5.0 out of 5 starsStylish, Lightweight, Great Screen But Average Battery Life
Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2018
Ideally I'd like to give this 4.5 stars, with my only gripe being battery life. My main use of this computer is a little bit of data handling in Microsoft Excel and Rstudio, alongside watching movies and general internet browsing. I have so far found that on a single charge I can expect 3.5-4 hours of battery life whilst streaming movies (using ~70-80% brightness). This was a little less than what i was expecting, but never the less, I can make it work.

I had read reviews on issues with the back lighting of the keyboard and issues with the mouse pad, but as far as I am concerned both perform just as well and if not better, than my old Macbook Air. It is comfortable to type on, and i find that the mouse pad is responsive and easy to manoeuvre and for the three weeks that I have had this, I have had no issues with either aspect.

I had also read that i should expect it to get hot whilst charging or doing onerous tasks. I have not experienced this yet and have found the bottom of the laptop to never be uncomfortable, or even slightly uncomfortable even when doing intensive tasks. Another positive note is that with the lack of fans, this laptop is silent.

Another thing which is not necessarily a gripe on my behalf but something that others may want to be aware of, is the lack of ports on the laptop. If you've done your research you will note that it only has two USB C ports (one for charging) and one 3.5mm headphone jack. You do get a "matedock" which provides you with a couple extra ports, but is an additional thing you need to carry around. However, for my uses, 2 USB C ports is just fine and in no way effects my enjoyment of this laptop. So just be aware of this when you buy it.

The screen is excellent, it is bright and the bezels are very thin, making it stylish and enjoyable to do my day to day computer based tasks. The unit itself looks and feels professionally made, it feels solid whilst being incredibly portable due to how light it is. I have had no issues with the software and find that it runs smoothly and quickly. It would be nice to have a bit more RAM, but for the price I paid this was an incredible bargain, being more than $300 cheaper than a comparably spec'd Macbook/Surface.

Overall I enjoy using this much more than my old Macbook Air. I wanted something that looked as stylish, could perform moderately intense tasks and was as portable but with Windows and so far the Matebook X has been an excellent option.

1.0 out of 5 starsBUYER BEWARE - HUAWEI SUPPORT SUCKS!
Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2018
I loved this device when I first got it, an ultrabook with very compact styling and all metal. Its performance was stellar.

Since I've owned this device, the hinge has been clicking and opening at an angle. Huawei is now refusing to repair this under warranty. I gave this company a second chance after having such horrible experiences with their customer service on my Nexus phone they made. (that thing had battery issues that are still unresolved, and it was a hardware issue... most likely.)

My screen has been clicking, and opening at an improper angle, and one day, it opened at that angle, got slightly stuck and the screen cracked. To no surprise, Huawei is refusing to repair, even the hinge. I AM NEVER GOING TO GIVE HUAWEI ANOTHER CENT. Do not give this company any money, they do not care about their customers, and I would conjure to guess they violated patents from the macbooks lineup. (they have the same hinge issues)

All I want is the device I paid for in perfect operational capacity, which should be covered under Huawei's warranty, which when the time comes they always refuse to repair. This is not the first time I have had issues with Huawei's customer service, but it is most certainly the last. Customer lost forever.

Sound:
2 speakers with Dolby Atmos sound very loud and impactful when watching video/movies. Better than most laptops I’ve experienced

Windows Hello For Business:
- Fingerprint sensor under the power button works perfectly every time when the system is running. Quick and responsive. 100% success rate.
- When powering up the system with the power button from shutdown state, it will log me directly into Windows about 80% of the time. The problem might be service startup related (i.e. Windows) rather than the hardware. Regardless, it is a minor inconvenience because a simple tap of the power button logs me in very quickly.

Skype For Business:
- The built in mic array works very well. No need for a separate headset and microphone. Calls are clear and clean.

Final thoughts:
- This is almost the perfect laptop. It would get 5 stars if the battery life were 8 hours or more. But even with 5 hours, the fact that it quick charges makes the current battery life tolerable. It would also be desirable if the i7 model had the gray color option. As of this review, the i7 can only be had in Gold.
- It charges over USB Type C which makes this ideal for travel since many new phones also charge over USB Type C so you can simply carry one charger for all your devices. You can also charge this laptop with a mobile battery pack (though it will be a very slow charge but could come in handy in an emergency).
- The display quality is really good and increasing brightness does not seem to impact battery life at all.
- The backlit keyboard feels very good and the precision trackpad works extremely well. No need for an external mouse at all.
- The build quality is impressive. And it is a beautiful device. This is essentially a functional work of art.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully made and performing Ultrabook, with tolerable performance compromises.
Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2018

