Getting right to the point, the V-MODA Remix sound quality is quite good for the relatively small size of this Bluetooth speaker. I won't comment on price at this point, because that will come down to sound, build quality, features, and customizability. I don't know of any Bluetooth speaker of this size or type that offers what I'm going to describe, so let's see how that goes. My Remix speaker is the silver version, and there is also an identical Remix available in black.

I've had more than a few Bluetooth speakers - several of the Soundmatters models, large and small Jambox, Bose SoundLink Mini and SoundLink Color I and II, JBL Charge, Harman Esquire Mini, several of the UE's, several Altecs, etc. The Bose Bluetooth speakers put out quite a lot of bass that might work outdoors, but indoors I always had to turn the bass down on those because it was too muddy. It's the same deal with the UE's. The others didn't project much in the way of real bass - the kind you can feel a little bit as well as hear some undistorted bass tone. That last phrase describes the Remix bass, and that works without having to play against a wall or in a corner, which many such speakers depend on for reinforcement. The problem is, that reinforcement nearly always muddies up the bass.

The Remix midrange depends a lot on placement and volume. It's certainly clear and clean with good fidelity, but for best balance in intimate listening, you should try moving it closer or further away at different volumes, until it sounds right to you. In a conference setting or a small get-together where the Remix (or multiple daisy-chained Remixes) are filling a larger area with sound, the balance will be determined by the room itself - whether it's highly reflective or absorbent, or completely open, with no reinforcement at all. The Remix's highs go way up the hi-fi scale - at least as high as most people can hear, but the treble balance is very dependent on whether you sit close, directly in front of the speaker, or further back where room reflection and absorption kick in. I know this sounds like big-speaker talk, but the same rules apply here, only you get more flexibility with the smaller speakers.

Try "Katerine" by the Jim Ruiz Group or "Crying For No Reason" by Katy B, to get a sense of the typical bass impact and detail. These are not especially bassy recordings, but the Remix provides a visceral feel that belies its small size. To best appreciate the midrange, listen to "Bailando Entre Espuma" by Israel 'Cachao' Lopez for its sharp-edged horn sounds, or "Trains" by Porcupine Tree for the sheer amount of percussive energy it contains. Many of the "hi-fi" Bluetooth speakers will sound a little too rough or edgy with these tracks, but the Remix sails through them without harshness or significant colorations. Also check out "Optical Illusion (Billy Buttons Mix)" by William Orbit or "Wicked Game" by Chris Isaak, two high treble energy recordings that can be ear scorchers with other hi-fi Bluetooth speakers. The Remix plays these two tracks with silky smoothness.

The Remix that I ordered is the silver-color version, which can be seen in the accompanying photos. I put the red 'RemixRings' on each end, and you can also see the black rings in the photo. When adding any 3D custom housings or grilles to the speaker, these RemixRings secure those custom attachments to the speaker. Besides Bluetooth operation, a V-MODA double-miniplug cable is included to connect to a music player's headphone jack. The flat-ribbon charging cable is USB-A to USB-C, which is a nice forward-looking touch - just like my Macbook 12-inch. There are no compatibility issues here, since the USB-C connector is for the speaker and the standard USB-A connector goes into whatever USB port you have available (computer, iPod charger, etc.)

If you do order customizations for the Remix, or are just curious about its modularity, you can remove the 4 screws under the RemixRings and pull off the main aluminum housing, then remove the grille to see the driver units. I see a large-ish passive radiator on the front, but there is also one on the back. Whether both are contributing to the sound I don't know. The main drivers are close to 2 inches in diameter, which is nearly double that of most of the small Bluetooth speaker drivers, with more than triple their radiating surface area. The Remix also contains an audiophile-quality amplifier output ('VAMP') that can drive headphones or external powered speakers, and multiple Remixes can be daisy-chained in Bluetooth or wired configurations.

In addition to the music tracks noted above, I'm including a few more examples below with comments about how the Remix sounds with each track, in case a reader wants to compare these comments to other reviews I've done to evaluate the differences.

Animotion - Obsession (1980's New Wave/Techno): The upper bass synth has excellent detail and tone, and both male and female vocals sound natural without favoring either. The Remix plays this high-energy track brilliantly.

