5.0 out of 5 starsPlenty of power in a size to fit small builds
Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2015
Great compact PSU. I would buy this again if I build another Mini-ITX form computer. This fit perfectly in the Silverstone case I got to go with it. It has plenty of power to run my i5 4690k with GTX-970 GPU. It's also great because it's fully modular and comes with the flexi flat cables which make building in a SFF enclosure much easier than the other braided cover types. I also bought a 430W SFX PSU which is a step down from this, but it's so close in price for less power and you get the standard cables. I have no complaints about either one and highly recommend both. They are super quiet and have more than enough power to run even an above average power gaming rig.

1.0 out of 5 starsMy PSU failed in 7 months
Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2016
Pros:
- Worked fine for the past 6-7 months.
- Simply cannot find many gold rated SFX 600W PSUs.
- Includes ATX bracket making it compatible with non-ITX cases.
- It's small, which makes cable management a bit easier in cases like the Cougar QBX. The QBX supports ATX sized PSUs, so building with this PSU will free up some space for cable management.

Cons:
- PC started shutting down when under load after 7 month mark. At first I thought my temperatures were triggering a safety shutdown, so I changed cases and switched to a closed loop for my CPU (i7 6700, no overclock), but the shut downs continued. Then I had the idea to run Prime95, then Furmark, then both together to see if I could trigger a shutdown on my own. Found that with 100% certainty running both stress tests would trigger the shutdown within a minute of starting the test. I now zeroed in on the SX600-G, so I switched to a Seasonic SSR-650RM and ran the same torture and stress tests; not a SINGLE shutdown.
- The cables are too short to reach components in the Phanteks Evolv Enthoo ITX. If you plan on using this on larger ITX or mATX cases, make sure you pack some extension cables.

Other Thoughts:
- If you read JonnyGuru and Hard OCP's review of this unit, you'll find that Silverstone skimped heavily on the capacitors for this unit, which is unforgivable for a unit of this caliber and price.
- Troubleshooting PSU problems can be a real pain unless you have the tools and know-how.
- There's a reason why this unit is scoring consistently mixed/low reviews on Newegg. Avoid it.

[Update]
It's now been over a year since I've switched PSU's and while all other components are exactly the same, I've still not experience a single shutdown ever since.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, no problems so far

Replacing the 450W version which started having stability problems after a year. I have two of these 600W versions in two different builds and so far they've been rock-solid. For a single-GPU build the 450W will work but I think the 600W gives you more safety in having a bit more headroom, and hopefully it will last longer than the 450W. Also the 600W comes with flat cables which are MUCH better than the round cables included in the 450W. It was often difficult to plug cables into the 450W but there were no such problems with the 600W. You really don't have many options if you want to do a small form factor gaming rig build other than this, the 450 and the slightly physically larger 500 from SilverStone. Luckily this is a great product, despite the lack of competition.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of the most awesome power supply's I've ever bought

This is one of the most awesome power supply's I've ever bought. In fact, I want Silverstone to make a bigger (more power) one in the same case. I had to replace a 400W flakey p.o.s. that would crash every time I put the CPU under a little load. This PS was half the size of the one I replaced in a tight Lian-Li case. Now, plenty of room to spare, and has never crashed (due to automatic motherboard protection) under heavy loads.
While other vendors offer higher watts, good luck finding a retailer that has any in stock. I wish more vendors would realize smaller is better, and retailers carry what they show. I am glad Silverstone offered a new model just when I needed it (Sept '14), and I am glad Amazon allowed me to pre-order. Compliments to both companies for fulfilling a need at a great time - maybe lucky timing, but it all worked out well for my investment.

2.0 out of 5 stars It was nice until it wasn't.

Size matters when your building a small IXT HTPC and Silverstone has the variety of small PSU's but, after less than two years the fan went out. I had a similar experience with my 450w model as well. The fan starts making noises and then after a short time the thing stops working and the PC shuts off randomly.

This is not a heavy use PC so it is not on all the time so it is frustrating to say the least. I used the 450w version in another build and the fan went out just after a year. After replacing the fan with the same model, that one quit so I installed Cooler Master fan after changing the plug and I plan to do the same with this one. The older one has been flawless after the fan upgrade.

Silverstone has always had great products I have used many times in the past so I think it's just the crappy fan's to blame. Perhaps they have already updated in newer versions, I hope.

Hope this helps.

