5.0 out of 5 starsAmazing 80 Plus Bronze power savings, very quiet
Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2012
This is a great deal for an 80 Plus Bronze certified 500W power supply. If you are running any machines 24/7 on power supplies that aren't 80 Plus certified, let alone Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum, there are a good amount of power savings to be had. For the layman, anything labelled 80 Plus certified means it is 80% efficient at 20,50 and 100% loads. Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum are even more efficient, respectively.

I had thought that I had tuned my file/media server/video encoder to be pretty energy efficient. It consisted of an i5 2500k, 16GB DDR3, no video card, 5 WD Green drives, 3 WD Black drives, one SSD, two internal PCIE SATA 3 extenders, and a BD-R drive, running Win 7 Professional 64. It consumed about 62 Watts at idle, and 73-80 Watts under moderate load, when streaming or transcoding high bitrate 1080p video. Not bad, and about the same as leaving a single incandescent lightbulb on. All of this was powered by a several year old sturdy Thermaltake Purepower 500 (W0100RU). The old power supply was not 80 Plus certified.

I got this Corsair 500W 80 Plus Bronze power supply because the price is fantastic at around fifty dollars, and the old power supply was getting loud. I wasn't expecting phenomenal power savings, but according to my UPS wattage reading, this power supply is kicking butt! My file server now idles around 40W and operates at 56-63W under moderate load. These are big, big savings. I had no idea my old power supply was so energy inefficient. Considering the higher electricity cost in Southern California, this power supply will save me about $4 each month, possibly more if it helps prevent me from crossing into higher Tier level payments. It will pay itself off in savings within a year, and after that, will start providing me with some real savings. $4 a month in savings may not sound like much, but in a tight economy, every bit helps. On top of the power savings, this power supply is also whisper quiet.

Due to the high savings I experienced, and out of curiousity, I ordered a 400W FSP Aurum 80 Plus Gold power supply ($76), to see how much more efficient a Gold certified PSU is in relation to Bronze. Statistically, the difference should be minimal, and I have a feeling this Corsair will prove to be the highest value, in terms of cost:savings. Updates to be posted accordingly.

UPDATE 10/20/2012:

I've put this PSU up against a slightly more expensive, lower wattage, but more efficientFSP AURUM GOLD 400-Watt 80 PLUS Gold Certified ATX Power Supply Compatible with Intel Core i3 i5 i7 AU-400to compare the efficiency ratings of Bronze and Gold.

The FSP Aurum 400 80 Plus Gold came in the mail today and here are the results:
On my system, as detailed above, it idles at 32W, operates around 60W under moderate load. Very, very nice. These results are a bit better than the Corsair, as expected, but I'm going to have to stick with the Corsair as the best value proposition-- My reason being-- the Corsair is a 500 Watt power supply and supplies 38 Amps on a single 12v rail. The FSP Aurum is a 400 Watt power supply and supplies 18 Amps on a single 12v rail, but has two 12v rails for a combined 36 Amps. The Corsair CX500 is useful for a wider variety of computer uses, as the single 12v rail providing 38A meets the minimum requirements of most of today's higher end video cards, while also having great efficiency for lower power 24/7 machines like video servers. The FSP Aurum has up to 36A, but it's split into two 12v rails, and not all video cards have two plugs for power. This, along with the 400W rating mean that it is not suitable for higher end gaming computers. The Corsair's higher Wattage rating means it has a bit more headroom for high end/high power CPU+GPU combos. The price differential, for me at least, means that it would take about half a year longer to recoup the extra cost of the 80 Plus Certified Gold on the Aurum, compared with the Corsair. At the CX500's price point, it is definitely the best bang for the buck, particularly if you are coming from a PSU that isn't 80 Plus, and the machine is on 24/7.

