1.0 out of 5 starsSTAY AWAY, quirky and you get no help from Lifx!

As a professional technology reviewer I can usually work my way around any new product; that is until I tried these Lifx bulbs.

Allow me to give you a list of problems and quirks the system has.

1-The light constantly drop off from the app and you can no longer control them. You turn the light on manually, turn it off from the app and it works for only a day and drops out yet again.

2-The schedule/timer system usually fails to work. Lights do not turn on or off as they are supposed to.

3-Very often lights will not accept firmware updates. It shows a red x and says update failed!

One thing you should be aware of is customer service or the lack of it. You must fill out these long forms to tr y to explain your problem. The worst part it NO ONE EVER ANSWERS YOU! What good is sending in trouble reports if no one reads them or responds to you. If you purchase a Lifx bulb and need assistance, forget it! No phone number, no one to talk to and no response to your query.

Never again will I purchase a Lifx product, and if you take my advice, don’t buy them either. What kind of company gives you no support or care about your problems.

Take my advice, STAY AWAY FROM LIFX! You’ll be happy you did.

5.0 out of 5 stars These are a blast! I never thought I'd say that about lightbulbs..
Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2018

I purchased 2 of these, as well as Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance Kit , which included 4x Gen 3.0 (glass) bulbs.

The Lifx+ Bulbs definitely seem superior in my honest opinion. They are brighter, the color range seems wider, and the color temperature calculation is more accurate IMO. I also like the shape better, though I can see how the Hue bulbs may fit better in some fixtures, this isn't a problem for me.

I have been working to program a piece of software to run my house lighting. I have this program syncing with f.lux, so the color temperature is always correct with the day night cycle, while also keeping it in sync with my monitor's color temperature. This has been working pretty great so far, but honestly I've found the Hue API to be a bit better. Lifx offers a LAN API, but it is a bit primitive. The other API uses web requests, which take a second or two to process. Thanks to Hue's bridge, the API calls are a bit quicker and more reliable. This isn't a huge issue though, as the Hue bulbs respond in about 1 to 2 seconds, while the Lifx bulbs respond in 2-4 seconds. The wait time is no issue for me. The Lifx APIs are still very capable, and very easy to use. My only real complains are the delay, as well as the random "429 Too many requests" error, despite me being no where near the advertised rate limits. I'm using the same software to control both my Lifx and Hue bulbs, and I'm monitoring my web requests very closely. I make about 2 requests per minute on average, never exceeding 20 requests. The API documentation states "Currently, each access token is limited to 120 requests for a 60 second window", but somehow I keep getting the 429 error randomly.

Other than the API issues which are admitted a niche concern, I've had absolutely no issues with these bulbs.

All in all, I had no idea I could have so much fun with a lightbulb..

4.0 out of 5 stars Great bulb if you need a dual purpose solution. IR source is 940nm.
Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2017

Overall this is a great light. I have a unique lighting situation from what I found and this serve its purpose. The light is bright and has a wide gamut of colors. I installed 2 of these and the app installation was easy at first but I could not get it to connect to Alexa. I noticed in the Lifx app it said the cloud was disconnected, but I was logged into the app and did the setup procedure as instructed. I almost put it away in disappointment when I decided to reset the bulb and try an install a second time. This time it worked and it linked it to the cloud. Alexa was able to find it and now controls the bulb with no problem.

So I set up a 2nd bulb and the installation was much easier and worked flawlessly. If you install this bulb in a lighting fixture, you need to make sure it stays powered on, or else the IR will not work and the bulb will not connect to wifi. I installed mine in a socket connected to a light switch and can turn the light on and off with the switch without losing power to the bulb. To do this I did the following:

1. Installed a z-wave light switch.
2. Connected the lead and load wires together and connected them to the Z-wave lead(hot) terminal, so the light remains on all the time. The z-wave switch will continue to toggle its status.
3. Installed the Lifx bulb and app
4. Connect switch and bulb to a smart hub(i.e. Vera, smartthings, etc..)
5. Set bulb to toggle on and off in sync with switch. (create a scene or smart app in hub)
6. Viola!!!!!!!! Enjoy!! So far it works like a charm.

