How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

I have slightly wavy, very fine but extremely thick (as in, individual strands are fine, but I have a very high density of individual hairs on my head, and, no, the hairs being fine doesn't seem to make it dry any faster), waist length hair that I blunt cut because only a sociopath would put layers in hair this thick. I've tried porcelain dryers, tourmaline dryers, blow dry accelerants, microfiber towels... it still keeps me around 40 minutes to blow dry it completely (I admit my skill set is lackluster, as I so seldom bother to blow dry it at all). The lady who cuts my hair has a flag on my account so that when I schedule an appointment, they add an extra 15 minutes to the standard 1 hour appointment so she can have enough time to dry it (she is faster than I am, maybe 20-30 minutes for her, I've never actually timed it). She always asks if I want her to take weight out of my hair (basically drag the scissor edge through it to thin it out to normal-person thickness; I do not do this). Once, when I was at a hair salon as a first time customer to get a trim, the stylist realized she'd never get my hair dry in time for her next appointment, so she recruited one of the other stylists to blow dry my hair with her-- one on each side of me, blow drying simultaneously. Hopefully I've illustrated my point sufficiently.

I deliberated about this thing for a while. I essentially don't ever blow dry my hair because it takes so long. The, "I went from 15 minutes to 5 minutes," people, the normal-range hair thickness ones, the ones who think that shoulder-length hair is long hair-- they don't understand what it's like for girls like me. I am not interested in what they have to say about a hair dryer. A girl I worked with owned this and said it dried faster, but she has shoulder length hair that is maybe 1/4 as thick as mine. I remained skeptical. I left most of the packing intact when I finally bought it, fully expecting to have to return it after verifying that it does not work for my hair.

With this dryer, my hair was completely dry in less than 15 minutes (approximately 13). It doesn't feel fried or damaged. It put off less heat (though still enough for me to sweat a bit) than my old dryer. It is quieter than normal dyers. I'm not proud of the fact that I now own a $400 hair dryer (with a $50 carrying case to protect it), but... I'm not giving this thing up.

Now to see if it stops working after 6 months...

3.0 out of 5 starsI like the dryer for almost as many reasons as I hate it, but it is cool and I have disposable income ...
Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2017
THE LIKES
Honestly, I like the dryer the most for these three qualities, starting with the most liked: quietness, dynamic heat adjustment, magnetic attachments.

The unit's super quiet. The motor sounds almost identical to my Dyson hand-held vacuum's motor, so I giggled a bit the first time I turned it on, thinking how funny drying my hair with a vacuum was ... but I digress.

If you bring the unit too closer to your head, it does eventually adjust temperature. Sometimes, it gets too hot and then suddenly changes temperature. I know it's not able to read the future—version 2.0 might—but the adjustment does work fast enough.

It's also worth noting that the attachments are made out of some sort of heat "resistant" material, which makes them a hell of a lot easier to swap out in the middle of the drying process than traditional ones. Traditional ones are like handling a hot coal from the grill ...

The attachments also work via magnets, which makes total sense now that I think about it. Good job Dyson. Your engineers have good thinkers, I reckon!

THE HATES
I absolutely hate this dryer for three reasons, starting with the most hated: the cord, user interfacing, portability/travelability.

The plug looks like you're pugging an industrial air-mover into an outlet (except for some reason with a GFCI breaker at the end of the plug) ...
The cord, while soft and supple, is also thick and sometimes can be hard to manage.

Setting different speeds and heat settings traditionally are found on the handle of the dryer. This unit uses static buttons to control the heat and fan speed states. You need to cycle through the states by pressing the individual buttons, so it's difficult to know which heat you're on without looking at the unit.
Traditional blow dryers make it obvious by the physical position of the rocker switches.
Granted, the state of the speed is a lot easier to tell (if you have a functioning autonomic nervous system, that is).

Dyson does give you a (hilariously pink) case to put the dryer in. I have a tough time fitting all the crap in there—including diffuser and other magnetic attachments). It's almost impossible to travel with this blowdryer so I never do.

The poor thing is relegated to the bathroom, sheltered from all the Marriotts and Sheratons throughout the US.
... and definitely never to see a Westin in France: I don't think this unit supports all the different voltages found throughout the world's wall sockets.

Also, why is all of this packaging necessarily pink? For marketing reasons, it unfortunately makes *some* sense (though I disagree with it), but really society? Really ...?

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing product
Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2020
Color: White/SilverVerified Purchase
I got this for a birthday gift from my wife. It is amazing. It dries my hair quicker than any hairdryer I have ever used. I love the ability to adjust the temp of the heat with multiple options. This is a novel function. Like most hairdryers you can also adjust the power of the drying function. With other hairdryers I have used the highest power but this one I only need the 2nd to the highest power.

There are 2 small features I think they could improve on slightly. Neither would impact my decision to buy this product again. One is that on 2-3 occasions my finger has accidentally hit the power button when blow drying my hair. This is out of the numerous times I've used it so not a big deal but could be something they address in a future version. I have larger hands so it may not be an issue for someone with average or smaller hands. The other is the power cord is substantially longer than I need. So to keep it from getting everywhere I have tied it up. The only downside is that it creates a heavier cord that i have to hold up while using the hairdryer. It is a very light hairdryer so I lose some of the benefit of the lightness by dealing with the cord. Neither of these 2 issues would in any way prevent me from purchasing this again.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Vertu-Phone Version of Hair Dryers - Just Without Precious Gems or Metals
Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2019
Color: White/SilverVerified Purchase
I love this hair dryer as much as one can love a hair dryer. But to be honest, for travel, it is slightly impractical. It has a thick, long power cord and a rather large power converter brick about 12 inches from the plug (instead of a giant brick connected to the plugs pins (even though it still has a small brick there). So even though the non-L-shaped frame of the dryer would appear to be more travel friendly than an L-shaped dryer, it still takes up some space in luggage.

