5.0 out of 5 starsWonderful compact macro lens
Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2017
The Canon EF-s 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM is optimized for macro photography and only fits Canon APS-C cameras like the EOS 80D and Rebel series. Here are my thoughts on this lens after a couple weeks of use:

The reason to buy this lens over the excellent EF 40 2.8 STM or EF 35 3.0 is for the macro mode. Being able to quickly take a tight closeup of a tiny flower, coin or insect is great. However, realize at 1:1 the front element is only about one inch from the subject. That’s okay for inanimate objects but not wee moving critters. Also, a one inch working distance blocks most ambient light, so the integral LED ring light is essential. The LED light, activated with a button on the barrel, is handy albeit only bright enough for a macro subject a few inches from the lens. You’ll still need stronger external illumination once beyond the high magnification macro range.

BUILD: Although lightweight—190g—construction seems reasonably robust: sturdy plastics in barrel and metal mount. For a 1.0x macro lens it’s compact but considerably larger than an EF 40 2.8 STM. Focus distance and depth of field marks are absent from this lens.

A quasi lens hood is provided, the ES-27, but is silly small. It’s sturdy aluminum but more of a fat 49mm filter adapter. I’d rather have a normal sized twist-on hood but at least a hood was provided.

IMAGE QUALITY: Wide open it's sharp and vivid but oh so slightly soft in the corners. Bokeh is pleasantly smooth in defocused areas. By F4.0 it’s pin sharp across the frame. It’s surprisingly flare resistant and landscapes with prominent horizons and/or vertical lines have no noticeable distortion. In short, image quality is very good open wide and excellent a stop down.

AUTO FOCUS is peppy for a macro lens but slower than typical USM zoom. Most significantly, AF is accurate and rarely misses on my 80D. Focus is buttery smooth and great for touchscreen pulls during video. The focus motor is inaudible to my ears.

Like other STM lenses, manual focus is "focus-by-wire"; i.e., the MF ring activates the focus motor but isn’t mechanically coupled to the lens. MF is only active when the shutter button is half-depressed. The MF ring is small but grippy and a lot better than the MF ring on my EF 40 2.8 STM.

IMAGE STABILIZER (IS) yields about three stops of additional hand holdable range for normal photography. IS is quiet and isn't audible on video when using built-in mics. However, unless you can brace you hand on something, most photographers will need to use a tripod when at full macro magnification.

FINAL BLURB: I want excellent image quality in an easy to carry package. And the EF-s 35mm f/2.8 Macro IS STM hits that mark, making it a great lens for macro on my 80D. While it works fine for general photography it isn’t especially fast nor can it zoom. So if you’re not into macro, this lens is not for you. I found it a dream for quick photos of small flat objects—coins, documents and art work—as there is virtually no distortion in both macro and normal ranges and the IS allows sharp images without busting out my tripod all the time. All in all a wonderful lens for macro loving photgraphers.

Lens is good quality like other Canon lenses I've purchased The macro capabilities are less than what I desired, but that's my mistake. Otherwise, it works well and results in very decent pictures

After taking several great photos I went back to check my previous review on this lens and I hadn't written one! Shocking because I am in love with this lens. On a cropped body I'm trying to get used to different focal lengths. I usually like candid or street photography so the 24mm pancake has been my go-to for some time. I'm trying to get out of my comfort zone and this meets my needs perfectly. I also, purchased the non macro f.2 35mm Canon lens. The extra stop of light on the f.2 is perfect for low light shooting. They do have a different feel and different features so if your contemplating between the 2 I'd suggest saving for both! Regarding this macro lens I have zero regrets. I highly recommend purchasing this lens.

UPDATE 12/2/18
I've recently switched to the Fuji system (X-T20, X-T3). The only electronic adapter available is Fringer. I've purchased that lens adapter and am now using this on my Fuji camera. Just like Canon translates very well using an adapter with a Sony lens, well same applies to using the Fringer adapter for Fuji. If fact, in both situations you'll often find that they are better with the adapter. I've always loved this lens but it has quickly gone from loving to favorite. I love a lot of my lenses but only a few are my favorite. The focal length, colors, sharpness, light weight, build quality, price, macro feature, etc, are everything I want in a lens. Canon has some amazing value lenses (50mm, 24mm, 40mm) but this one is frequently overlooked. This has to be one of my top 5 lenses. Even after my updated review, and even after using on a non-Canon camera, as my headline reads; Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The CHEAPEST prime with Image Stabilization

This is a EF-S Lens, so APSC only. All of the Cheap Canon Prime STM lenses worth every penny (24mm, 35mm, 40mm and 50mm). I used to loved the 24 for video and 50 for photography. But then I bought the 35mm, instantly become my favorite of the 4 for video and photos.
The IS is perfect but not the best fo macro; the focus ring is incredible smooth; the focus sistem makes no sound (that was the thing that shook me the most); with the f.2.8 you get a little bit of background separation; And a true 1:1 magnification directly out of the lens. This is really an all-porpouse lens, now it is one of my go to lens for product photography
But I gotta say that this is not only a Macro lens, but a general porpouse, especially with that 56mm APS-C equivalent. The IS improves video capabilites.

