5.0 out of 5 starsNoctua NH-U14S delivers excellent cooling with silence, a reasonable price, and is extremely stable when mounted.
Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2014
Decided to go with air instead of liquid cooling even though I have an i7-4770K overclocked to 4.4Ghz so like all Haswell chips, they run hot anyway. I almost purchased the Noctua NH-D14 but I am glad I didn't. After researching CPU Coolers during the process of picking out parts for my new build, I found that the NH-U14S had great results in comparison to some larger, twin tower heat sink coolers like the NH-D14 or the Dark Rock 3 Pro. This is a very large heat sink itself and weighs 1.7lbs with the fan which I am as of now, only running one 140mm fan on it. At idle, my CPU is stable @ 30C - 31C on average at it's stock speed of 3.5Ghz and 35C at 3.9Ghz. This is after installing a Geforce GTX 770 (also at 31C - 32C idle) and I thought clearance might be an issue but it turns out I have about one inch or so which is more than I actually expected. Mounting this CPU Cooler is VERY simple and the brackets used are well designed, it will NOT move.

I will be putting another 140mm fan on but it is not because the CPU is reaching extremely high temperatures even at 100% load when I was testing it using various stress/blend testing software. It reached a high of 65C @ stock 3.5Ghz and 78C +/- 2C when overclocked to a stable 4.4Ghz with a +0.001V offset. My ambient room temperature is around 21C or 70F just to use as a control.

Basically, this CPU Cooler is worth every penny and rivals it's twice the size big brother NH-D14 and even liquid cooling to a point. I have never liked liquid cooling because even if it is securely hooked up, one mess up and everything is ruined. I looked at the Hyper EVO 212 and am glad I did not purchase it. It simply can not keep up this with cooler at all. Once I put another fan on there (I may go with the redux version from Noctua) I will not be expecting a dramatic decrease in temperature but enough to warrant the purchase and the redux versions have an even higher performance rate.

I would definitely suggest this CPU Cooler to ANYONE who wants to go with air cooling instead of liquid. Even with liquid, don't expect more than 3C - 5C difference... just not worth the money nor risk to me, sorry. I must also say that the thermal paste which comes with it, the NH-T1 rivals Arctic Silver and IC Diamond. It has zero curing time and very little goes a long way. I used it on my old box and was astonished at a 14C decrease in temperature. However, that was applied to a stock cooler so it was expected to improve but I didn't realize it would do so by that much.

A couple of things to keep in mind if you do purchase this CPU Cooler... you will probably lose your first PCI slot on your motherboard and it's height can cause issues with a lot of cases. I have a Fractal R4 so it is a large mid-sized ATX case and I have plenty of room to spare so make sure you have a wide case, take measurements!!. It cleared ALL RAM slots however only by enough to stick a piece of paper between them so even though I don't use high-profile RAM, you could probably get by with Corsair vengeance RAM but the heat shrouds will stick up far enough to block about an inch of the fan so I would definitely research everything before making a final decision.

Anyway, I took a gamble on a very nice CPU Cooler that has nothing but great reviews and was not disappointed at all. The benchmark temperatures were dead on accurate but it also helps that I have a large case and all my case fans are 140mm Fractal silent series fans.. it is absolutely silent. I hear the GPU fans over anything else and because my case is has silent proofing foam and even with a window, you simply can't hear it unless you are sitting in dead silence. The CPU fan produces the least noise of all however. Simply put... the Noctua NH-U14S is an awesome cooler and handles my i7-4770K like a champ at stock and overclocked although I do not run it at 4.4Ghz except for certain times.

Watch Dogs was the first game I tested the CPU with and it didn't get over 47C (I believe that number is correct.) What is correct is that for $60, I would use this cooler on any build as long as the case dimensions allow for it!

1.0 out of 5 starsWhat happened Noctua?
Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2023
I've gotten a couple of these recently and they're VERY different from what I got 2 - 4 years ago.

For one the thermal paste is very soft and when I go to remove the cooler is slips off, almost like there's not even a bond.

But the bigger issue is the surface coverage on the CPU. Once again when I go to remove the cooler, there's almost zero paste in the center of the CPU. And before I go on I'm now using Arctic MX-4 for which I have a large tube and I get excellent results with it. So, if you go to remove a cooler and the paste is really thick in places and thin or barely even exists in others, those places where it's thick was areas where the plate wasn't making good contact with the CPU. The places where the paste is almost non-existant is from the plate pushing very hard in that spot against the CPU. And that's what I see. I can't trust these coolers because I think they're pushing too hard in the center of my CPUs and not making good contact on the sides, and the temperatures reflect this because these perform the worst of any cooler I have. I can safely say the older single tower, 120mm fan solutions work better than this thing. On top of that it's hard to turn the screws, that's different.

