About me: Been an avid photographer for over 20 years... I've used Leica, Nikon, Canon SLR's... currently using Nikon D800, and have recently updated my collection of lens and in particular FX lenses.

I have many Nikkor D lenses and few G lenses, but recently I bought this 28mm f/1.8G and the 28-300mm VR lens. Both of these are FX lenses (for full-frame cameras like D4 and D800/D800E), and they have superb sharpness. I use the 28-300mm for my travels, and it's my all-purpose lens, and I got this 28mm prime in large part to (1) large aperture of f/1.8, and (2) the fast focusing.

With regard to the large aperture, there are two key benefits I was looking forward to have and it did not disappoint. First, it gives a beautiful background blur (bokeh) and was able to isolate subjects with sharp focus while producing a creamy background. However, you cannot expect this lens to produce the same bokeh as that from the 70-200mm f2.8G VRII (which I also own). Again, these lenses have different purposes. I use the 70-200mm for sports and portraits (with subjects far away). This 28mm allows me to stay very close to my subject (e.g. lifestyle shots of kids) to get full body portraits while throwing the backdrop off focus. Compared to the 28-300mm at 28mm, the bokeh of this 28mm prime is much nicer as it have a wider aperture than the zoom. The second key advantage of its f/1.8 is the fact that it really allows to shoot at virtually anywhere in the day (indoor or outdoor), and I still get great shots in evening or dimly lit places with my D800.

With regard to focusing speed, my experience has been predominantly with the D800 - which on its own has improved and very capable focusing. Getting the subject focused is not only fast, but also much more consistent in giving great results (sharp eyes in human subjects). In comparison to my other prime D-type lenses, and the G-type zoom lenses (e.g. 70-200mm, and 28-300mm), the 28mm f/1.8G beats them all.

With regard to image quality and contrast, there has already been many reviews on the edge sharpness of this lens and the quality of it at various apertures. You can refer to those provided by DPReview and ByThom (Thom Hogan) for details, but I would attest that the quality of image produced by this lens is exceptional! However, please note that as with all great lenses, it's important to have good glass in front of them if you intend to put a protective filter in front.

I'll be writing more and perhaps uploading some shots on the bokeh (background blur) if people are interested. If this review is of some help to you, just let me know by clicking the "This is helpful" button, and if there's any areas not covered, feel free to include the comments, and I'll update the review. Thanks for reading.

No wonder DXOMark rates this 28mm F1.8G among the best Nikkor lenses (the 85mm F1.4G prime lens holds the top honors), (hundreds of) pictures taken with our 3 Nikon bodies (D800, D300S, D3200) are just marvelous in all aspects (color depth/vibrancy, contrast, sharpness both at center and edges). We’d wanted a wide-angle prime in addition to our (Nikon Trinity) 24-70mm F2.8G zoom but also wanted to stay away from 24mm or less focal lengths to avoid too much distortion. Although this 28mm lens is DXOMark-rated slightly (just 1 point overall) below the Nikkor 24mm F1.4G, it serves us well for both FX (28mm) and DX (35mm) purposes. Its auto-focus is fast and also precisely accurate out of the box (AF-fine-tunings on our D800 and D300S stayed at 0 (the D3200 does not have the AF-fine-tuning capability)). As with all premium Nikon FX lenses, this lens can bring out the best and, unfortunately, the worst of your camera/sensor. It easily out-resolves both our D3200 and D300S when pictures of the same subject/scene are compared to those from the D800. It also shows the (sometimes subtle, sometimes obvious) differences in the camera/sensor qualities; for example, at the same very fine ISO settings (250 or less), my test pictures of Bird-of-Paradise vibrant flower colors when viewed at Actual Pixel resolution in both Photoshop CS6 CameraRAW and ViewNX2 show silky smooth color transitions end to end of the flowers with both the D800 and D300S, whereas those with the D3200 appear to be slightly noisy with subtle chromatic aberrations. Shooting wide open at F1.8, the bokeh with this lens, while noticeably less than those with our 85mm F1.4G and 105mm F1.8G primes, is about as pleasant as the bokeh with our prime 50mm F1.4G, and slightly beats the bokeh, albeit not bad, with our (Nikon Trinity) 24-70mm F2.8G zoom at 28mm F2.8 (obviously due to the narrower aperture). For this type of effects, this lens easily picks out its focused subject and dramatically isolates from foreground and background scenes in literally all different lighting conditions we put it through. Overall, extremely satisfying for wide-angle photography.