It has really strong magnetic accessory add-ons, which I think is a nice touch. The heat, fan speed, cool, and power buttons are sleek and solid, while the LED indicators are aesthetically pleasing. The unit's really long cord has led me to wrap it around my medicine cabinet so it always out and ready for use. I keep it plugged in, but due to a small hum from the converter box when active, I just hit the yellow power kill switch when not in use.

It leaves my hair looking and feeling better than any other dryer I've ever used. I never feel like I'm frying my hair, even on the highest heat (as long as I keep it moving). Because of this feeling, and the convenience of keeping it always at the ready without taking any counter space, and the fact that it looks/feels cool and expensive, I'm giving it 4.5 stars and rounding up.

I did take it on one European vacation, but was unable to use it with either of my power converters (one with voltage compensation and one without). That was a little bit of a buzzkill, but I love it at home so much that I don't feel it's worth knocking off a star.

I would say the price is ridiculous, but since I got it as an Amazon Warehouse deal, it was slightly less ridiculous, therefore 4.5 stars is justified.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing dryer, super quiet and dries well. Get it!!!

I love this dryer! It definitely takes some getting used to. It is much more quiet than your standard hair dryer which I love. The air that comes out is crazy fast. It blow dries my hair in half the time. I love that the temperature adjusts so it feels like you aren’t frying your hair. The cord is thick and heavier than usual, but it honestly doesn’t bother me. The cord wraps well and the dryer stores away nicely - very compact. Drying my hair used to be something I hated - now it’s not a chore and my hair feels super soft and healthier. I’ve used this daily since I received it and it has performed very well. I’m a Dyson believer now! Well worth the investment and wish I ordered sooner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, quality product that gives “fresh out of salon” look to hair every time!
Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2019

After months of researching and weighing in my options, I pulled the trigger and splurged on this hair dryer.
Several factors drove my decision- as this is a long term use product and I wanted to enjoy it.
After having it for 4 days now I am very happy with this hair dryer. It is quieter than any other on the market, it is very easy to handle and use and it gives me that “fresh out of salon” feeling consistently this far.
I will write an update in a couple of months as I do with most big ticket items.
I’m a very happy buyer and will recommend this product to friends and family. Of course the price point makes it not as easily affordable for a lot of people, but given the fact that I wash my hair daily and blow dry it every time, it was a very justifiable investment for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing blow-dryer

Best blow-dryer. It's expensive, but does a fantastic job. It's lightweight so easier to use. I love that the filter is at the bottom of the handle. It makes it so my hair doesn't accidentally go into the filter and burn. (I have had that happen-just a couple strands).
It is loud but what blow-dryer isn't? It dried my hair much quicker, which made it nice for time management. The settings are nice. I like the design overall and came with a diffuser. Which I need when I get my wavy hair curly. Overall amazing blow-dryer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lives up to the hype, but one small nit to pick...

This is a great hair dryer. The best. Really. It's like Hawaii, and you think it won't live up to the hype, but then you go there and you never want to leave. Anyway, it dries hair.

But, and I returned the first one and the second does it too, it produces a high pitched buzz. It's not super loud, but if your bathroom (or whatever room you dry your hair in) is close to your bedroom, you'll definitely unplug it before trying to sleep.

Love love love this hair dryer. I wish I knew about the product a long time ago, will definitely never go back. Its much quieter than a typical dryer. It also dries hair a lot faster than any of dryer I’ve had and I’ve been through lots! The only thing I don’t really like is that the cord is so long but nonetheless love this dryer!! It is expensive but you will not regret this purchase!

3.0 out of 5 stars I really love this dryer, but it has a couple of flaws
Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2019
Color: White/SilverVerified Purchase
I actually started out at 4 stars when I started this review but, as I wrote it, I realized it actually deserves 3.

I wanted to wait a few months after really giving this dryer a chance to be used and I really, really love this dryer so long as I'm using it at home. It dries my hair way faster than other dryers and is comfortable to hold in my hand and when my hair does dry, it feels soft and silky as opposed to overly dry or crispy like it has with other dryers. That said, traveling with this thing is a nightmare. I travel a lot for work and was excited at the prospect of having a dryer that was easy to travel with but still great quality.

First off, if you travel internationally like I do, you can't use this dryer in countries with different voltage, even with the proper adapters. I brought it all the way to Europe only to find out that it was essentially dead weight in my luggage.

My second issue is the cord. It's long, thick, and has a power brick built in. I get that it needs a lot of power, but it's a serious nuisance when you're trying to put it away or travel with it. There's no wrapping it around the dryer itself or neatly putting it away because the brick gets in the way and the thickness makes it unravel immediately anyways. Sometimes, even when I'm using it, the brick will slide off the counter and pull down on the dryer making it heavier and more uncomfortable.

The dryer component is amazing, and I really, truly love it for that, but at the price tag and with my experiences with Dyson's other products, I expected more attention to detail and consideration for how this product would be used by it's customers.