The only con: That led light, I only found it useful as a focus aid for macro (Only), and for taking photos I use an external flash. Also If you don't want to cover de LED with the little hood adapter, you can use 27mm filters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible lens. Easily the best value prime lens for crop sensors.

Incredible. Macro shots are near microscopic, the LEDs provide enough light on their own out to about 6” or so for fast sharp macros at 2.8.

This may be classified as a macro, but it does an incredible job at portraits, with great bokeh.

I use this as my main video lens. The focus is absolutely silent. I mean it, no discernable vibration, no sound at all. You wouldn’t know it was focusing unless you were watching the viewfinder.

I have yet to find any flaws with this lens whatsoever. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Canon knocked it out of the park and into low earth orbit wit this lens.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Little Lens to Experiment With
Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2018

Not the ideal focal length for macro, but it opens up opportunities with the short MFD. I use it in place of a 50mm for daily photography on a crop sensor (about the equivalent relative to full frame). The little hood is cute and the macro light has come in handy a couple times for super close macro work. It's a nice AOV for video and the IS is handy even at this focal length when on the move. Widest aperture is adequate for low light and bokeh, but I haven't tested it against other lenses for the latter. Focusing is quick and silent. Not much else to say. Great lens!

I bought this lens as a hybrid for macro and street photography / landscapes. I love this lens for landscapes and street photography, but have struggled with the macro aspect. It is also not the ideal focul length for portraits, but I knew that before purchasing. I have a 100mm macro lens as well and I much prefer that for macro. With this 35mm you have to get really close to the subjects. I often photograph insects and find they get scared off as the lens is a lot closer to them than it is with the 100mm. I am still learning to use this lens to it's full capacity, but I like the quality. The light isn't that great, but it helps because with a focal length like this, you can accidentally create an unwanted shadow from the camera being so close to it's subjects. Great lens, I recommend it for people who are just getting into photography. It will give you a wide range of shooting capabilities and is very lightweight and easy to take anywhere. You cannot beat the quality from a prime lens.

I am in love with these Lens, i was originally going to buy a $20 macro attachment from amazon but instead i took a leap and just bought these lens and they are amazing. I have a canon t3i and it’s just such a versatile lens. Good for up close, portraits and landscapes. None of these pictures have been messed with except for the picture with the bridge, i saturated that one a bit. It’s easy to use, quiet, and so light. Good material and the light is a really cool feature. I’m just in love and don’t regret spending $300 i didn’t have 😅

This is an awesome little lens. The front mounted LED’s are very versatile. The power is supplied by the camera body. There are two separate lights on each side of the lens. Each can be operated individually or simultaneously. They also have two brightness levels. I’m a fire investigator. I needed a lens that could take very close up high quality images in very dark places. This lens fits the bill.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Macro lens- Like the lights but test before you depend on that illumination.

Good lens. Quality of the glass is far better than the body material quality. The build quality isn't bad per se' but its a plastic body with a metal mount. The mount is what raises its quality a bit more. Grinding plastic of the first version of this lens against metal on the camera body wouldn't have been a good thing in my opinion.

The light is gravy for me. It isn't necessary but can be super useful for adding a little clarity to very close shots where your camera or your head might obscure some lighting, just do some tests before you depend on it- the light you get from the lens is white and that might not be what you want for your shot. Still Happy with the purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Macro Lens
Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2018

This is a really sharp and relatively light lens for both macro as well as general photography. The lens mount is metal while the lens body itself is made of plastic. One thing that prospective buyers should be wary of is that due to the short focal length, the working distance at 1:1 magnification is quite low (around 1-2" from front lens element). While IS is great for general photography, it is by and large, not helpful for macro shots.
The small metal hood/ filter adaptor provided with the lens protects the front element when shooting macro. This is essential due to the short working distance, which increases the odds of damaging the front element. However, this cap also blocks out the LED light.