3.0 out of 5 starsIt blew up in three months

Since I learned to build computers and looking through youtube at how other people build their computers, for some reason people always chose the Corsair brand for power supplies. I always heard good reviews and good comments of the PSU's and people favored them for being "supposedly" built not cheaply, made out of good parts and computer capacitors. Well after three months after I purchased it the PSU blew, I had let the computer on during the night because I was downloading some Steam games and was updating the some other games as well. Around 5 am this morning, I woke up to hear a huge pop, at first I thought someone from the outside had thrown something at my window and I went to look but then I smelled something burning, I then looked at my computer then I noticed the computer was turned off when I know for a fact I never put the computer to sleep. I went to my computer and noticed a little smoke had came out and the burned smell was stronger. I then opened my case up and noticed some liquid had come out of it, from the research I did, it was the liquid from the capacitors that had popped. Oh well I heard a lot of good stuff from Corsair brand name PSU's but this time it failed on me. Its sad that now I got to wait three months until I get a new PSU.

Well I got mine RMA and I'm updating my review for the second one I got from Corsair. They have pretty good customer service. Anyways I've had my second one now for almost three months, which that's how long the first one lasted. I hope this one will last longer. I'm planing on changing this one out for a new one with more watts later on this year once I get my new graphics card. So hopefully this will last till then and hopefully for a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Corsair CX 500 Power Supply

I spent a long time researching power supplies, as they are one of the more important parts of a build. They are the foundation to the theoretical house, and when building one, you want the foundation to be stable, not cheap and flimsy. This supply was perfect in price, performance, and ease of use. The sleeved cables make cable management much easier, and it fit great in my Cooler Master Storm Scout. I also liked the adaptability of the connectors, such as the 8 pin CPU power plug, which splits into 2 four pin adapters. The fan is quiet and keeps the unit cool, even though I mounted it upside down.To conclude, this was the perfect supply for my upgrading, and I would recommend this to anyone looking for a great, reliable power supply.
My current Rig (being upgraded):

PSU: Corsair Builder Series CX 500 Watt ATX/EPS 80 PLUS (CX500)
CPU: AMD Athlon II x4 645 @ 3.1 GHz
GPU nVIDIA GeForce GT 610 (upgrading to dual Radeon HD's sometime in the future)
RAM: 4 GB Kingston
Your basic 500 GB hard drive
Case: Cooler Master Storm Scout
A very generic mATX motherboard (soon to be upgraded)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Upgrade!
Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2013

Easy to Install - worked as promised - very quite once I had it in and running. It took me a little under an hour to pop the old unit out - clean up all connections and mother board - then pop this bad boy in. I took pics with my phone of all connects to help me realize what needed to align with what and what connectors went where. I am not a pro at this and I was nervous - my first time changing out a power supply actually - but it all went smoothly and the product is great. The computer issue I was having (graphics card/constant running fan) where the computer would just power off after grinding a loud fan noise for a while-was fixed with this upgrade. I had upgraded my video card and I believe after reading blogs and posts on the Net the power supply was over working and going bad. Factory power Supply is never enough for upgraded video cards. Very Happy with this company and this product.

3/9/2014 - I bought a second one to upgrade my son's computer - his computer was completely different than mine - but still same easy switch out as with mine. Both computers run cooler and quieter! Do not be afraid of this install - this product is universal and easy to install. Like I said before, I used my phone to take pictures and video of the inside connections of the existing power supply - then disconnected & removed old unit and put this new one in. You will be surprised at how easy it is and it is a great product from a good company.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works well on older machines

I was originally worried about purchasing this product because I was not sure if it would work with my old 2003 windows XP computer. The computer used an older 10 pin motherboard connection instead of the newer 14 pin connection. The motherboard fan power adapter is only 4 pins instead of the new 8 pin connector.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it did work! The connectors do hang off through, ( I have 4 pins hanging off of the side of my motherboard connector, and 4 hanging off for the fan connector). I was not sure if it would work at first. I was surprised to find out that it is the correct way to connect to old hardware.

The unit is very quiet. I was happy to find this out as I am always worried about noise coming from the fans. The only time you really hear the noise is when it does a power cool down cycle. This cycle only lasts a minute and then it goes back to being very quiet. I can hear it do this once every hour maybe.

The computer that it is in is a DVR so it is always on. So far, it has been on constantly for over 3 weeks and it is working well. There was even a lightening storm and it did not faulter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely quiet, well built power supply.

Very solid and well put together 500-watt replacement power supply for your computer. I installed it in a computer that is 4 years old and it wasn't the easiest power supply that I have replaced. No instructions included, so to make it a 15 minutes job, I labeled everything with 3M Blue tape that you are going to unplug. Remove the 3M tape when you are done.

