5.0 out of 5 starsAmazing motherboard with focus on quality, PCI slot strength stronger than my 400+ dollar boards!
Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2017
I wanted to test this board and keep it in my main rig due to the Aorus 1080ti Xtreme that I acquired. Below are my thoughts after testing different modes on this motherboard.

Pros

- The build quality is superb it's not how some manufactures just say that they have a great product with amazing quality to hook you, this motherboard is really built with care.

- Installing the drivers was very easy, the motherboard is very windows 10 friendly. We did not test any other OS.

- Let’s retouch on build quality, I have motherboards that are over 400+ dollars that can’t hold the weight of some of my graphics cards. This motherboard has metal built into the pci slots to give it some great strength.

- Software wise the motherboard software barely brings any useless bloatware, everything works well, the software is just an extra like to over clock and such. Really, I didn’t find any bloatware installed when installing the motherboard app center.

- I do really enjoy the RGB settings available on the motherboard there is one con which will be listed. I found it easy to sync the motherboard lighting with the Aorus graphics card lighting since they are from the same family of products.

Cons

- The Aorus Fusion team will need to work on making other companies RGB hardware like RAM from G.Skill compatible, so you can sync everything together with ease. I chose to set my G.Skill RGB to a set color to avoid it looking out of sync.

- At this price point if 2 more USB 3.0 were included it would be perfect but really it’s only a small con.

1.0 out of 5 starsGreat motherboard, terrible audio.
Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2017
Audio crackle!

I've had no other problems with this motherboard after a month or so, but the sound crackles constantly when using 3.5mm on the back of the motherboard. I thought I had solved it by simply using the front panel 3.5mm, but I discovered that it starts to crackle every now and again at higher volumes.

Which is unfortunate because the audio otherwise sounds great. There was a noticeable difference in quality between this board and my last board.

I'm using the latest version of the bios and all software at the time of this review.

UPDATE, 3/12/17; The audio cuts out intermittently and seemingly at random. The audio device will disable itself, then re-enable itself and sometimes cycle through this process multiple times and will continue doing so at random intervals until the PC is reset. This is almost a daily occurrence, but sometimes it's not. It's absolutely random. I didn't have this problem with my other setup, so I strongly believe it's the board itself. After reinstalling Windows 10 (twice) to see if that would fix this problem, the sound crackling issue when using the rear panel has also worsened as well. It's now totally unusable. I've had to purchase an audio card, which will hopefully resolve this issue.

I've also had issues with the lighting software being unresponsive and occasionally freezing my PC.

I can't in good conscious recommend this board until either an update is released to fix these issue or a revised version of the board itself is available. Having these problems across three separate and fully clean installs is pretty unacceptable. I would otherwise rate this board as being 5/5. It's beautiful, has plenty of features, OC's very easily and well... I have no complaints at all, otherwise. Unfortunate.

A nice looking, easy to use and set up motherboard. The BIOS interface is intuitive and easy to navigate (much better than the last Gigabyte mobo I set up). The XMP recognized my RAM right away, no problem, which was nice (G.Skill DDR4 3200).

I do have a couple notes and issues, though.

Notes:

The mouse speed can be altered in the BIOS. It's too slow to be usable until you set it to max. Also, the M.2 slot nearest the CPU cannibalizes two SATA ports when using an NVMe drive. I didn't realize that at first, but this is the first time I've used M.2 on a new build (I'm learning!).

Issues:

When using a PS/2 keyboard, it would initialize on POST (flash the LEDs and set num lock ON), but it wouldn't react to keystrokes. If I unplugged/plugged the keyboard I could CTRL+ALT+DEL to reboot ( hadn't installed the OS yet), but the same thing would happen again. I'll probably just need to troubleshoot it further, but I was kind of bummed I couldn't use the PS/2 port, which frees up a USB port.