3.0 out of 5 stars OKAY, TERRIBLE FAN
Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2015

NOT AWESOME, BUT NOT TERRIBLE. Very attractive and great first impressions. Nice cables, nice length. Nice, fully modular connectors. A little expensive, but this is to be expected for a 600W sfx, virtually no competition. Fit perfectly in NCASE M1. Powering i5 (mild OC), and r9 290x.

This seems like a great power supply but I have a of gripes. I am not sure if my experience is representative of all units. I contemplate getting a new unit via silverstone RMA often. This is my second silverstone PSU and had much better luck with the other one.

Complaint 1: I think it is great that the fan only spins up while PSU temp is low. I figured the fan would only spin when gaming, rendering, heavy multitasking etc... This is not the case, with a cold start up, sure the fan doesn't spin for awhile. Give it a couple minutes of sitting at the desktop and the fan turns on. No big deal, but the entire "Fanless Operating Mode" might be a stretch since this essentially never occurs.

Complaint 2: When the fan does decide to turn on, it takes multiple tries to spin up. It might try 10 times or more before the fan actually spins up. As you may know, the cooling fan for this PSU is voltage controlled, not PWM. It appears that when the comparator circuit decides to turn on the fan, it doesn't provide enough power to get things spinning the first several times. It gives up and tries again 5 seconds later with slightly higher voltage. Every time the fan tries to start up there is the normal whining of the DC motor, making this slightly annoying. And each attempt gets the fan closer to overcoming the current inrush requirements before finally spinning normally.

Complaint 3: The fan in this PSU seems to be terrible. If the power supply was $50 or something, i probably wouldn't mind. About 50% of the time, you can easily hear fan noises. I'm not talking about the sound of rushing air, I mean some kind of mechanical noise, like the bearings or something. It sounds like an old case fan that is 7yrs old and about to bite the dust.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quiet and efficient PSU for small builds with powerful components.

Bought for use in a Fractal Design Node 202 case, with an i5-4670K and GTX 970. The cables included are a nice length for most ITX cases, and I had no issues with them. The fan spins up only at moderate loads, and stays idle during web browsing and other minor productivity use. I've never been able to single out the noise of the fan over the other component fans in my system. 600W with 80 Plus Gold is about as good as you can ask for with the average SFF power build. Very happy with its performance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sugo SG05 owners - you have been warned...
Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2014

I was looking forward to installing this tiny beast in my SFF HTPC, which is built around a Silverstone Sugo SG05 case. It is the perfect fit for my living room entertainment center and came stock with a Silverstone SFX 450W PSU which was more than sufficient for my GTX 660 SC graphics card, Core I5 CPU and 128GB SSD. I got many hours of enjoyment from this system and now that the GTX 970 cards are out I knew I just had to upgrade. My 660 is starting to choke on some newer games like Shadow of Mordor at 1080p. I was thrilled to find a beefier 600W SFX PSU from Silverstone, and was also thrilled that it was modular. I set to work on upgrading my rig and was incredibly disappointed to find that this PSU does not properly fit the Sugo SG05 case. First off, the Sugo comes with a retention bracket that supports the PSU on the inside of the case so it doesn't sag. You CANNOT use that bracket with this PSU because the modular plugs are in the way. The other piece of the case that doesn't fit is the tray which holds the hard drive and optical drive. The back of this tray will not lay flush because of the massive bundle of wires coming out of the back of the PSU. Luckily I just have a single 2.5" SSD and for the time being have placed it carefully at the bottom of the case directly between the end of the motherboard and inside front of the case. It's not the best setup but it shouldn't move around much and maintains airflow. My other issue is the modular cables. They are ridiculously long and do not fit the small SG05 case very well at all. Further, with my minimal ITX gaming rig I needed to use ALL of the modular plugs except for one. I have tons of excess in my case, mainly the plug with SATA power connectors - there are about 6 connectors on a single modular plug! I know its a small PSU but it just seems silly to have modular plugs if you just slap a ton of connectors on one cable.

In the end my setup works OK and this PSU is more than capable of powering my new GTX 970. Time will tell if the PSU proves reliable.

Reviewing this 3 years and a few months after purchase. Reason? It died(or rather, is starting to die by randomly shutting PC down). Wanted to buy another one but realized I had previously bought the same model almost 3 years prior, and it died. Common theme is... expect 3 years and then to replace. Since there are so many other competitors in the SFX PSU market, I'm going to try elsewhere instead of paying for another 3 years.

Otherwise, runs quiet, does the job.