Best ultrabook ever. I can't express enough what a difference it makes not to have screaming fans running all the time. The screen is beautiful and quite functional at 125% scaling although I have 20/10 vision. The 3:2 ratio is infinitely more productive than the aggravating 16:9 unless you watch movies all day. It is quite a firm keyboard and takes getting used to--I am still nowhere near as fast as on the Steel Series on my big MSI and make more typos. The i5 is plenty fast--in doing my research the difference in the two processors is minimal (just cache), since they are both 15W core parts with HT and Intel Extreme Tuning utility shows that it will turbo up to 25W anyway, the melty-goop that cools it will happily suck it up (I haven't seen CPU temps over or under 40C). With judicious use of the Win10 battery slider, it consistently gets about 6 hours of battery life (sometimes longer), I suppose the biggest drawback for some people. The fingerprint sensor is seemingly flawless. The complaints about the touchpad are way overrated, it is perfectly functional. The charging is great, super fast with the OEM charger (while running) and (while sleeping only) will even take a charge from a 5V phone charger. The Intel WiFi gets well over 500Mbps from my WRT3200ACM. Aside from the port restrictions (charge left, display right only) both work fine with my USB C gigabit ethernet/USB hub, and it boots from a thumbdrive inserted into same just fine. I do wish it had come with Windows Pro so I could use BitLocker, as an alternative I bought a Samsung T5 which is encrypted for more space/anything sensitive. It does have a TPM so this makes no sense (other than $$$).
I will say this--it is not upgradable. The RAM cannot be increased and this was my biggest reservation, but under heavy use has no presented problems and Windows seems to do a good job of managing it. The SSD is easily upgradable, but I still cannot find any M.2 NVMe 2242 (the short package) parts above 256GB. Make a smart decision, if you need the 512GB get the gold i7 one. Obviously manage your expectations (as in, none) for gaming with the Intel graphics but it does run Black Mesa in a playable fashion.
The media is very excited about the Matebook Pro, but I would still buy this one for the smaller size and lack of fans. For a silent footprint the size of a piece of paper, this simply can't be beat. For half the price of an XPS13 with a decent screen.
Oh, as far as silent goes, did I mention the speakers are better than the Dynaudios in my huge MSI? No need to travel with a bluetooth speaker.
To sum it up--perfect travel computer? Yes. Ultrabook that is ALSO a desktop replacement? Not by any stretch, but that's not what I bought it for.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST ultraportable laptop.
Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2017
Verified Purchase
Display: 4.5/5 Bright, Accurate & Well-saturated Colors, Glossy but fights glare, Clear.
Sound: 5/5 Loud and clear. Sounds even better than a MBP 15
Keyboard: 5/5 As good as the old keyboard in Macbooks
Touchpad: 4.5/5 Glass, Good size, solid & Precision drivers works well. (Make sure to put High Sensitivity in Settings). Tapping it sometimes give you a feeling that its kind of loose. But most of the time and when your clicking it.. its very solid. As good as a Mac touchpad actually.
Battery: 3/5 Six to Eight Hours. I personally don't need more than this so its not an issue for me

Coming from the XPS 13 FHD, I immediately noticed the build quality being better.
It actually has the best build quality among all Windows laptops I've seen.
The keyboard is like 10 times better than my XPS.
I did notice the relatively low contrast but still very good 900+. XPS 13 has like 1500 so...
But this one is much brighter.
Performance is about the same but feels a bit snappier.. all that without FANS. Amazing!
And the 3:2 aspect ratio on a 13 inch device makes all the sense in the world. It's hard to go back to 16:9 unless on a big monitor.

My only gripe is the lack of battery management. Most laptops have a utility in BIOS or an app that can set a battery charging limit.
I like to keep my laptop plugged in the AC cause I always use for all my computing needs. Having have to use it on battery all the time will only make discharging it more frequently and will then shorten the battery lifespan. If there is a way to set the charhing limit to about 80%, this laptop will be PERFECT.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great performing laptop (Added: when it is not deforming)
Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2018
CPU: Intel core i7 8+512Style: Prestige GoldVerified Purchase
As a long time PC user, I was getting frustrated with my 4 year old Lenovo for it's Windows-ness. For example, the lid would only sometimes sleep the machine, my wifi would go wonky, and so on. I would restore Windows and it would work well for a while then the same once again. So I went MacBook Pro with touchbar. I loved it, except that it was MacOs and a lot of what I do was not seemless on the Mac the way it was on the PC. So I wanted the feel and size of the MBP, the fit and finish of it, but no bloatware with a SSD and I7 processor for speed. The MateBook fit the bill perfectly at a fair price.