Bauhaus - Bela Lugosi's Dead (~1980): Strong midrange sound effects - this is a good worst-case test for resonant-type sounds in the most sensitive midrange area. Handled very well by the Remix.

Boz Scaggs - Lowdown (1976): Great sound quality - this is a good test for any nasality in the midrange. Handled perfectly by the Remix.

Cath Carroll - Moves Like You (1980's New Wave/Techno): This track's percussion and voice are crisp and well-balanced, and there's a good sense of space or soundstage around the voices and instruments. The Remix reproduces the space and detail extremely well.

Catherine Wheel - Black Metallic (~1991): Goth with industrial overtones - I like this since it's a great music composition and the sound effects are smoothly integrated into the mix. This may sound distorted or mushy with some speakers, but the Remix renders the deliberate instrumental distortions clearly.

Chris Isaak - Wicked Game (Pop/Rock): The Remix plays this high treble energy recording very smoothly - the voice and instruments are very detailed but not edgy - very musical in fact.

Chromatics - I'm On Fire (Synth-Pop, female lead): This track has a good amount of space around the voice and instruments, making for a very pleasant stereo image. The voice is excellent, and the tambourine sound is clearly identifiable.

Heaven 17 - Let Me Go (1980's New Wave/Techno): The bass instrument (guitar?) has excellent detail, and the voices and ambiance have a "you are there" quality that's uncommon in early 1980's pop music. The Remix plays this track quite well.

Jimmy Smith - Basin Street Blues (early 60's): This track has several loud crescendos of brass and other instruments that don't sound clean and musical with some speakers. The Remix provides excellent reproduction. Listen particularly to the second crescendo at 15 seconds in for best-case detail. I'd like to emphasize that these crescendos are probably the worst-case test I have for instrument separation and detail, and the Remix does those very well.

Pinback - Non Photo Blue (Pop-Rock): Crispy sound with "crunchy guitars and bashing drums" - the Remix renders this music as good as I've heard such an energetic pop-rock recording played with any small Bluetooth speaker.

Porcupine Tree - Trains (Pop-Rock): This track opens with some nicely-detailed string sounds and a forward-sounding male voice with a higher-than-average register. There are a series of "clip-clop" effects starting at 3:19 that should sound like they were made with wooden blocks of some kind. The Remix reproduces the 'clop' portion of that sound with a lighter tonality than most larger speakers.

Scarlatti-Kipnis - Sonata in E Major K381 (Classical, Harpsichord): The harpsichord here is fairly bright and highly detailed, and the Remix renders the tones and transients perfectly.

Tiger Okoshi - Bootsman's Little House (Jazz): The trumpet here is recorded fairly close up and is somewhat bright with a significant "bite". The Remix's reproduction is near-perfect, and the close-miked piano is also a treat. For comparison, I have several Maynard Ferguson tracks that feature a similarly strong trumpet with lots of brassy bite.

1.0 out of 5 starsV-MODA remix speaker keeps turning off
Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2018
The sound quality is very good and the small size is great but the speaker will turn off if it does not have audio coming in after 10 minutes. This means if you take a phone call the speaker will may shunt off and give a very loud sound, even if it is plugged in and not running on the battery! V-MODA clams six star customer service but I have sent two emails with no response and can not get support on the phone. This is a very annoying and unusable product. I will not use it until there is a firmware update to fix the problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Power Packed Bluetooth Speaker w/ a built in Headphone Amp is a Game Changer
Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2017
Color: BlackVerified Purchase
I've been using the Bose Soundlink Mini for the past two years...almost daily in my garage when I'm working out there. I wanted something that was better sounding and had a bit more volume. I thought about getting a Sonos system out there, but ultimately decided I wanted something smaller and more portable. Enter the Remix. The promise of higher quality sound and the built in amp to drive speakers/headphones was another positive.

To start...the fit and finish of the device is quite good. I ordered the Black Leather one, which may have been a mistake given it's going to be a garage based sound system. Lots of dust! But that's my own issue, not the speaker's. It's a bit bigger than the Soundlink Mini, but the sound goes significantly louder...which was my end goal, so I can deal with the bigger size. My one complaint about the physical design is that one of the torx screws on the bottom wasn't threaded all of the way in, which resulted in the device wobbling on the table. I found the right torx size and got it in properly and all was well. Hopefully it was just a one time thing.