The big issue is with all CPU settings set to Auto (i.e. factory settings), the vcore for my 7700K was set to 1.39 V at idle and 1.5 V under load. I didn't realize this until I did a Prime95 test and the temps went immediately to 100C (with liquid cooling) with the CPU speed throttled back. I about had a heart attack! After manually setting the vcore to 1.25, the temps were back to normal-ish under load (71C).

All-in-all it's a pretty dang nice motherboard with a few minor issues. It looks like Gigabyte already has a beta bios update available that deals with the voltage issue, so I imagine that will be fixed in the next "official" bios update. And I'm sure the PS/2 thing is just me being impatient after not finding an obvious answer. It's probably something easy and dumb.

The motherboard is amazing, great performance and is well worth the money however, the software that one must download to adjust the LED lights is buggy, prompts a debug code message often, randomly goes back to default color (red) after having PC on for long periods and then just stops working and forces itself shut. In other words if you really wanted customized LED lights this is not for you, if you prefer the lights off or the default color red, then this will work great. In my case I bought it for it's performance and for the customized lights as I had bought everything with lights to showcase my first big PC purchase (I even got a case made out of glass), so I am a little disappointed and took two stars away. Please Gigabyte, spend some time fixing your software and you will have more happier costumers.

Edit: 2019
Gigabyte updated their software several times and this last update did the trick for me, it performs as expected now thanks

4.0 out of 5 stars Great board with a couple of minor issues
Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2017

I love the aesthetics of this motherboard, and it does have some really awesome features, but I do have a couple of issues:

1) Upon waking up from sleep I always seem to get a D3 debug code, which indicates "some of the Architectural Protocols are not available". So far I haven't really been able to determine what this actually means. It doesn't seem to cause any issues, but it is a debug code, and for one reason or another it keeps showing up.
2) I have also gotten a D4 debug code, which other have mentioned on older Gigabyte boards sometimes had to do with a RAM issue. I am running 16GB (2x8) Corsair Vengeance LED (3000MHz) RAM that I specifically checked the RAM compatibility on before buying, with the XMP profile enabled to get the full 3000MHz performance from the RAM. So far, I haven't detected any issues with either stick of RAM, and that code only appeared one time after booting to Linuz Mint, then restarting into Windows 10. I have not been able to duplicate it yet. What does worry me is that the one time I had this code, I actually got the Windows 10 blue screen of death, and my computer had to restart. Unfortunately it happened so fast that I was unable to write down the code.
3) For whatever reason, I cannot get Linux Mint to recognize either the Killer or Intel LAN connections. This really sucks considering I use Linux for 75% of my computing. Update: So apparently it was the switch that I had running from my modem that was causing Linux not to connect to the internet properly. 1 problem solved.

I do really like this board, but I want to love it. I spent a lot of time planning out this system to get exactly what I wanted, so it is very disappointing to have these types of issues this early on. That said, the RGB features are awesome, the overclocking features seem pretty good (once downloading the Bios update for more stable voltages), and besides the issues that I mentioned, everything else about this board seems rock solid.

Update: 3/14/2017
I am still getting the D3 and D4 debug codes occasionally. I am really hoping that will be fixed with a Bios update eventually, although they seem to have no effect on how the system operates. As far as RAM issue that others have had, I did initially have that issue when trying to enable XMP overclock the RAM frequency, however, after I updated the Bios from the Gigabyte website, I now have my RAM (Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3000 (PC4-24000) C15 for DDR4 Systems, Red LED (CMU16GX4M2C3000C15R)) overclocked to 3000mhz with no issues.

I also just got my Samsung 960 EVO in the mail last week (they were out of stock for a while) and finally migrated over from my old 5400 WD Blue. Everything is working like a charm. I am very happy with this board, and I would buy it again.

