5.0 out of 5 starsGears of War 4 is great! Micro Transactions not so great...
Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2016
I am greatfull to have gotten this game on time on October 7th. When I had a bad experience with my previous preorder of Forza Horizon 3. I was bitting my nails because I didn't want a similar experience with Gears 4 Ultimate, and thankfully I didn't this time.

The Game: Gears of War 4 is a Gears of War game. There is no major changes to the gameplay. The game is extremely fun, and the single player campaign is really fun. There are allot of fun set pieces that gives Gears 4 a more cinematic feel. Some of the great moments involve the in game weather. Other then that, I won't spoil the story for those who have not played the game.
Multiplayer is where Gears 4 shines. Horde 3.0 is fun to play with friends. I say this because the matchmaking is proving to be not so great currently. Many of the multiplayer I've played had to many people quite even before the game even starts, and the game does not fill the empty spot either with bots or another player. I am hoping this will get fixed in an upcoming update.
Graphics: The graphics are really great on Xbox One. As I said before some of the best graphics involve with the games weather. I only have an Xbox One so I can't say anything about Gears 4 HDR graphics. However I suspect it looks amazing.

Micro transactions: Gears 4 does have micro transactions and is something I disapprove when I play my games. Grears of War 4 micro transactions is a large negative mark in my book. Not only are the in game packs expensive. It also takes allot of grinding in game to even earn in game currency to purchase the packs. Not to mention there are also packs only available to purchase with real money and they are pretty expensive too. The Mcro Transactions also make my season pass feel useless because the season pass is not an all access pass. Extra in game character cost real money and can not be purchased with in game currency. The majority of in game packs offer skins for characters and weapons which does not effect the multiplayer gameplay which is a good thing. However, Horde mode packs does have in game cards that does effect the gameplay in Horde mode, and the player who has better cards gets better score when playing Horde mode.

Pros: Fun single player campaign, great looking graphics. Multiplayer is fun with friends or with a full team.

Cons: Long wait times for multiplayer match making, early quitters and the micro transactions.

Conclusion: I highly recommend Gears of War 4 to fans of Gears of War and those who have not played any Gears games. Don't let my rant about micro transactions discourage you from enjoying a fun game. This Ultimate edition does include the season pass which is cheaper than purchasing separately.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best multiplayer game on Xbox one

a great experience, you can play solo campaign or multiplayer modes. Versus modes can be player vs player or team vs the computer generated enemy. And the wildly popular Horde mode is back with some cool updates.
Campaign is single player or 2 player co op. There is matchmaking if you want a human gamer to help out. The team is 4, yourself, and 3 other characters, one of whom can be a friend or a random because matchmaking is available.
Mic use seems to be less of a "thing" this time, which is great, you just play without intrusive voices or obnoxious chatter. Since it's just two gamers in campaign there is less confusion and it's easier to manage a quick no strings attached half hour gaming session without feeling like you're abandoning a team in campaign.
Horde is classic but different. You have classes now, and choose your class according to your play style or your mood that day. You load out with different weapons depending on your class. And abilities are different class to class. Again, mics don't seem to be a real "thing" this time, great!!! The maps seem a little harder to defend and aerial assaults can be expected. Casual mode feels like normal mode in gears 3 so be prepared for a challenge.
You can revive dead teammates by picking up their COG tags (bright glowing beacons, can't miss em ) and returning then to the fabricator which is basically your "home base". That imo was a huge improvement because we've all fallen in battle, this way you get a 2nd chance to fight with your team.

Horde stands out as one of the most addictive game types out there, it fosters a sense of teamwork and accomplishment between gamers who often are complete strangers, various ages, abilities, nationalities etc etc, you fight together and as long as you aren't keeping score your team can take out 50 waves of enemies by working together. Matchmaking seems fine, there is a problem with dropout/dropoff where gamers might get disconnected and you are down a gamer or 2 or 3 which sucks but I'm NOT seeing a lot of rage quitting which is awesome.
You unlock new abilities as you level up and progress and there is a card system that you need to be patient and learn but it's not too complex and it does offer some really cool options to enhance your gameplay.and customize your character. Some of the unlock able abilities give you extra firepower or capacity or health, really valuable enhancements.

I'm loving it, they brought back the special events like gearsmas and that's lots of fun, this year we have Santa hats and Christmas skins for weapons and 3 characters get Christmas armor.

I was disappointed that this was late but Amazon made it right by giving me a free digital copy of the Ultimate Edition. It's not only a great game, but I got a free digital version that comes with Xbox and Windows 10. Love Gears 4 and Love Amazon. Been a customer for almost 2 decades. Seriously people a 1 star review due to unfortunate circumstances isn't warranted. Amazon gives us free 2 day shipping, 20% discount and they tried to make it right.