The sound quality is fantastic. The bass is by far the best part of this little device. It's shockingly clear and accurate...way moreso that the Soundlink Mini. It hits pretty hard and deep for something so small. If you stick the device in a corner or closer to a wall it actually shakes the desk/workbench. The mids and highs are equally as good...very good for male vocals (which is all I listen to really) and the highs are crisp and clear and they extend very well. Overall the sound is nice and balanced with a slight emphasis on the bass, like most V-MODA products. Of all of the mini portable BT speakers I've heard, the Remix is quite a bit better than the rest (I've had the Beats Pill, a Sony one and the Soundlink Mini so far).

One of the other great features is the built in VAMP (amplifier). I have a set of M-Audio AV40 powered speakers that I use in my backyard when we have parties/bbqs. Before I had to have my phone or ipad connected up to them. Now I just sit the Remix next to the speakers and I can connect whatever device I want via BT and it just plays perfectly! More sound than I'd ever need in my backyard. I'm sure the neighbors already hate me.

My one gripe w/ the device is the startup/pairing/shutdown sounds. WAY too loud. Borderline obnoxious. I wish there was a way to turn that off.

All that said, its a fantastic portable speaker that I recommend highly. I'm extremely picky when it comes to sound and functionality and the Remix ticks all of those boxes and then some. Features like the built in amp for headphones/speakers really is a game changer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lot better than I expected

I had been looking for another portable speaker for a little while since my iHome took a poop on me. I've always been a fan of V-MODA and I couldn't refuse a chance at one of these.

The overall size isn't bad at all. It's big enough to catch your attention, yet small enough to not mind carrying it around.

I mainly use potable speakers for work. I work as a tech at a dealership, so I need something small to maintain my work space. I personally like using Bluetooth just for the ease of answering calls/texts when I need to. V-MODA offers a stable Bluetooth setup. So much so that in one of our shops, I stood 100' away, phone in hand, and it was still playing!

One thing I love about the REMIX is that the quality of sound in phenomenal. While I'm in my work area, it sounds like a full stereo system! Miss and highs are clearly played and lows can be felt in a close distance. Yes, in a good acoustical area, I could feel the bass a little! I typically like my music loud, so I assumed the REMIX would bother the other techs. I was wrong, it didn't overpower background noise at all. But when my shop 10,000 sq ft+ was empty, I could hear my music everywhere!

I won't deny, I was skeptical of how well it would sound with so many components being made from a 3D printer. But I was dumbfounded.

The REMIX advertises a 10 hour play time. So I put it to work for a whole week. Plug it in before bed and then take it to work. It made it through 10 hour days (lunch included, so it got a constant 10 hours without a break) without an issue. According to my iPhone, it still had 25-30% battery left.

Sounds phenomenal, Bluetooth is reliable, and the battery lasts longer than advertised (even when it's Bluetooth'd all day). I'd be hard pressed to find another portable speaker that contends with the REMIX.

One thing I didn't want to test, is the rigidity of the REMIX. But it sure would be cool to know if it could withstand a minor impact.

4.0 out of 5 stars Little pricey for what it gives

Been using Vmoda products for probablly 8+ years now. I've had their earbuds, on ear, and over ear headphones. I'm used to what they sound like, and its loud bass and a sense of style in the product itself. The base speaker looks fine on its own, it gains more of the V-moda image when you buy the extra 3D printed stands. But the part you really want to know about is the sound quality. And you know what, it's disappointing.

I'm using a Fiio X3 gen 1 with various high quality auido tracks here ripped from CD's as apple lossless, along with regular mp3. The highs sound trapped, its like they want to come out but there's not the right equipment to let them out. Mids are fine, it sounds like what most V-moda products produce. Now the bass, the main force that makes me buy product after product from these guys. Its almost there, almost. I know this is a wireless bluetooth speaker and its not like I can draw wall current from it to make a 2 inch speaker sound like my 10 inch sub. But its just not there, it really depended on who i played to kinda hear it. Hip hop artists are kinda iffy, electronic was hit and miss. I seemed to hit it better with artists that I usually don't expect with vmoda product. I wonder if daisy chaining would help, but I could have made a car payment and bought a month of gas for this, so its something I wouldn't test till they make the v2.