Beautiful motherboard, amazing features, to much to list. At first I was a little disappointed with not being able to control each color individually, but after a few updates on the app control center I was able to do so along with control the one led strip I have plugged in at the moment. The board came with pre done settings for ocing an i7. I used the 4.8ghz preset and ran prime for over 20hrs with 1344 packets. No issues at all. The 5ghz preset however did not stay stable and I had to modify/clock myself which is not an issue at all. I am water cooling the board with the preinstakled block. Works amazing. Would totally recommend to anyone.
As for the LEDs, you can strobe, pulse, cycle, music, you name it you can do it. Sadly some modes do not allow individual lights on all, also for some reason there is not a dim option available yet for the LEDs so you end up having to click a million times to fine a darker version of the color you want that's just not as bright. Hopefully they will include that in the future updates.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Awesome Motherboard from Gigabyte

I own another Z170 Gaming GT Motherboard and have loved it for a long time. I had to move on away from Vista and XP so I went with this Gigabyte board. It was easy to physically install. Now to some useful information:
1. I would highly recommend installing Windows 10 on what ever your intended Drive from the start. I had to try and switch drives from a mechanical to a new SSD. I was unable to do an image recovery. Also I had quite a bit of buggy install issues getting the Samsung finally back to a normal state so Windows could see it to install. Terrible experience.
2. Overclocking this board is quite different from the previous Z170 boards. It is more difficult in that I had to search and try and find the magical setting in the UEFI that was preventing my overclock from being seen in Windows. Here are various settings I have noted that I will work with in doing my overclocking on my new i7 7700k Kaby Lake I will be installing tomorrow in place of the working i5 660k. Make sure to flash bios to latest.

Advanced CPU Core Settings
1. CPU Core Ratio set it to the desired frequency
2. uncore ration set to auto
3. CPU Flex override Disabled
* 4. Intel Turbo Boost Technology Set to Disabled
5. CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E) Disabeled
6. intel speed shift Disabled
7. CPU EIST function Disabled
8. Voltage optimitazion Enabled
9. RSR Enabled
9. Hardware Prefetcher Enabled

System

1.Fast boot disabled
2.mouse speed x3
3.Windows 8/10 features set to Windows 8/10 whql
4. CSM support to enabled

MIT - advanced memory timings
1. set xmp profile 1 to 3200 speeds
2.memory enhancemet settings to Relax OC
3. Memory timing mode to manual

MIT - Advanced Voltage
1. CPU Core * dont increase unless you have to by small increments and testing. This is the danger zone here. I hope I don't have to up the voltage on the 7700k.

I very much recommend this Mother Board to all. The RGB lighting is fantastic and you can set different lighting in the bios. Again I dont like the App center. You dont have to have it. In fact in my opinion it is best not to use it. I only used it once to see if I could actually overclock my cpu an yes it worked.

I hope all this was helpful to you. I absolutelly could not find the detailed settings I needed in the bios like I have give you here on You Tube or anyware. Copy what I typed and I guarentee this will save you a HUGE disappointment in your Overclocking. I suppose it is not Gigabytes fault for not giving the necessary settings to make. They want you to use the App Center with the like 30 apps that come with it. not my thing. Here is a pic o my board working on air with a Noctua.

5.0 out of 5 stars very stable

This motherboard is 5 dollars more than the gaming 5. Here is what you get for 5 dollars:
-a high bandwidth sli bridge
-extra lighting zone over io
-a better heat spreader over the cpu mosfets (a aluminum bar)
-back io caps for ports
-stickers, velcro straps, a lighting extension strip
-an improved audio amp
that is about 25 dollars worth of stuff for 5 dollars and no compromizes over the gaming 5. The performance is god like and all of my components shake hands well with this board. for 200 dollars you get a feature rich motherboard that looks good and performs admirably.