This machine was easy to setup, superfast start up and overall great. It is exactly what a laptpo should act like. The only cons are these: Only 2 USB-C ports, and the left is power only, the right is display only. I am concerned if a port goes out, I am out of luck. The screen is gorgeous, but being a 2k display the print is small and for my aging eyes, my larger external monitor is preferred. Lastly, it is rose gold. I don't have a problem with it, but silver/gray/black would have been prefereable.

Added 07/2019: the case is deformed due to a bulging battery. I bought the SquareTrade warranty, but caveat emptor: It is a 2 week turn around to the depot with transit. The case cannot shut fully, and the unit is starting to overheat now. I hope they repair it fully in service. I'll report if not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Little Machine
Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2018
CPU: Intel core i7 8+512Style: Prestige GoldVerified Purchase
This is a great little machine. Very fast, very sturdy metal build, but very light weight. Clean, crisp graphics. I type lengthy reports and I find the keyboard fast and responsive. I purchased this machine with the 500GB solid state drive, which is well worth the additional money. For me it will mean the difference between more than sufficient storage and tight fit because I'm also an amateur photographer. I already loaded Photoshop, and this laptop has more than enough speed and capacity to handle heavy photo editing work. One downside is that there is only a USB-C port. The machine comes with a hub to connect other stuff, but I've got to find a hub that can handle more than one standard USB-B at a time. I already ordered USB-C card reader because that's the fastest way to move my photos from camera to laptop. When mobility is paramount, as it is for me, I don't like having all these other hardware plugins, but that's a minor inconvenience relative to the overall quality and performance of this machine. The biggest drawback is that battery life isn't great. On my first go, it lasted about 3 hours. So, in sum, the single USB-c and the less than stellar battery life are the two drawbacks. Otherwise, I'm very pleased. This machine will remind you of a Macbook, but of course it's the Windows 10 operating system, which I prefer. And for the money, I think this is a better deal than a roughly comparable Macbook. In awarding stars I'd have given it 4 1/2 if that were possible, but 4 is too low, so I went with 5.

2.0 out of 5 stars Touchpad is the weakest part of this laptop
Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2017

The media could not be loaded.
I hate Mac OS but I love the build quality and design of the MacBook. And of course, when I first saw this new laptop from Huawei, I instantly fell in love with it. Almost all internet tech reviewers were screaming something like: Finally, this is the first Windows MacBook! And that was actually exactly what I needed. Aluminum body, fanless design, great display, excellent speakers...almost everything the latest Apple products have. Huawei even went a step further and added more stuff like, screen with thin bezels, "normal" keyboard, fingerprint reader, additional USB-C port (if you compare it to 12 inch MacBook) and etc. All, at a price that was significantly lower ($899 as of the date of this review) than the cheapest Apple MacBook. This was supposed to be ideal Windows laptop in my understanding. I was blown away even more when I finally got my hands on it. This was the most beautiful laptop I've ever seen!

I normally do not purchase laptops unless I test them first personally. But since this Matebook X was not available locally, my only option was Amazon. As a matter of fact, this was my first device that I purchased online, just by looking at pictures and reading the reviews. And this was my biggest mistake. If I could go, let's say, to a local Huawei retail store and play with Matebook X for a little bit, well...I probably would have never made this purchase. An were is why.

TOUCHPAD. Yes touchpad is the weakest part of this almost 100% perfect system. It has a very annoying clicky noise when you tap on it. There is a slight gap (about 1mm) between the glass surface and the actual touchpad mechanism, so whenever you try to TAP on it it will make this super annoying noise. I am on replacement unit #2 right now and it has exactly the same issues the 1st unit had. Another issue with this touchpad is unresponsiveness. It has some unresponsive zones alongside the top, left and right edges. Watch the video that I attached with this review to see exactly what I am talking about. While there is a chance that unresponsiveness could be a software issue, there is no way you can fix the touchpad noise and freeplay (wobble) without physically making changes in it.

I did some further research ad found that this seems to be a common problem and looks like to be present on all 1st gen Matebook X laptops. There are a few videos on Youtube where people were complaining about that as well. I even contacted Huawei's Customer Support here, in the US, and they suggested that I return this laptop back to Amazon before my free return period expires. That is exactly what I am going to do tomorrow.

I hope that Huawei addresses these issues when/if they refresh the laptop in the future.

