted it primarily just to make sure there weren't any children or smaller obstacles behind her when she backs up and it works well for that purpose.

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy install, but angle of view is extremely wide
Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2014

I just installed this today on my Subaru outback. I had to drill one hole above the license plate, but I did not even have to remove a single bolt to route the wire to my driver side reverse light. I soldered the connections in place, as I don't have much faith in the supplied connectors. Install time was probably 30 min. tops, and that was only because I had to make several trips to the house for tools. Extremely simple to install.

I had no trouble with the camera communicating with the monitor, again, installation was a breeze. if you are purchasing this to help hook up trailers, you will absolutely love it! You can point the camera down, and get extremely accurate alignment.

The bad part for me was the extreme wide-angle lens. Everything looks a mile away, and then suddenly you're right on top of it. While one of my goals was to help with trailer hitch alignment, I also wanted this to aid in backing up my 16 foot boat trailer into the water. While you can see the boat winch clearly, it's really not much help at looking at the distant end of the trailer. Your sense of depth is totally distorted.

Again, if your goal is to have a camera to aid in trailer alignment, this thing really shines, but I also think there is less expensive units out there for this purpose. I did find the monitor hard to see in bright sunlight. Ironically this unit actually performs better with less light due to its infrared technology. I hooked up my boat trailer at midnight with perfect accuracy!

For me, it really did not fit the bill, but it has a lot of really positive qualities too, I suggest people to take a look at a few U-tube videos of this in use, as it gets pretty close to a fisheye perspective.

Survived my first car well as well. No fogging, and did not dislodge from the giant auto car wash roller.

3.0 out of 5 stars Camera fogs up. Can't reach customer service
Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2014

I have never reviewed anything, ever. I buy a ton of stuff from amazon and have never taken the time to review anything until now. I ordered this back up camera after my daughter backed into a car in our Ford Excursion. It seemed like a decent product with a decent price and easy install and it was. But the problem with the camera is that in our cool Northwest winter the camera fogs up on the inside of the lens cover and it completely obscures the picture making it completely useless. I have tried to contact the company to see if my unit wasn't sealed properly or what. Initially when I called a recording indicated that they were having technical difficulties with their phone system. I then waited a couple of weeks and called back. This time the voice recording directed me to customer service which rang and then answered and said the mailbox was full. I called back and the recording transferred me to the operator who also has a full volce mailbox. I have been unable to contact the company, the camera is useless due to fogging up.

1/26/2012

I am updating my review to be fair to the company. I was finally able to contact them by email. I explained my situation and the customer service guy said he thought the factory seal was probably compromised on my camera and once I gave him my info he sent me a new one. I haven't had a chance to install it yet but at least they stood behind the product enough to send a new camera. I thought that was pretty cool, so I ugraded them to 3 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Backup camera system works well and at a great price

The 2014 F-150 that we just bought didn't have an backup sensors or camera, so I installed this to provide the backup camera.

Not much to say. It installed easily, works well and was priced right. The display could be a little bit better (it's not as good as the factory installed system in our Hyundai Santa Fe, but it is not bad if you get contrast and brightness adjusted.

Being wireless is nice so I didn't need to run a video cable from the back end of the truck into the cab.

At the same time I installed an audible backup system so we have both audio and video for knowing when something is behind the truck.

Usually I don't leave reviews but this time i will because the good customer service experience. I mounted the camera to my Honda Ridgeline and it was not working, the camera wasn't get any power. I checked the wire 3 times and nothing. The camera come with two wire, a red and a black, the wire for the reverse light on my truck are red and green, so I connected the red with the red and the green with the black and nothing, I was ready to return it but I called the customer service today around noon, nobody answer and I did not leaved any message, this afternoon I was driving home and I give it another try, so I called and this guy picked up the phone I explained the problem (at best as i could because my broken english and a thick Italian accent)and the guy told me to try to invert the wire, so I got home and I did what he told me. The camera works beautiful, it has a clear image I just love it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Small screen, only somewhat useful - reasonable price!
Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2014

I installed one of these in my Toyota Avalon (2002) about 3 weeks ago. Installation was reasonably easy although I drilled a hole for the wire rather than using an existing hole in the trunk - my choice. I turned it on and it worked the first time. I set up a board to simulate a curb, and had another car there to park in front of. I practiced many times trying to get a feel for how it might help in the parking process. I tried to use the grid system to estimate curb position, distance to the car behind, how close I could back beside a car without hitting it (simulating backing into a space in a full parking lot.) I am a mechanical engineer, so I like to test things and get a feel for how they work. Here are my comments:

1 - the screen is small as others have said
2 - the image is somewhat fuzzy even in bright sunlight - also about the same at night.
3 - the "grid" lines aren't adjustable, so although they look useful, they don't appear to indicate anything helpful (like: width of vehicle, distance from an object, correct distance from curb, etc.)
4 - the view is very wide angle so anything that is more than about 6 feet away is very small, and distant items are tiny and hard to identify
5 - the color reproduction is poor. Good color would add some information.
6 - there is no alarm to tell you when you are at a predetermined distance from an object. For instance - as you back up, the car behind keeps getting bigger, and bigger, AND BIGGER, but you can't tell when you are about to bump it.
7 - And I find this very annoying - it turns off when you move the shift lever out of reverse, and then takes about 4 seconds to turn on again each time you shift back in reverse. So when parking you can't see the effect of moving slightly forward, and then you have to wait each time for it to turn on again before you can back up again - surprisingly irritating!
8 - after driving in the rain, the image was more blurry than usual until I got out and wiped the lens. This may be true for any of these units! It still wasn't much help.

All together, I don't find it very useful, although it does work as described. (The image on the box is misleading as the unit has a much wider angle lens and a fuzzier image than what is shown on the box. If it worked like that image suggests, I think I would like it much better.) I plan to send it back and try to find one with a bigger, clearer image and with an adjustable distance alarm. An alarm would be a clear advantage!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Unit, Screen Too Small
Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2014

This camera / monitor combo does everything it advertises. It's awesome. I'm giving it 4 stars only because the monitor is small as advertised. Put an 8 inch monitor on this, it'd be perfect and I'd give it 7 stars if I could.

Disclaimer: I am older and wear bifocals. Those with better sight than I may not have any problem with the small monitor. It might just be me.

To all those asking if it will "fit" your blah, blah, blah. Yes, it will. The camera just goes on the back somewhere and the monitor just goes in the driver's area somewhere. It is not rocket surgery. All you have to do to install it is hit a hot wire somewhere and a ground. No biggie.

The manual suggests that you wire it to the backup light, which sounds reasonable enough. I did that and I did not like the result. The monitor goes black if you pull forward. I ended up wiring it all to a switched keyed hot AND the backup circuit so if I hit the switch it goes on OR if I shift into reverse it goes on and if I turn the switch off or the key off, it goes off. Bliss. But this does require one to run the hot back to the camera. Again, no biggie.

I have had no interference problems with the video feed. I attached the camera to the rear bumper with a couple of strong magnets so I can move it if I want. Down low to hook up to the trailer, up higher to see behind me on the road or when parking or to keep on eye on the trailer. The magnets cause no problem. My bluetooth phone causes no problem.

The bottom line is that since I installed this camera I can hook up to my camper up to my trailer all by myself the first time every time without fail. No more get kinda close, get out, walk back and check. Repeat 3 times. And isn't that why we are looking at these items?

You'll be happy with this unit.

1.0 out of 5 stars More about vendor than product
Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2013

Can't say much here. The unit I got was open box and even missing a few small things. The vendor refunded my money but I was ot able to install while on vacation at my elderly parent's house. There was absolutely no question the box was not factory sealed either. It was obviously returned and then put back on the shelf.

So I did get this thing to work and I was really excited while on the bench. Always recommend bench testing especially when obviously open box. Toolkit apart and proceeded to install. Easy install with more than enough wire to put transmitter where it needed to be. There was almost enough to install the transmitter under the dash but then why would I need the wireless?

Display unit was good. Clear and bright. Easy enough controls and automatic. I think.

After all the time spent, and a hole drilled in the trunk to properly install (actually through an existing grommet for the backup lights) I went to test the system. Nothing. Figured it was the scotch locks on the backup light wires. Well it worked on the bench test right!?

Cut and soldered wires for backup light. Worked! Got in to brag and show mom that she can now see far better. Nothing. Nada. Hmmm. Put it in park. Think. Put it in reverse to work on it some more. The picture appeared. Yay! Then gone. It was not a wireless issue. After hours of checking wiring, as there isn't any. I gave up and dragged the transmitter inside the car and set it next to monitor. Put the car in reverse. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. Sometimes it would just cut out after half a second or not at all or work perfectly.

When it worked it was truly awesome. But I know exactly why it was returned the first time. It was defective and it was sent to me as a new unit. I had it sent very expensively to get it there in time for my visit to my elderly parents. Then when I called to get a replacement, it was not an option. I had to send it back for credit. Why the heck they did not offer an overnight replacement shows just how much they care.

Alli got was excuses that they could not tell it was opened and returned. Funny, open box, open bags, a foreign mini ziplock bag for some screws that did not even belong to the unit. Ya, I can see how it looks factory since the long wire was still coiled and twist tied.

Buy this unit but not from this seller. Unless the intermittent issue is built into this device. I could ot tell since mine failed. When it WAS working, it looked very very good.