To me these are basically junk now, and won't be buying Noctua again. I can buy a $20 cooler that will do better than this, and I also won't have to worry about my CPU getting crushed in the middle.

Also since the base plate isn't making good contact with the CPU, and the CPU is running hotter, which of course spins up the fan to go faster so it's a bit more fan noise.

I'm sorry but the name doesn't keep me coming back, the quality does, but the quality in the manufacturing seems to be gone so I'm taking advantage of learning about other coolers and there are a few coolers that score better than this in reviews, just as easy to install, have great coverage on the CPU, keep my temperatures down, and they are doing all this costing 1/2 as much.

And this isn't a one off. I bought one recently, saw this problem and then replaced it with another one and same problem. They've been tested on multiple AMD Zen 2 and Zen 3 Ryzen CPUs, and yes these are designed for those CPUs (AM4).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great results, quiet, and quality product

My home server is running an Intel Core i7 5820x (passed down from my wife's previous media-creation rig) on an old Lepa liquid cooler. Sadly, the pump on that cooler finally died. I only knew this because the server would lock up and turn-off ungracefully after being on for ~20 minutes. After a couple iterations of this, I checked the HW temps after the next boot up and watched the CPU temps slowly climb to 105C before the computer died again. A smarter man would have shut the server off before it got that hot, but fortunately the CPU still seems ok.

I didn't want spend a small fortune on another liquid cooling solution now knowing that a water pump can fail and you won't know it until it's too late. There's no easy way of diagnosing a failed water pump; at least with an air-cooling-only solution, the only moving part is the fan and it's easy to see if it's still spinning or not. So I grabbed the first air-cooler I could get next-day that looked reliable after a few minutes of research and this is what I bought.

It arrived the next afternoon as promised and I was immediately impressed with the packaging, build, included brackets for socket compatibility, and that a tube of thermal grease was included (vs re-applied, lower-quality paste). I don't build PCs regularly, but one or two a year - enough to see the progression of CPU sockets over the years and was glad this didn't require a backing plate. Though that seems to be a feature of LGA 2011 moreso than the cooler, but still nice to know for builders that you don't have the potential struggles with gaining access to both sides of the mobo. Anyway, the instructions were well-written and clear and I was able to get the new cooler installed in a few minutes.

Most impressively, the results were clear. Now, take this with a grain of salt because dust hasn't settled in yet and the CPU hasn't been pushed yet, but at idle, it is running at 20C/70F with this cooler and I can't hear the fan - at least not over the case fans. If I hadn't watched the temps creep up over boiling the previous day, I would have doubted these numbers. I honestly didn't expect ambient-air temps were possible on a CPU on an air cooling solution. I am looking at a Ryzen 7 5800X to upgrade my gaming rig and now I'm seriously considering this as the cooler for that too.

The only downside is that because of the size, the air-duct that came with my PC's case - mounted to the side fan - had to come off, so this CPU cooler probably won't fit in smaller (thinner) PC cases.

My very first time with a Noctua cooler, and I must say it's huge and amazing.
Easy to mount, very quiet even on big loads and cools down mi CPU (Ryzen 7 3700X) as good as my old AIO CoolerMaster Lite 120 (the main reason of change, after 5 years of use it started to make a lot of noise).

5.0 out of 5 stars Temps are great for air cooling, but its so heavy!

Used with an i9 10850k, Noctua NH1 paste, on an MSI z490 ACE motherboard. 31c normal idle temp, and 65c steady at 100% load for hours. That seems good to me considering this is an air cooler with an 10th gen i9. Clock and current is mostly stock settings for the CPU.

Installation was a little tricky because the size and weight made it difficult to thread the screws and keep it centered on the CPU while holding on to sharp fins. The included long screwdriver was helpful. I think the fan mounting bracket/wire could be better; perhaps something that is universal fit for any fan of that size in case you wanted to swap it out for another fan. Tall memory modules can get in the way of this heatsink; I had to mount the cooling fan a half cm high myself. That is more the MB mfr's fault anyway, since the heatsink is reasonably slim; not so much for the fan. That's something worth considering when buying RAM more than a 1.5cm or so tall. There are optional parts available to make this a push/pull fan setup, if you didn't opt for that model and want the extra thermal headroom.
The base is nearly mirror polished and looks very flat to me, so I would imagine that good contact with the CPU. Build and materials quality is excellent, feels like a hefty chunk of metal.
The brown/beige fan is a bit of an eyesore if you care about that. There is a blacked out model, if you prefer. The fan is fairly quiet at 50% but starts moaning a little bit at full speed. I got about 46dbm max with a non-certified smartphone app, but sounds about right to me. Its nearly silent below 800 rpm, to me.