A few other issues that I had with this laptop during almost 3 weeks of daily use:
- this thing is a fingerprint magnet! Especially the keyboard. Comparing to a Space gray colored Macbook the difference is night and day;
- keyboard backlight is uneven, again comparing to 2017 Macbook the difference is night and day;
- biometric log-in function stopped working all of a sudden. I didn't do anything, just turned it on in the morning and it would not accept my fingerprint. Driver reinstallation didn't help, had to restore the whole system in order to get back the functionality.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much better than what it is trying to be...
Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2017
CPU: Intel core i7 8+512Style: Prestige GoldVerified Purchase
This is a great laptop. I bought it a month ago and wanted to use it for a while to be able to write more than just my initial impressions. After a month, I can say that I like it better now than I did when I first opened the box.

I have the golden version, which I was worried would be too flashy but I needed the bigger drive. Fortunately, it is a nice gold with an excellent built quality, though I don't necessarily like the way it's trying to emulate a design of a different product that is inferior in every way, except one, the way it looks. It is definitely very similar to the Macbook but it is not better built. Even the lettering on the bottom is trying to imitate what is on an Apple laptop, just as if this were a cheap knock off, which it certainly isn't. Why then is Huawei trying to look like an Apple when in fact it's much better?

Matebook X is super fast, boots up in seconds and has a very accurate fingerprint reader. The screen is of very high quality with beautiful colors and a possibility to customize it many different ways. I personally like the auto-brightness sensor, and haven't had any problems with it so far.

The impressive sound signature is another feature worth pointing out. While it is not very loud it simply sounds premium, as if listening to a nice set of speakers, rather than a laptop. The sound is clean, well-balanced with a spacious stereo.

The keyboard is very good but, as mentioned in previous reviews, it is poorly, unevenly lit, which to some extent spoils the impression of otherwise great attention to detail.

The laptop has only two USB C ports. I'd rather not have to use a dongle but I understand it is the price paid for the super slim design. The laptop is actually smaller than my 11 inch Acer from a couple of years ago.

The trackpad is ok, just ok. It is responsive but I don't like the way it acts when pressed. It is too hard and there is a little gap between the upper glass layer and what's underneath. This would probably be the only element of the hardware I would like to see improved.

The screen ratio, taller but narrower, takes some getting used to but it is very practical for office work. The free subscription to Office 365 is a nice addition for those who need it for work.

Battery life is not great. 5 hours on average is not much but the device charges very quickly.

I also have a Huawei phone and was hoping to be able to benefit from that. Unfortunately, the Huawei ID, which enables file sharing between Huawei devices is not available in the U.S. version of the Matebook

Windows 10 is still far from a perfect OS and I've had a lot problems with the installation of updates. I am also using Linux, as a dual boot, which works fine, but obviously without the unique sound signature I mentioned earlier.

Overall, I can definitely recommended the laptop, but I would love to see Huawei developing their own style, which they have done with their phones, rather than pursuing the approach of copying a Mac and then trying to improve it.

I don't know where to start. I am currently attending the University of California Santa Cruz. I bought this laptop the week after Black Friday and even though I've had it for a short time, it has proven to be a decent laptop and decent competitor for the MacBook. Before I bought this laptop I had a mediocre computer whose build quality doesnt come close to the MateBook X. My old laptop was trash, it didnt even have a backlit keyboard, heavy (over 5 lbs), and a bendable plastic build. The MateBook doesnt have any of the issues of my old laptop and its 5x better. Let me tell you the screen on this thing is AMAZING. Every color looks so sharp and crisp on this 2k display and not to mention the small bezels that the screen has. Looking at this laptop some would assume that the speaker quality is sacrificed since everything is packed into such a small form factor but let me tell you that it gets pretty loud. You wont have any problems consuming media or listening to your favorite song. Did I mention that it weighs less than 2.5 pounds?? It feels extremely light especially coming from an old laptop that weighed over 5 pounds. One thing that is worth noting is the battery life. It is not amazing at all. Kinda far from it. I was disappointing to see that it just dies faster than my old laptop. You will probably see 5-6 hours from this on single charge. That was the only draw back on such a beautiful laptop but I do want to say that it charges pretty fast though. Overall Huawei did a well job building a practical laptop. I am so happy that I bought this.
*****PROS****** *********CONS*********
Screen is amazing Small battery
Great speakers Just 2 usb type-c ports
Super light weight screen is a bit wobbly than I like it to be
Fast start up speeds
Fingerprint scanner login
Solid Build
A Dongle is included in the packaging to expand the number of ports

****UPDATE*****from 5 stars to 4 stars
So I've own the laptop for a while now and overall it is still great. However I am beginning to discover some issues. Most recently the screen hinge is starting to slightly from side to side to form a really small gap. In addition the mousepad when from being decent to being problematic. It doesnt click just once when I press down on the mousepad but now it physically moves down two "levels" to make it seem like its 2 clicks. This is not a good especially after 2 months of ownership. Still a solid pick in my opinion