This Lens should sell for $500. It is very Sharp But has a light plastic feel and it is made in China. The upside to plastic is its light and if it was metal I would complain about weight. If you shoot at night the 28mm prime F1.8 very good lens and ultra sharp.
For value the 28-300 mm F 3.5 is a better value and only $280 more. I see more and more Pros going to the mid range
zoom 24-70 mm as their walk around lens, I use this lens for my day shooting, It's sharp and F 2.8 and is good until Dusk.
I'm using these lenses on a Nikon D 800 and if Canon was better I would of gone with the Canon system they still lack the lens
Sharpness of Nikon glass. Its been 2 years now and Canon cannot get at least a 36 Megapixel sensor!!!
You can trust Amazon. If you find a new Nikon much cheaper Beware of loosing all your money to fly by night New York/New Jersey scum bag thieves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful general walk-around, group and landscape lens.
Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2015

When I bought this lens, I was looking for a sharp, fast prime for group photography, walk-around and landscapes. It meets all those needs very well. I've used it with a D600, D610 and D750. It produces very nice bokeh wide open and is sharp all around.

Since then Nikon has released the 20mm f/1.8G and the 24mm f/1.8G. It's possible that if I had to choose with all three available at the time, I would have probably picked the 20mm f/1.8G instead, but I'm glad those choices were not open to me at the time, because I feel the 28mm is a bit more versatile. It's not too wide and it's not too narrow. The 20mm and 24mm would have been a bit too wide for most other photography. They probably would have stayed in the bag more often than the 28mm does. In fact the 28mm is attached most of the time when going out for casual shooting even though I also have a 50mm f/1.4G and 85mm f/1.8G, both of which can be a little too narrow sometimes.
Simply put, the 28mm is ready for just about any situation. Love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome lens

I have been wanting to get a new wide lens that could perform as good as my 70-200 VRII and that opened up to at least 1.8 I can't afford the 24mm 1.4 and since I'm shooting full frame now I didn't want to re-buy the AFS 35mm 1.8 so I opted for this one.
I am amazed at the sharpness and accuracy of this lens, I had backfocus issues with my 35mm and sold it. Then bought the 16-35 VR lens but F4 was just too slow, and my copy is a little soft when I compared it to my 70-200. I felt the 28mm was a good option for the range i wanted to shoot, and wow am I impressed! This lens is very sharp even at 1.8 and shooting around 2.8 my shots are very close if at times better then what I was getting with my 70-200. I love this lens it's now my favorite and gets me stunning contrasty shots that I couldn't achieve with my 16-35mm.

I used to think that maybe my technique was a little off and thats why I was having issues getting tack sharp photos when within 5 feet of my subject matter but this lens has truly improve the quality of photos i'm getting.

Just got this lens about two weeks ago and I have nothing but superlatives to pass along. I have been shooting it on my d7100 and have found it to be razor sharp corner even wide open. The clarity is remarkable and the colors are wonderful. I was surprised to find it to be so light in weight despite its obvious superb build.

I have found it to be superb for portraits unless you are on top of the subject where you can gat some AP distortion,

The focus is tack sharp and incredibly fast and very quiet.

In short. you will not go wrong with this lens. 5 Stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast wide prime
Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2012

I have been looking for a wide fast prime recently for my Nikon D7000, and had almost pulled the trigger on a Sigma 24 or 28mm f1.8 when I got the news of the pending release of the Nikon 28mm f1.8. I decided to hold off and ultimately I bought the Nikon.

I own several Sigmas (10-20mm, 150mm macro and 150-500 telephoto) and consider them all good values, but none are compatible "as-is" with the newer Nikon bodies in terms of autofocus in Live-View/movie mode.

My need was specifically for a wide prime (I have a Nikon 50mm f1.8) for indoor shots. With f1.8 I am a full two stops faster than my current wide lenses (Sigma 10-20 and Nikon 16-85mm) at f3.5-4.0. That's ISO 800 in very low light instead of ISO 3200 at 1/60 sec - a big difference!