There are also a PCI-E, ATX and EPS connector that the average person will not use.

The inputs have some special kind of see-thru shield mesh that all of the input wires have on them. This is a great quality feature; but it definitely takes up more space on the inside of the computer, it is bulkier and it took a little longer to reposition the excess inputs after I plugged in everything, as I have 2 internal fans on the inside of the computer and one directly as a part of my motherboard to keep the heat sink cool that these excess input wires cannot be near.

Also, the CPU 24 pin input that plugs into the motherboard needed to be separated at the bottom (gently pull apart) to fit my motherboard and the 8 pin black CPU input needed to be gently pulled apart into two 4 pin inputs to fit my motherboard (see the picture that I submitted). This is not a big deal, but some instructions would of saved a few minutes of my time.

Unit has three 4 pin peripheral connectors and 4 SATA inputs also.

Guaranteed for 3 years and it is rated to last for 100,000 hours- that's 11.41 years using your computer 24 hours a day. All the other replacement power supply units that I have previously purchased had a 1-year warranty. My current power supply lasted less than 2 years and it was 10 times as loud (which cost 37.99 at Computer Discounts in Toledo).

Need help installing it? I submitted a picture that may help.

This is one quiet replacement power supply, highly recommended.

I have been using this for a few months and so far no issues. It makes pretty much no noise which is a plus. It has LOTS of cable attachments for it, which is probably my only complaint. After some review I would probably not purchase this as it has so many cables that are not removable, so if I could do it again I would buy a power source that was modular. This isn't a big deal as I just have the extra cables tucked in my case but like I said this is not what I would prefer.

It is a great power supply though and has been running non-stop for months with no problems, installation was super quick and fit with the holes already in my computer. If you don't mind a few extra cables in your case or need all the cables it comes with then this would be a perfect power supply.

Bought this to replace the power supply in my older HP desktop when I wanted to upgrade the graphics card. The new graphics card (a GeForce) needed more power than the old power supply and motherboard could handle. I did some shopping around and decided on this one. It had the wattage, amperage, and the 2 PCI-E Power Connectors that the graphics card needed and was easy to install.

The Corsair name has always been synonymous with quality. I have been using their products for years, and have always been happy with the quality and performance. So far, I have never had anything breakdown or go bad, even long after the warranty has expired. This one has been running 24/7 for 5 months now, and is as quiet and stays as cool as the day it was installed.

This is my first 80 plus Bronze power supply, and I have to say the power savings is nice. I'm running 2 other older PC's that are on 24/7 (they run scientific calculations), and I'm thinking on getting 2 more of these just to make them more Green. I don't need 500 Watts of power for them, so will probably go with the 430 Watt supplies to save even more energy and thus money

Bought this for my gaming computer after needing an upgrade from an older one. My previous one had a high pitched noise whenever it was powered on which was annoying. This one is sleek, black, powerful and relatively easy to install. This thing is quiet as a mouse and I love it! I'll keep this brand in mind if I ever need to upgrade or build another gaming rig!

This is an update to my first comment about the main motherboard connector - a 24 pin with Pin 20 missing. Amazon quickly send me a replacement of the same Pin 20 missing. When I finally talk to Corsair Tech Support I learned that Pin 20 - a -5v circuit is no longer needed. This is a legacy from the ISA interface era. I proceeded to email Gigabyte's tech support to verify what the power supply unit manufacturer told me. The motherboard maker also confirmed Pin 20 is not being used. The current ATX 12v version is 2.31 and Pin 20 was eliminated since v1.2. The power supply and motherboard makers make no mention of this fact and I think they should to avoid misunderstanding. May be this is mentioned in some Archived documents but for newcomer like me I have no way of knowing.

So it's been about two months my new build Desktop is operating normally with no problem with any of the components. This PSU is very quiet. The only little sound I hear from within 3 feet in the dead of night is because I installed two 120mm LED fans in addition to stock cpu fan. During the day you can't hear it because of the ambient noise. I only give it 4 STARS because Reliability can only be measured over time, much longer than two months. So to sum it up I'm very happy with my decision to buy this power supply unit. And Corsair tech support returned my call within four hours which I considered a very good response time.