Now for the actual game. I've been a big Gears fan since the original game's release and this does the series justice while also adding to the formula and adding modern game conventions. The campaign is entertaining, with some really fun moment with the banter between the characters along with plenty of fun action moments. It's a true Gears sequel. despite The Coalition taking over development duties from Epic. Another thing to add, The new Horde Mode is super fun. They add a new fabricator that adds a new dynamic to creating a base like fortification as you try to survive each wave. VS mode is still the same but one of the nice additions is that Microsoft is hosting MP on off their Azure cloud so now there's dedicated servers to ensure a fair and stable experience for all users. With DLC and unlocks, Gears 4 had also followed Halo 5's unlockable packs that add variety to the game that you can purchase with points earned while playing or purchasing with real money if you can't wait. Otherwise maps and such will be free. I'd highly recommend this game to Gears fan and fans of crazy action games. They've stayed true to the Gears formula but still have done well to mature the franchise with this new entry. Definitely one of my favorite releases of the year.

I wish these 3 stars for me to say the game sucks, however since I don't have the game ( Thanks Amazon). 1 Star is for Amazon, 1 Star is for False Ads, and 1 Star because I feel a little betrayed. On the other hand I did play $79.99 for the Ultimate Edition, where as everyone else had to pay full price. So I guess still a good deal, I feel like Amazon owes us something for not getting to us on time. I don't really know if the game is any good though. Update, so Kudos to amazon for making good on the whole screw up thing. So now to the game itself, Graphics are as always great, sound and music are awesome too, the voice acting and story is nicely done. I felt like I played it before, basically like all other gears games, run and gun. So now the stars reflex the game, 3 star with one add for amazon bringing my total to 4 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shipping Problems Resolved

I too had the same problem. Amazon promised me delivery on October 7th, I got an email saying it would not be able to come in until next week so they will refund the shipping cost. I admit I was a little disappointed, until they sent me an email that very same night giving me the digital download codes for my Xbox. I downloaded it when I got home so I was able to play with a buddy the next day. I still am receiving the hard copy as promised Monday, and I got to enjoy the full game before it even arrived. I am very impressed with Amazon for taking the extra step and ensuring I get to play the game early. That's quality service in my book and quite frankly unheard-of in this day in age from a huge company.
Now, as for the game, you won't be disappointed with the story especially if you're as dedicated as I am with this franchise. Easily one of the best gears I have played so far. Everything from the graphics, to the voice acting, to the addition of different weapons are top notch and well thought out. Can't wait until the next Gears of War!

5.0 out of 5 stars A solid edition and new start to Gears
Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2016
Platform For Display: Xbox OneEdition: Ultimate (Early Access)Verified Purchase
Well, I admit that I was once a really hardcore fan of the Halo series. Then Microsoft gave 343 full reign of it and it's jumped the shark just about every time, or run straight into its teeth. I'm very pleased to say, Gears of War 4 does a DRAMATICALLY better job in this regard.

Now, to be fair, it's very definitely an introduction to the new series and management, for better and worse. Certain elements are a little... forced, but that should be nothing new to Gears fans: there's an unusual tendency for architects to have designed a lot of strangely waist-high little structures in their buildings, somehow deep holes can be plugged by grenades, and everything can be chainsawed except the things that should be.

But, on the other hand, the characters are solid, the dialogue is fantastic in purest Gears tradition, and they actually manage to convey some emotional impact without being heavy-handed on relying on expanded universe lore that most players will never know (looking at YOU, 343...). The multiplayer is still Gears, which I've never been a fan of, but plenty of people enjoy it. I came back more for the Horde mode, and it's been worth it so far, although I miss some of the more absurd enemies and panic that came in Gears 3.

The single biggest gripe I have about it is that you only have two-player co-op in campaign. I understand, having completed it, why they chose to do that, but they easily could have allowed for more players, at least most of the time. Ultimately though, I'd say I prefer having NPCs doing more menial tasks (such as holding down a switch) that would have otherwise been done by a player.

Overall, if you're already a Gears fan, you're probably going to love this game. If you're not, I don't think there's anything here that will draw you in.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazon customer service saves the day!

what can I say, Amazon comes through again and again. I, like many others it seems, did not get all the promotional material promised for those that pre-ordered the game. After realizing I was missing a few of the pre-order codes I reached out to Amazon to investigate. I was met with wonderful customer service from the start, and by the end, all of the issues I had were resolved. In this day and age when there are so many options to buy, customer service is what separates the good from the bad. Never once did Amazon question my concerns, only asked how they could help. Its a lesson that certain brick and mortar stores could learn. As for the game itself; its outstanding. If you were a fan of the original and subsequent sequels, you will truly enjoy this new chapter on the next gen. The visuals are incredible, and the gameplay is top notch. Multiplayer is a blast, and the inclusion of the credit system really keeps you vested in playing so you can grab all the customizable options. A 5 star game, and a 5 star Amazon experience.