IR
The IR light works when the light is powered off through the app or other remote device. If the bulb power is cut the bulb will not work. But when power is reapplied it will turn on to its last lighting state. Once the light is off the IR turns on automatically. It works on a wave length higher than 940nm meaning it can not be seen by the naked eye and there is no noticeable red glow like IR bulbs on surveillance cameras. Those are generally around 850nm. If your camera is not IR sensitive to 940nm then it will not work. In my experience with this bulb the IR worked well and served its purpose in my application. I noticed the IR light source is more intense coming from the top of the bulb rather than the sides and is not as even as the actual visible light from the bulb. But if you needed a bulb with a dual purpose then this is a winner.

Pros:
1. Light works well and has a good strong signal to my wifi router
2. Does not require a hub to connect
3. Wide color gamut.
4. Fun quick settings and scenes in the app (like flicker, strobe, music sync.)
5. IR works well with IR enabled cameras sensitive to 940nm
6. Works with Alexa, Vera, Smartthings, Nest, IFTTT..........

Cons
1. App is a little buggy. The app froze a couple of times while circling the color wheel. I saw this on a video review and they had the same results.
2. Setup wasn't perfect. I don't know why it did not connect properly the first time but after a reinstall it worked fine.
3. Pricey..The closest competition to these are the Phillips hue color bulbs which are cheaper but require a hub. But hue does not have the IR feature(yet).

Overall this is a good bulb if you find you need a dual purpose solution.

I started with one. Currently I have 12. These things are awesome in my opinion. Besides the multitude of colors and, the different whites, when I use them for photography, It's super easy to set them up to match the color of my video and strobe lights They were having some issues with the application at the beginning of the year but, they seem to have finally got that fixed. The app and the widgets work great on my LG V20, LG x10.1 tablet and there is also an app on the microsoft store also that works great on my pc's. No hub needed for these babies. Plus they work great with either Alexa Dot or Google Home. And if you use video surveillance for your kids room or anywhere in the house, you can set them up to have infared when you turn the lights off All that and you set different timers, different themes, and you can also make them work as strobe or party lights that follows your music

5.0 out of 5 stars Jetson's eat your heart out - we’re living in the future now! And it has night vision!

Much like the LIFX, the LIFX + has all the next level color, brightness and awesome functional features of its sibling. If you want my thoughts about all that stuff see my review on the new LIFX A19. In summary, they’re great. 5 stars.

Now, the LIFX +. I liked the idea (it’s a bit crazy James Bond tech feeling) and hey, I was getting LIFX anyway so figured I’d get a mix. The main difference is that the + have a whole added channel of light for ‘night vision enhancement’. Whenever the bulb is not set to visible light it puts out infrared that is invisible to the eye (it also switches it on when they’re set to super dim).

Why did I bother? Well… Have you ever been lying in bed at night and then there is a creepy noise? You and your significant other have a bit of a “debate” over whether or not it needs investigation or who will go check and you're kind of freaked out? Solution: just set up some little cams at key locations in your house, along with a couple of these babies and use an app to check from bed. And if there IS someone lurking about just turn all the LIFX in your house on red with said phone and totally scare them off! Problem solved.

Yes, cameras do work without LIFX + boosting the vision but I figured I’d rather upgrade the lights and have fewer cams as that was less 1984-esque. Another thing I've noticed from my testing so far is that the super infrared makes windows really easy to see through (normally hard with cameras at night) and lights up all those weird nooks and creepy, dark halls in older places so it is a big improvement on just the camera alone.

Some potential bonus uses that might add some value: hilarious night time pet antics captured, proof there aren’t ghosts in your house, know who is raiding the fridge, watch your baby sleep, see who’s stealing your paper at dawn… the list goes on.

In summary: this is already a 5 star product but with super innovative functionality added in that you can’t get in other smart lights.

It's easy to use with Siri Shortcut. I setup automation to turn on/off the light when I come/leave the house in Siri Shortcut. So far it's been great. Has many nice theme colors, some of them really nice. Overall I love it, wish it was cheaper so I could replace my entire house lights with these.

3.0 out of 5 stars So promising, but in the end just OK due to flaws
Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2017

The packaging is nice. The LIFX app is clunky and has some nits. The programmed themes are fun, how they coordinate among multiple lights. Activation of the IR illuminator isn't documented; the app shows its status as a little eye icon that's bright or dimmed (but how would one know that's its purpose?), and there's no way to disable the IR illuminator other than increasing the visible light beyond ~8% intensity (or completely cutting power to the bulb of course).