Various songs tested with the product and file

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue - All Blues - Lossless (CD)

Michael Jackson - BAD - Just good friends - Lossless (CD 80's Japanese copy, figured I would mention)

Daft Punk - Random Access Memories - Within - Lossless (CD)

Alice in Chains - Unplugged - Would? - Lossless (CD)

Ape Escape - Originape soundtrack - Cryptic Ruins - Lossy (itunes)

Rush - Moving Pictures - Tom Sawyer - Lossless (Vinyl Rip)

1.0 out of 5 stars V-MODA remix speaker keeps turning off
Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2018

The sound quality is very good and the small size is great but the speaker will turn off if it does not have audio coming in after 10 minutes. This means if you take a phone call the speaker will may shunt off and give a very loud sound, even if it is plugged in and not running on the battery! V-MODA clams six star customer service but I have sent two emails with no response and can not get support on the phone. This is a very annoying and unusable product. I will not use it until there is a firmware update to fix the problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing sound and features

First of all let me say that I love V-Moda products, their unique sound signature and customizability speak to me in a way that no other audio company can. That being said, if you've used any of their headphones you have a good idea of what to expect as far as sound quality and clarity. One surprise I had was how loud this little unit gets. So much sound from such a small package. The unit works via either 3.5mm cable or Bluetooth and has a built in headphone amp, which V-Moda states is a first for any product of this type.
A great thing about these is that if you have multiple ones you can daisy chain them together via the included cable and have multiple units playing the same audio.
As with other V-Moda products, if one were to purchase them directly from the manufacturer there are many customization options. These are not quite as affordable as they are with other products and quickly multiply the cost for the device, however, if one wants a unique piece this is an option.
Another thing to consider is which shell to go for. I purchased both and the silver is nice because it's solid and doesn't seem like it would be as prone to scratches as the black vegan leather may be. The silver matches a lot of my other devices well. It comes down to personal preference but both are great choices and come down to what works better for you. I have this one on my desk while the black one is on a small shelf in my bedroom.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Speaker - Not Durable
Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2018

This speaker sounds great, and the headphone amp is fantastic. Unfortunately, the rubber pieces on the ends of the speaker break if you breathe on them. The first time the rubber piece broke on my speaker, it was a month old, and I complained to V-Moda. To their credit, they shipped me two replacement pieces. I replaced one, and a week later the other end broke. Now months later the second one broke again. My speaker sits on my desk so it's not like It gets moved a lot. The rubber ends are just cheap and not durable. For the price of this speaker I expected more in the way of durability.

5.0 out of 5 stars so I buy all kinds of crap I don't need on Amazon
Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2018

OMG, so I buy all kinds of crap I don't need on Amazon. First review i'm doing because this deserves it. I am an absolute audiophile A/V junkie... I have the best of everything: for my home theater SIX 18" Seaton Sound sealed Subs, JTR main speakers downstairs, Goldenear (Sandy Polk new company) Triton One's down stairs.. Dirac Live DDRC-88a for room correction, Mid bass modules out the ass, SRT Jeep with tricked out audio, I've got over 100K in audio equipment.

For headphones I've been a Bose fanboi, I have all their best headphones, their best noise cancelling over ear ones, the soundsports for gym and then the other wireless $300+ noise cancelling ones they have with the thing that goes around your neck...

My jawbone broke, so I was going to go with Bose top of the line speaker like this until I started reading reviews so I decided to check this V-Moda out.

Here's my advice. Pull out your wallet and buy thing thing now. It's like they've done some witchcraft on this thing. It's very small but ABSOLUTELY DESTROYS IT in sound. It's soooooooo good. I'm grinning ear to ear. This is the bomb. Get it. Now. Win.

First off......I LOVE THIS SPEAKER ! I have been a big fan of V moda products for awhile now. I've own their complete line of headphones getting use to their highest quality of sounds. But when using a bluetooth speaker, I had settled for other brand : JBL or bose......don't get me wrong those brands are good in their own right but when you are spoiled by Vmoda you'll know what's good for you.

So when I found out that there was a bluetooth speaker, I jumped at the opportunity. ...usually I'll do my research on YouTube to see what people are saying. ....but no need to when it came to this brand and reputation.

The vocals are so much clear at any volume, mids are pleasantly easy and of course the bass is just right.....not muddy just the right punch.
