Cut the cord!

I cancelled my satellite TV service, bought an HD antenna for local channels and the Roku stick. I don't pay for anything extra with it, so I can't review how it works with hulu or netflix, or any of those pay channels. I do have Amazon Prime, and it works wonderfully. There were probably three times when it froze up after watching about 3 hour-long episodes, but that may very well have been my less-than par internet service. Otherwise there have been no problems. It was simple set-up. It is much easier to do your channel choosing for loading from the computer instead of the online keyboard. Although I chose quite a few channels, I just don't watch enough TV to get in there and really check them out. The power cord could stand to be a bit longer...my big screen TV is quite a bit higher than the outlet, so I had to attach it to an extension cord. Not really a big deal. Not a good product.

The device is flimsy and did not connect well to the hdmi port. It kept losing the connection and kept rebooting. I am going to try to return after only six weeks of attempted usage. I then bought a roku 3 device which functions much better, however, I called their tech support to see if the premium program account I had from the stick would transfer to the roku 3. No luck. The guy I had on the phone, in India, then said I could get a current roku deal that offered 8 programming options including Amazon, Netflix, HBO, showtime, etc for $20.00 per month. That sounded like a really good deal so I agreed. I chose the programs after some discussion and then he told me the last options were the extended warranty and this would be included. I agreed, he said I should wait 10 minutes for the programming to load when it didn't I called back and was told there was no such deal. Their representative had misrepresented the offer. DO NOT Trust roku tech support, do not buy the extended warranty. Buyer beware when dealing with roku.

Over all this is a good device. If you've used the Roku before this is really no different except you don't have to have a box sitting next to the TV. The remote is WiFi and you can install the app for the iPhone or Android - I use an Android and it works well. You're phone has to be connected to the same WiFi as the Roku for that to work so keep that in mind.

Connecting the Roku Stick to the TV via the HDMI port is easy but keep in mind that you have to provide outside power for it. There's a USB cable that comes with the Roku that you will use to provide power. If you're TV has a USB port on it you can use that for power, if not you'll have to use the included power adapter to run it to a standard power outlet.

Besides all the standard programs that you can run I like the feature that allows you to use the Roku as a second monitor. The software still says it's Beta but it works well. It's enabled by default and if you have a Windows 8.1 computer you can easily connect your computer to the Roku and use your TV as a second monitor. That will enable you to watch other Internet only videos on your TV (Hulu has videos that for some reason you can only watch online and not through their Hulu+ app).

Overall it's a good device. I gave it a 4 star rating because I've had it freeze up a few times over the past few months bu that's mostly after it's been on for hour and I think it gets hot and starts to not work right. It may just be that my TV is causing the heat issue, I haven't dug into that to figure it out.

I'm so glad I bought this Roku stick. I had previously had a Samsung Smart Blu-Ray player, but it did not have all of the apps I wanted access too. Roku devices have access to more apps (like Netflix, Hulu, etc.) than any other smart device for TVs. The Roku stick is the cheapest option, but still has a remote and accesses all of the same apps as the Roku boxes. The Roku boxes are said to be faster, but I haven't felt that my Roku stick is slow at all. It starts up and loads things in a short amount, in my opinion. I have never felt annoyed with it's speed. I ordered the refurbished model and it has worked great for the last few months!

I feel like I grossly overpaid for the item. I haven't even hooked it up. I can buy it anywhere for $20 less including Amazon.
The model number is different but they don't explain clearly what the difference really is and whether this is an improved model or not.

I've had my Roku for months l, suddenly the remote stopped working. I thought the batteries were dead, so I changed them, but it still didn't work. I reset the roku to I see if that would fix the problem. Still didn't work, tried using the remote app on mg phone, I couldnt even connect to it. This unit was more difficult to set up than the directions showed-it may have been because of my entertainment setup-but, I had to use 4 remotes to accomplish the setup. I have also found it is not as easy to move around in the Roku home page as shown and I'm still trying to find a lot of the free stuff that is advertised.

No Vudu Button for Roku

The Roku streaming stick Vudu special edition was a total failure. Although the stick worked, the special remote with the Vudu speed button would not pair with the stick. I had to call Roku, who did replace it, with a traditional remote but instead of having the Vudu speed button, the remote sent came with the Blockbuster button which I did not want when I ordered this special edition with the remote that had the Vudu button in the first place.

Don't waste your time or money trying to get the remote with the Vudu button. Roku and Vudu obviously don't "play" well together.