I would recommend this Cooler for anyone who wants an alternative to water-cooling with a 10th Gen i9 CPU. It works just fine, and there's no pump to fail. Be careful moving your tower with the heatsink installed, a good jolt could damage the socket/MB due to the mass of this thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars easy install; silent and cpu runs way cooler
Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2022

I recently upgraded components on my 2019 build by replacing the two intake and single exhaust fan to Noctua NF-A9 and NF-A14 fans along with the NH-U14S to cool a new Ryzen 5 5600x processor. Prior to adding the fans and replacing the stock AMD cooler, I was getting about 50C idle and about 78C with some load. The Stealth Wraith cooler was audible and I wanted a much cooler and quieter machine since this machine was located in the living room. After the upgrade, my temps at idle are between 33C and 35C and the fans rarely go above 600 RPM. When I run ffmpeg to do video encoding which uses all the 12 threads on the 6 cores, I rarely gets temps above 58C and the machine is still quiet! Amazing!

The installation was also super easy. Since it uses the standard backplate for the AM4 socket already in the board, I didn't have to remove the board. I just used the supplied mounting kit and thermal paste (thanks for including that!) and attached the cooler in place with two screws. I did use the extra cable to limit the max RPMs and keep it quieter which did not affect cooling capability for me.

I am now a Noctua fan and will be using their products in future builds as well as recommending to others!

Paired this with an Intel Core i5-4670K Quad-Core Desktop Processor 3.4 GHZ 6 MB Cache - BX80646I54670K to give you a benchmark against other processors. I also bought another Noctua 140mm Premium Quiet Quality Case Cooling Fan NF-A15 PWM and put them into a push-pull venting out the back of my case.

Performance:

On idle no cores go above 26 C. The four cores range from 21~25 per Speedfan
On moderate load (gaming), no cores go above 45 C.
Ran a video transcoding of 4 movies to downscale for tablet. Processor hit 100% usage and no core went about 45 C.
On idle, the fans drop down to under 500 RPM, which is a third of my 120mm case fans

Size:

This thing is huge. Not as big as the D14, but it's still monstrously large. Make sure your case will fit it. I bought a
Cooler Master Elite 430 - Mid Tower Computer Case with All-Black Interior and Windowed Side Panel and it's so big that it scratches the window panel. I was happy the panel just closed. I went with the venting out the back rather than the top because the orientation blocked a RAM slot. Also, due to the ridiculous size, it was hard to plug in the two system fans and the 8 Pin CPU power cable. With Noctua fans, order of installation really matters or you'll be taking parts out in your build.

Check Noctua's website for motherboard compatibility. Some motherboards have RAM issues as well as video card spacing issues. Noctua does a good job at running compatibility so that users can check before they buy.

Quality & Installation:

Solid construction, fans have anti-vibration pads, nothing here is cheap. Even the thermal paste which is arguably not as good as Arctic Silver is still very premium. The CPU cooler comes with a handy high quality long screw driver (as it's necessary to use it to install the cooler itself), extra fan mounting clips, and AMD and Intel mounting brackets. Installation is straight forward and if you've installed CPU coolers before you can probably just skip the instructions included. This was way easier than my old Zalman fan, and unlike the Zalman fan, I didn't cut myself on the blades.

Other:

Colors are hideous. Beige and brown? Ugly. But I didn't buy it for looks. I bought it for performance and I'm so far very happy. I can live with the scratches on my side window if it keeps my processor under 50 C on heavy load. The case fans themselves seem to be cooling the rest of my machine as general system temperatures are lower than my old machine.

Conclusion:

It's chilly, literally. Expensive compared to other air coolers, but in line with some of the low end and mid range liquid coolers. If you're willing to drop about $90 (Cooler + additional Noctua Fan) on an air cooler, this is a solid choice, especially if you're going to overclock later.