1.0 out of 5 stars Shameless. Thanks, Coalition... DO NOT BUY THIS EDITION.
Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2016
Platform For Display: Xbox OneEdition: Ultimate (Early Access)Verified Purchase
So yeah, the cover shooting is fine/fun, but this is one shameless cash-grab... With somehow WORSE graphics than Ultimate.

Be wary, some spoilers below so read on at your own discretion.

The campaign is a pretty big disappoint to say the least. Yes, the combat is solid (as Gears has always been) and it thankfully went back to the old control scheme instead of Judgment's butchery of it. However, while the action is once again entertaining, plot-wise, it's a travesty of storytelling with large amounts of holes, questions that the developers don't even bother answering (let alone attempting to give hints on) and imperative plot points for understanding the new Sera, new characters and The Swarm that are completely swept under the rug. Of course, the reasoning behind this is that The Coalition doesn't want to tell a great narrative now; they want to franchise it for as long as possible and come up with resolutions as they're allowed to make sequels. Guys, a constant slew of unaddressed questions is not a story and a cliffhanger is not an ending (it should only be part of). And speaking of the "ending"; it's terrible. It feels like the game is just getting started (especially when you consider where the finale takes place) and then, after a 2-3 minute cutscene, it cuts to black with next to nothing having been accomplished and learned. There's not even a main villain or anything (the guy it sets up to be a primary foe is dispatched earlier on and doesn't even have a name in the game) What's even more shameless is that, to get information on the narrative (beyond, you know, the damn game), you have to go online to something like Wiki as the game doesn't even do its job of informing you. For anything more, you have to wait another decade (for two more games plus DLC) to just understand base information that they should have been telling you now like:

-Why does JD hate Marcus and why did he seemingly abandon him? (of course, we could infer, but tell us what happened!)
-Why does JD hate Baird?
-What happened to Anya and how did she die?
-What is Jinn's motive and why does she just disappear during the last act?
-Why do JD and the outsiders hate Jinn and their seemingly peaceful society, but still want to loot and attack their settlements?
-Why in the world would Reyna's mom lock she, JD and Del in a shed when The Swarm attack AFTER she just had you save the ENTIRE village from a DeeBee attack? These are your best proven fighters! (Okay, so that was just really bad writing/a plot hole, but still).
-How can the Swarm hack robots with quills? And if they can, why aren't they hacking the DeeBees later in the game instead of fighting them? Seems like a waste of a randomly-generated enemy trait.

These are just a minimal amount of major plot threads that are just shrugged off in favor of further franchising, like Halo 5. And no, to everyone gibbering away that they're just setting up for the DLC and sequel and yadd-yadda-yadda----NO. This is flat-out bad writing and bad storytelling. Give us something!

The Swarm are also kinda just dumb. They don't look interesting, hardly have any diversity and the "Scions" just look nonthreatening with their too-dimwitted/human faces. There's potential for them, but the game gives no depth to them or their purpose other than harvesting.

The characters are also grating. JD is alright, but the "humorous" dialogue is near non-stop and most of it is the trio not taking anything seriously, making jokes and speaking solely in sarcasm. Yes, the original games had this, but in this one, it's so incessant and so cringe-worthy that it's just obnoxious. There's simply a time and place for everything and this one has these infants copping jokes around a mutilated body they just discovered. That and they act like brats and treat Marcus and Baird like crap. Reyna even has the audacity to speak down to Marcus at one scene where all he's trying to do is talk sense.