cons:
-This kind of thing happens with "all" motherboard companies. my cpu socket had 1 pin that was misaligned (OUCH!!) but i managed to fix it easily and performance was not hampered in any way.
-also, the bios is to be used with a keyboard, there is no gripe for me about that, but mouse movement in the bios is kinda a joke. just be a pro and use a keyboard.
-lastely, the auto voltage to my 7700K was very high 1.36v out of the box no overclocking.... really gigabyte :/ anyways if you are buying a 200 dollar motherboard this should be an easy fix, just change the voltage to 1.22 if you are using the 7700k stock and you will be fine.

ps: overclocked my 7700k to 4.8 on air using 1.285v and its so goooooood :D

3.0 out of 5 stars Problem with USB booting...
Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2017

The board looks slick and seems to run well... Except for trying to install an OS from a USB drive. In my case I had the latest BIOS revision F7, a Samsung 512GB NVMe SSD, and a USB 3 32GB drive with Windows 10 Enterprise 1703. Installation media was created with Rufus and boot tyoe was created as UEFI only. This drive worked to install on 3 other PCs without issue.

First was getting the USB drive detected. It just wouldn't. No matter my BIOS settings it just couldn't find the USB drive. After much peripheral switching, disconnecting items from the motherboard, etc... The only way I got it to work was waiting j til the machine was already one to connect the USB drive. I found connecting it at the splash screen when you can enter BIOS, press F12 etc... was the only way to get it to see it. Once it did, I was able to boot from it and install windows. The USB drive remained detected after I rebooted.

However, windows would crash after installation and first reboot at about 23% during the initial setup. Every, single, time. Seems it was detecting something that wasn't compatible or otherwise didn't like. I need to troubleshoot more to determine if it's the motherboard or other hardware related issues. Frankly I don't really to have to.

Either way the damn USB detection was an hour ordeal and many a Google searches later with a long history of this issue and Gigabyte motherboards. Shame too, I wanted to like this motherboard, however, it'll likely be returned and get something else. Maybe it's a lemon, maybe it's not. Never had this much trouble getting a system up and running.

If I can get it fixed or find a smooth solution, I'll happily change this review.

18DEC2017 Update
I attempted a 2nd go at this and swapped M.2 slots. No change. Attempted to use a few 2.5" SSD in RAID 0 on the SATA ports, no change with the windows installation being a failure but it seemed to go less further in the installation process and would fail before the first reboot at about the 20% mark. Tried just a single 2.5" SSD in AHCI mode. No change in the result. I created a new USB boot drive with Rufus on an older USB 2 drive and set it to be bootable with UEFI or MBR this go round. Tested on another machine the drive worked like the previous one. Used on this combination, and same installation error. I was attempting to move either USB boot drives into different ports to see if that would make a difference and I accidentally left them both connected and the installation processed passed, I was able to boot windows and write this review.

Overall I'm unsure what the issue was definitively, but considering all the problems I had with just recognizing the USB boot drive in the first place and having tested it out on other machines to know it was working, I'd have to say there's something "wonky" with this motherboard and USB drives, maybe just limited to the boot process. If I figure this out I'll update this review again.

Beyond that, windows is speedy compared to the previous machine but the VR was a great improvement. Now that it's working well enough to use, I'll put the stars at a 3, but for a new system builder this would've been a pretty tough challenge to overcome.

ISSUE: Having intermittent issues of USB power surge warnings when booting into windows.
TL:DR - Turned off windows fast boot and it seems to have stabilized.