So - how's the Nikon? Overall I'm quite happy. The 28mm f1.8 combination is just what I needed. 28mm is wide enough to capture the entire scene - even in fairly small rooms. When too wide the newer high-MP bodies allow you to crop.

Sharpness is always an issue in low light with wide fast lenses but this lens gives good results. The lens loses a little sharpness at f1.8, but nothing major. Edge sharpness is apparently better than the Sigmas, but at f1.8 the background is out of focus anyway, so who cares? Of course with my DX sensor edge issues are less critical.

Autofocus performs well - fairly quick and I am pleased with low-light performance. The lens is fairly compact and quite light.
If you're looking for a wide prime (wider than the lower cost 35 and 50 mm f1.8 Nikon offerings), less costly than the 24mm f1.4 and that is fully compatible with the newer Nikon bodies then this is your baby.

GOOD LENS, BUT NOT FOR EVERYDAY NORMAL STREET PHOTOGRAPHY. I WAS COMPARING THIS WITH A 35mm LENS WHEN I DECIDED TO BUY IT. EVEN FOR INDOOR USE, THIS WILL NOT CREAT BOKEH AS COMPARE TO 50mm LENS. YES THIS IS A PRIME LENS WITH F/1.8G, DOES HAVE NANO CRYSTAL COATINGS ALONG WITH SOME OTHER COATINGS, IT DOES HAVE GOOD LOW LIGHT PERFORMANCE BUT 28mm IS VERY WIDE FOR MY USE, INSIDE THE HOME AND ALSO OUTSIDE, IT'S WIDE ALSO WILL NOT CREATE MUCH OF BOEKH WHICH MAKES THE PHOTOS LOOKS ATTRACTIVE, USING A PRIME LENS.

IF YOU REALLY WANT A 28mm LENS, AND YOU KNOW WHAT YOU NEED, THAN YES, THIS IS A GREAT LENS, PRICED VERY REASONABLY. IT'S LIGHT WEIGHT AND VERY GOOD LOW LIGHT PERFORMANCE.

3.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Performance But Feels Inexpensive

UPDATE 4/21/2013
First, two stars off for build quality. I'm not talking about the plastic filter threads others complain about, which really is very disappointing to find on a lens costing more than $50. I'm complaining about the basic build robustness and Nikon's poor quality control that led be to return four copies to Amazon because each had two or more of these defects:

__ Extreme amount of lateral chromatic aberration. Wide open, this lens on a Nikon D800 should have at most two pixels purple fringing in high contrast areas. Samples returned were so bad, test targets had an overall purple cast.
__ Fuzzy images. This is related to LCA and likely alignment problems.
__ Manual focus had a gritty or crunchy feel, unlike any lens I've every handled. Other reviewers report slipping, but I did not have that problem.
__ Auto Focus sticks is several places. I can't hear the motor engage.
__ The Nikon gold lettering was flaking off, right out of the box. I've never seen that before!

After returning four copies to Amazon, I thought maybe they just got a bad production run. So I ordered a fifth lens from Adorama and it has made it through the checklist above and appears to be in spec.

Potential
I shoot with a Nikon D800, which is very demanding on the optics. DxO labs scores the 28mm f/1.8G a 33, making the best performing 28mm lens available in a Nikon mount at any price. It is even somewhat sharper than the legendary Nikon 24mm f/1.4 at a fraction of the price.

Practical
Operating the lens, AF is fast and responsive when it works. If you're shooting video, though, the "Silent" Wave motor is pretty loud, so it will be picked up on the audio track if you use the built-in or an attached microphone. Unfortunately, the manual focus for my final sample is still a little gritty and audible, so you can't pull focus on a sound scene with an attached mic. The lens is light weight and has a relatively small front element for it's speed. It is physically long, with a higher profile than the 50mm f/1.4 G.

Image Quality
- Vignette is very strong and pronounced at f1.8, completely gone by f4.0.
- Lateral Chromatic Aberration is about 10µm at f1.8 and well corrected by f2.8
- Distortion is remarkably low on an FX sensor for a lens this wide and fast.
- Images have good contrast and saturation.

I'm on the fence about recommending this lens. It really is just barely OK, over priced and not very robust.