Multiplayer is alright but it doesn't 'feel' like Gears of War combat. It feels like a Call of Duty interpretation. Again, it does Gears' gameplay, but in a Call of Duty-esque way. Now, everything's about loadouts, temporary cards you can equip and "zombie" characters (like COD) that look pretty stupid. I really liked unlocking the character models in old Gears games and the ones in this are just lazy (color-splattered? Seriously? Gimme a Theron, please). Worse, multiplayer is utterly mutilated with micro-transactions. There are seriously 3 forms of currency and getting credits isn't a grind, it's an absolute slog. Worse, when you actually get enough credits to buy one of the packs, it's completely random whether or not you'll receive anything worthwhile. 99% of the time, you receive the lamest gun skins or experience cards--and even doubles at that in the SAME PACK! Even worse (yup, it does get worse) I now have doubles (and even one TRIPLE) of cards that the game won't let me "scrap" for currency to buy another skin instead. Now, I have decks of cards that are literally unusable. It's revolting, it's disgusting and it's even gambling. They literally force you to gamble on stupid slots. Funny, considering all those gamers who got busted on COD for gambling because they were actually EARNING money by playing--and the ol' government came down on them for. BUT NO, it's totally okay for AAA game companies to extort and pocket money if they're the ones forcing gamers to gamble. Insane. Also, the season pass was utterly worthless as it doesn't come with ANYTHING that would/should come in a season pass. Oh, the new characters/Run the Jewels box or the MLG loot box??? NOPE! Gotta pay extra even though you already shelled out $100 (not that I care for the character models, but still, it's principle). Of the loot I got with the $100 edition, I got nothing worthwhile but several "pine" skins for guns that look as stupid as they sound. So what do you get with this edition? Kinda-sorta early access (one week before they're released for free) to multiplayer maps that can only be played on the developer mode.

As for guns, the DeeBee weapons are actually the most fun (the Overkill and Embar). However, most of the time, I just used the original lineup of guns as I feel they're more effective. The Dropshot is annoying as it sometimes works really well and sometimes explodes directly next to someone and does... Nothing. The Buzzkill is stupid fun, but like the Dropshot I never bothered to use it beyond its introductory use (as it's slow to start firing and needs to be used from a static position). The Markza is okay, but when you already have a sniper and lancer/hammerburst, it's kinda void.

Music is also severely lacking when it should be used during cutscenes. One "emotional" moment is rendered "meh" by the complete lack of a sympathetic song (think The Coalition trying to replicate the Maria scene from Gears 2 but without memorable music and/or emotional investment from the player--as again--it's taken no time to explain why we should care about these new characters).

As a fanatic of all things Gears (except that crap one Judgment), I find Gears 4 to be decent mindless fun, but a slap in the face as well for those who have supported the series. It's clear the people involved (and still are from previous games) needed Cliffy B. to guide them and really don't understand their fan base nor what makes a game great. It's a AAA title all the way in that it's a microtransaction-filled cash-grab made for the general public first and fans secondly.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing price/deal but fun Horde (even w/poor skill implementation)
Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2016
Platform For Display: Xbox OneEdition: Ultimate (Early Access)Verified Purchase
Disappointing overall, I give it 2 stars for the average player and 3 for the fan of story and/or horde (vs, I leave to the hardcore vs people).

Season pass was/remains a joke, they put map limits in to attempt to justify its existence. The $$$ price and just throwing card packs at the game owner = LAME.

Enjoying it with my wife since GoW3, it is very unfriendly to 2 or more people same xbox. Preorder bonus only sole owner, so I could play Marcus but no Ana for wife. All cards only for owner too - why not ANY core skins and abilities, bounties shared, just dumping it on the profile installed? Those preorder ones can't be made meaning you will generally never have any other player having access to them. GoW3 and even GoW:J were so much more giving with shared content and unlockable in game skins and content on same Xbox.

If you're still a Horde or Story fan I think you might get a 3 out of it, even tho former short and latter makes you play a RNG slot game they'd rather get $$$ from you for. With bad odds and a lot of duplicates and the fact you cannot create a card you haven't yet received (something the Dev doesn't talk about even in their mini tutorial) it is a challenge and a haul to play how you want. No mutators here - grind and pray to RNGesus.

After you big initial purchase (up to $100 premium) you feel like you're playing a freemium with all the for sale only options - halloween, esports, and 'run the jewels' whomever they are (sorry, shrug) all using real $$ and no in game, AND first 2 maps we payed for being GoW3 remakes, there has been a lot of backlash. The 10th anniversay was a good event and supposedly christmas event will have the ability to purch with credits, we'll see.

So there remains some goofy things (eg private horde stays online and will afk kick, private vs cant get xp but that's the only way to use your bought maps? wtf...) and some unfortunate design choices (bizarro horde progression, no unlockables through gameplay at all).

I'm also still a bit surprised bounties are something you buy in game/real $, just have quests/bounties available like every other game I've enjoyed. Oh the lameness...

Still if you like the old school.. well you'd probably be better served just playing those games. That tagline of 'best since GoW1' is such a joke, sorry. I'd give them best since GoW:J.. lol.. or maybe those two go head to head. It'd be close honestly, so far I'd give it to GoW:J.

Such potential but money grab moves really gutted this one. See how it develops but holiday buyer beware. I already saw a month after release the price on the ultimate edition drop to the regular edition, that tells you something. At least you'll get a better deal than us saps who wanted to support the new game and TC and gave them the benefit of the doubt. Oops. We know now.