Normally I'd say this is a windows issue but considering the previous issues I've been looking into this issue for about a month now. Could never get the issue to remedy for more than 1 or 2 boots so I started with disconnecting everything USB related, both internal and external. No luck. Still getting the issues. This also prevented me from using some USB ports, both USB3 and 2. I also notice windows was giving me the "new device connected" sound when I booted up. Like it was discovering a new device every single time. Since it prevented me from using the ports or devices connected to them, I had to see if it was at the BIOS level or Windows. So... I took a USB boot drive and connected it to each port and booted.BIOS saw the drive on all ports. Cool, thats great. Feels like a windows issue. Booted next and luckily I had windows repeatedly displaying the error today, as in every 3 seconds it would notify me. This gave me an opportunity to test disabling usb hubs and try to narrow it down. I disabled my root hubs and reinstalled one by one. Tried older drivers, factory motherboard drivers, intel drivers....Nothing corrected the issue. Though I did notice I was getting a different amount of hubs reported in device manager vs what was being reported in the BIOS. Huh. Weird. After some internet sleuthing, it turns out the fix wasn't driver related at all, but windows power setting called "fast startup." It's in control panel (Not settings) -> All control panel items -> power options -> choose what the power buttons do -> change settings that are currently unavailable (link) -> uncheck the "turn on fast startup (recommended)" option. Now I didn't recognize any noticeable boot time change, but what I did notice was all my USB root hubs and devices were there once I was at the login screen and NO more new device sound at login. Whoop! All my ports now work and all my devices are recognized at startup. Damn weird windows issue. All in all I hope this helps someone who might think it's a Gigabyte issue.

It's been a week or so and everything seems to be functioning properly. I've yet to put this Gigabyte Aorus GA-Z270X-Gaming 7 through a full battery of tests, but here is what I've found so far installed with Windows 10 Pro, an Intel i5 7600K, and 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX at 3200MHz.

Issues:
1. The headphone jack audio is horribly destroyed with static. I tried the different settings for the audio boost on the motherboard, but regardless, the gain sounds like it is cranked way beyond anything that should be possible. In essence, the headphone jack is unusable.

2. The positioning of the RAM slots makes it impossible to use anything but low profile modules in a mid-sized ATX tower when using a 240mm top-mounted water cooler. The simple fix is to get a full size ATX tower.

3. The Gigabyte APP Center (included software) rails bandwidth every time it is opened to the tune of 100 MB. It seems to try and do an update when opened, but for whatever reason sucks up bandwidth. Most people wouldn't care, but if using metered internet, it matters.

Praises:
1. Although the detailed user's guide tries to cover everything, it's unclear how to set up the memory speeds. Fortunately, a quick internet search explains that you only need to select "Profile1" from the XMP settings in the overclocking section of the BIOS. After that, it crashed the first time, but since has been rock steady at the full rated 3200MHz.

2. The OC mode (over clocking) is easily enabled on the fly from the Gigabyte APP Center, one click and it expands to 4.4GHz for the 3.8GHz 7600k which normally autoboosts to 4.2GHz. I've not tried pushing it farther, but certainly have that ability thanks to the AIO liquid cooler.

3. The system has been running perfect and left on for about 10 days now with no issues as of yet (outside of what it listed above).

4. The lighting is pretty versatile, capable of multiple step gradients. No spazzy speeds, though, so don't expect to make an insane light show unless you select the audio option.

5. It actually does fit in a mid-sized tower - I was concerned that the I/O plastic shield would collide with the rear fan, but fortunately, it clears by a few millimeters. I suggest, though, if you are in a similar tight space to be smart and remove the rear fan before trying to get the motherboard in place.

6. Comes with Velcro cable ties, two additional temperature sensors with long wires (I placed mine on a hard drive and the other on the power supply).

7. Lots of USB ports and room for more with additional interface plates, and several choices from USB 3.1, 3.0, and 2.0.

It's a great board from what I'm seeing so far. I bought it specifically to use the Thunderbolt port, but have yet to buy the expensive device I wish to use it with. I've also not installed a GPU, using the on-chip video for now. There is a setting in the BIOS to ensure it uses the integrated graphics which defaults to using a GPU. Make sure to change it to match your configuration the first time you boot in to BIOS.

I was afraid to buy this board because of the many complaints of Gigabyte having audio issues over their Z170 and Z270 series. Mine does have that horrible static in the headphone jack, but the rear ports are fine. I've not done extensive testing or frequency spectrum analysis yet, though.

It's still quite early, but I'll be sure to update if something goes wrong.