4.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING cooling. But AMD AM4/Asus ROG Crosshair vii owners read first!
Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2019

Build - Ryzen 2700x, Corsair ROG Crosshair vii, 32GB G.Skill 3200 RAM, 1TB EVO Pro M.2 in a Thermaltake Suppressor case. Been wanting a Noctua cooler for a while, finally replaced my stock Ryzen 2700x (beautiful RGB, but loud and average cooling with little room to OC) with the NH-U14S. Stock cooler with OC turned off would hit 65-70 under heavy load.
PROS: GREAT Cooling - Idles at 36, under full load re-encoding video with multiple filters, and with CPU auto-OCed to 4.175, now hovers around 53-56 (20+ degrees better than stock). Phenomenal build quality. ***Easy installation (see caveats below). Never felt like touching the fins would slice my fingers open. Paired with the (overpriced) Chromax cover it doesn't look ... *as* bad as other Noctuas I've installed. High quality thermal paste. QUIET. So much quiet...
***BUT***
CONS: On initial install, followed directions exactly. Used correct spacers for AM4. I've built dozens of PCs so I do know how to apply thermal paste in the right amount for different processors. Powered up and heart dropped - dreaded "error 8", which is generally an RMA for this MB. Took back apart, reassembled. Noticed that the cooler had pressed out all the thermal paste in the center, like barely a film left. Well, thinner is generally good. Figured I'd dislodged something. Reassembled with new paste application after thorough cleaning. This time got error "F9 --> 0d" - uh oh. Memory problems? Took apart, reassembled, scared I'd just killed a relatively expensive MB. This time only tightened cooler 75% of the way - booted up just fine. Temps good, cooler feels secure, no wiggle. But because I'm OCD and was willing to take a risk in order to verify it was the cooler and not my Build-Fu, did the stupid curious geek thing and turned it off, tightened cooler to stopping point per instructions, and lo and behold, error 8 again. Backed off screws to 75%, re-seated and re-pasted cooler, rebooted - all is fine. So confirmed that the AM4 spacers need to be just a smidge (maybe 1-1.5mm) bigger to avoid too much pressure on the MB. Luckily I didn't crack it or damage pins on the CPU, but needed to be sure for future builds. Also - ugly fans. Still? I get that it's your corporate ID, but there are better hills to die on than by steadfastly clinging to the "straw urine and post-salad diarrhea" color scheme. I also think it's a bit overpriced to spend an extra 20 for a cover so your cooler doesn't look like something you pulled from a 1984 Commodore product.
You want the best cooling without needing to put fluids in your case and to run dang near silent? Buy this. If you really need aesthetics you can buy the optional black fan and get the Chromax cover and spend an extra $50 for "pretty", since if you have an otherwise good looking build the stock version of this will 100% nerf that vibe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great inside Fractal 304 case w/ 6 hard drives

I have a Fractal 304 with 6 hard drives. Because of the space constraints I had opted for a H60 Corsair AIO CPU cooler. After doing my best to make this NAS a quiet and energy efficient case I decided to go all out with Noctua. Replaced both front fans with Noctua 90 regular size, along with the Back exhaust for a Noctua 140 Regular square fan. This was the moment of truth... When I got this behemoth of a CPU cooler I was intimidated. I knew it was big, so to help the space constraints I put thin L shape Sata and power cables. The results blew my mind. This thing is virtually silent. I won’t exaggerate, I can easily hear the hard drives seeking, but the constant humming cause by AIO in a push pull configuration was just too much. These hard drives are 7,000 RPM they heat up, and the space is small so I knew that the fans had to be at higher RPM’s to reduce heat. Once I got this CPU cooler from Noctua and changed factory fans for Noctua, I had so much space that I went ahead and put the extra pull fan on the CPU cooler. I have 2x 16GB ram modules by Corsair that have heat spreaders, so technically the front push fan of the Noctua CPU cooler is touching the ram, but I don’t consider this a drawback. This Noctua cpu cooler fits with both front and back fans inside a Fractal 304 case. Yes is not magic, you do have to get slim L shape wires and be extremely meticulous in order to fit 6 hard drives with this CPU cooler. I’m now getting 35c for hard drives and 31c for cpu. The fans are PWM at 30c 20%, 40c 50%, 50c 80%, and 60c 100%. This NAS is in an office with average air temp around 72 Fahrenheit. I’m extremely happy with the very low humming that lets me know that it is on. The overall wattage came down about 10 watts. I guess the AIO pump does consume more power than a fan. These Noctua fans push massive air with little effort. This cpu cooler works so well that the fans are not using the included LNA and are spinning at around 400 rpm. Because of the 6 hard drives I have to create a wind tunnel effect to remove the heat. None of my fans have the option to stop. But a constant flow of air through this case and this behemoth cpu cooler at low rpm is exactly what I need.

5.0 out of 5 stars seems okay for 5800x3d

The 5800X3D gets spicy so I probably should have spent a little more for the dual tower version, but with the fan control set to be 100% above 70c it seems to tame it and keep the chip from throttling / under 90c.

Bauldur's Gate 3 is cpu intensive and the max temp ive seen yet in game is 71c.