Below the 4000K setting for programmed shades of "white", the coloration on objects is too orange--significantly oranger than a fixed-color soft white CR80+ bulb of comparable temperature. The A19 model does not illuminate isotropically, with most of the light going one way, through the flat head. The BR30 model isn't a reflector at all either and loses a lot of its brilliance to the sides; its use as a typical flood light isn't good, because it wastes light to the sides and you will see the bulb from almost any location, whereas a normal flood light saturates its subject and is essentially invisible when standing behind it.

The bulbs only support Wi-Fi over 2.4 GHz.

About power usage... The power factor is about 0.86, which is good/expected for a quality LED. The IR illuminator consumes ~6 watts at the premises or 6/0.86 = ~7 watts at the power station. Peak energy consumption is about 9 watts at the premises or 9/0.86 = 11 watts at the power station. Green is the most energy efficient color, consuming only about 2 watts at peak brightness for the color. Red and blue consume about 6 watts; the combination purple consumes ~7 watts at the premises. Since IR can't be disabled and consumes 6 watts, the lowest power configuration is to set the bulb to green at about 10% intensity, such that the IR doesn't waste energy during the day. The wasted energy could add up to $6 or more per year per bulb.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great product if it were reliable
Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2017

The device is great when it works, but is unreliable enough that we had to stop using it. I only purchased this one light as a test to see if LIFX is the ecosystem I want to buy into. Since the test bulb failed, I'm going to give another company a shot.

This light is very customization, requires no hub, and is easily integrated into home systems with IFTTT. However, the bulb disconnects from my home network constantly. After it disconnects, it does not reconnect without a hard power cycle (unplug the lamp from the wall and plug back in). Even a power cycle doesn't always bring back the light.

The light typically remains connected for 3-4 hours, however it always disconnects within 6 hours and sometimes disconnects within 10 minutes. When it disconnects, it freaks out by strobing random colors for a few second intermittently before settling back to the default white. After that, it is unresponsive and not seen on the network.

I gave it a few weeks with multiple configurations to see if it was something in my network causing the problem. My wireless access point is 5 feet away from the light and the only partial obstruction is the lamp shade. I tried putting the wireless access point directly under the light to bypass the lamp shade obstruction with no change in failure rate. My wireless access point says it can handle 100 simultaneous connections and I have less than 16, so it is not a limit on my wireless access point. My network is configured to offer 254 ip addresses, so it is not my DHCP. I am a network technician by trade, albeit focused on large WANs and have little patience for advanced networking at home.

I also removed all of my IFTTT applets from the lights just in case they were causing conflicts. This had no effect. I have a LIFX Z strip in the same room that has no problems remaining connected. I am a bit sad to move to another smart bulb eco-system while keeping the LIFX Z strip, but I'll figure that out.

I am aware that this error is not typical and a replacement would likely resolve this issue. However the return process for me is long since I'm overseas and therefore more time "expensive". I intend to use these lights at a family event in 30 days and don't to risk a second failure.

4.0 out of 5 stars LIFX is second in the smart bulb game
Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2019

If you just need one bulb, this is the one. But LIFX is challenging to scale. Deciding to dip my toe, I started with a Hue pack, a few LIFX bulbs, and some third-tier bulbs (Senegal and Govee). At first, LIFX was my top choice for lack of hub. after setting these up, clearly that's not a benefit–it's a deficit. LIFX bulbs must all be set up individually, including wifi. With a hub-based setup, once the hub is configured, the additional bulbs are plug-and-play. Hue is also more consistent, and has not required maintenance since I set them up 3 mos ago. The LIFX bulbs periodically become unresponsive and need to be rebooted. Of the 4 LIFX I have, I would guess that I've had to reboot one per week in the last 3 mos. I have very strong signal in the house, with Eero mesh. In general, LIFX products do have better potential than Hue, for example, the LIFX light strips can display gradients, and this particular bulb is something you will not find with Hue–this fills the room with 930nm IR (invisible, no subtle red) when "off". This is great for security cameras, and why I will be keeping my LIFX bulbs.
