i'm in the middle with this one. first, make sure your ordering the right thing. i got a handset that was just that without a phone. it should look like an answering machine. this is a very lightweight phone, no antenna's like my old phone. i wrote in - does this thing light up? they said no, it doesn't, the screen lights when it rings. the phone has a red light on top when it rings and there is a phone in use light...
but what they didn't say is - there is always a number on the answering machine even when that's off, and there is a hand set light, a very bright red LED light on the handset. i had to cover that with paint to keep it dark.
the handset is light, but a bit slick and hard to hold onto. when you press a number it says the number in a clean, male voice that is easy to understand.
but when the phone rings (besides both the base and handset rings at slightly different times ) the phone's caller ID in a female voice, tries to announce it. and does a really terrible job at it. i have to turn that off. its actually very annoying. other than that its a phone, seems to work, i just hate that it has all those lights on it.
update 2-26-17
despite there being a battery in the handset. when the power is lost, the time resets. and for some reason if there is data in the phone, like caller ID stuff, the menu button doesn't work properly. it behaves like message playback. and because i can't set the date until i get a phone call (it can use a call to set it), the zero blinks, which is incredibly annoying.
